Hi ALL,
I was told that its not possible to drift with standard car set up,and that you have to buy a upgraded diff to do sideways?
Anybody can commment on that please, and if anybody knows where to get taht diff and how expensive are they?fd rx7 i m on about.
cheers
nah thats not true, you can drift these cars in standard form, although some wheel/tyre/suspension/engine upgrades are advantageous.
P.S Dont practice on the roads....go to a BIG stretch of open tarmac ;)
I\'m pretty sure the cars have an LSD as standard? Anyhow, they drift well as normal. You\'d deffo need vastly uprated cooling mods though. Plus as said in the other post, learning to drift in an Rx7 is an invitation to bankruptcy (sp?!) IMO. I don\'t think anyone on the driftworks club recommends (or uses?) an Rx7 to learn in? Gary at Rotaryarts ran a drift rx7 without any problems so maybe its worth having a chat with him. Hes always very helpful and would be able to supply you with the mods that you need to get drifting.
Cooling, cooling, cooling... tyres. Everything else is straight forward. When you have got a bit more useful drifting you could then benifit from a 1.5way diff or something similar depending on your needs. Don\'t worry about it to start with. Just get the cooling sorted and then move on to the handling of the car.
A good set up would be: Electric Water Pump, Alloy Rad + AST and fan controller. It\'s no good ripping out all the Mazda cooling system (plastic ducting) and stuffing an aftermarket air filter on thinking that this will get more cold air in to the engine bay, because it won\'t. Leave as much of it as you possibly can exactly where it is.
If you end up fitting a turbo timer, which would be ideal with your new Electric Water Pump, be sure to buy one with a vehicle speed sensor and actually FIT IT! so that it will only work if you are at a stand still. The last thing you need is to cut the ignition and find that the turbo timer wants to keep the engine running e.g Throttle stuck open entering a drift = good night!!
A good EWP is a Mezier pump. Leave the thermostat housing alone and make a plate that comes off the water pump housing. This way you maintain all the warm up and cool down features that Mazda designed. A good Alloy Rad is a PWR or Koyo one. The workmanship is about the same, but the PWR one are normally a little bigger. Alloy AST\'s are much of a muchness. Just make sure you get one that is actually designed for an FD.
If your Rx hasn\'t got twin oil coolers, you need to get the crossover pipes and the other cooler as this will be a great help.
If you fit an aftermarket front bumper, pay attention to the air flow in to the oil coolers and the radiator, they won\'t work very well if they are just dangling there, they need an airtight channel in and out. Don\'t stick your number plate in the hole!
There you go. Drift car. Just needs fine tuning of suspensions. There is absolutely no need to increase the power output of the engine.
