Title: how much boost
Post by: prisspringle on January 11, 2007, 11:17:49 AM
i tryed searching with no luck, roughly how much boost on std ports will you need to get to 250-300 bhp? just woundering if i can find a cheapish supercharger for something a bit different, might keep my mind busy while i\'m off after haveing my tonsils(sp?) out lol.

It depends solely on the size of the charger, whether it be pulley or gas driven.

pulley i\'m looking for a rough psi so i can see what sc i can use, i wouldn\'t mind using a mini one but i\'m not sure that it will make enough psi

Its not the pressure you should look for, it is the volume of air produced by the charger.

well the mini sc(m45) starts to warm more than push more air at 15 psi  .75lL/ rev looking on the mini forums thats about 215whp they seem to think the m62 will push more psi and runs at 1.05L / rev and will make 300whp for them  so the m62 might be a good bet dont feel like pushing a  m45 and risk deting the engine seems safer to go with a m62

the mini one is fine ( i think )

my mate ran it on his 1275 polo and was running about 240 bhp :D

I presume you still need to use a charge cooler of some kind, as you\'re still squashing air and making it warm !

for rather low boost you can run with out( like some vw kits) but its best to espesally with the heat off are engines

FYI
A 13BT engine on stock ports using the stock turbo makes around 200bhp atw at around 13psi - I dont have the flow figures but I\'d imagine they are going to be bigger than the mini charger can cope with.
IIRC Jackson racing do sell a super charger kit for the 13B N/A... wasnt the greatest looking kit though.

thats what i have found looking on the mini web sites like i said they top out at around 210-215 depending on mods.

the m62 looks like a better bet somewhere nearer 300 atw seems alot easyer and with a more efficent ( and cooler) flow.

and i can always start with the mini charger and move up so i am not going from n/a power to alot more power. i can see if the set up is correct without spending too much.
