Title: Easy? Just how easy?
Post by: merlyn on January 09, 2007, 12:05:09 AM
OK. So there has been a bit of talk about the easy conversion from auto to manual.
As a proud and loud owner of an auto but with plans to play, just how easy is it and how much has it cost you?:2eek
I will be doing the job myself with help from MikeyH who owns a garage so it\'s more the parts than anything.
Plan B is to keep the auto box and play anyway but how much power will the old girl handle - any auto-modders out there with silly outputs?:god

Big problem with autos is getting an ECU to work! you also will need a manual loom.

sounds good IF i go ahead but need to look into things veerrryyy carefully so I don\'t get stung. Might be easier to just buy a modded manual although i would have to get that passed by the warden (oops, i mean the wife!).

The auto box is not very strong, about 2000 miles after it had anApexi ECU installed and tuned my autobox packed out :)

I didnt swap to manual but I had a stronger autobox installed.

Where did you go for the stronger auto-box and how much are we looking at?

Merlyn the auto diff is a different ratio diff good for top end speed not for low end speed. If having changed to a manual box you then go heavy modding like some of us, the auto box would come in useful as you need one to go for the 200mph club later on. HTH:wave

I bought my box already rebuilt of a guy from the FDUK forum - sicknote, he was running pretty high power - I *think* shy autos did the rebuild, im not 100% sure.

Auto boxes can be modified to give much better performance..... would be well worth a little research.

This months jap performance with the orange fd (I think its tysons??) said that it used to be an auto and is now a manual.  It said that re-worx did the work - so they may be able to help a bit.

I think it was a full engine and transmission transplant so it might be different.

Yea, re-worx have done successful auto to manual conversions they suggested the same to me.
