Hi guys, I\'ve signed up recently and I am kinda tempted to get my hands on an rx7, I\'ve always been a keen japanese performance car enthusiast. previously owning an mr2 gt turbo, and recently a vvti supra. I do have a basic understand of rx7\'s however I think i\'ve been given some duff info from someone regarding engine rebuilds for rx7\'s built after 1998. I am told that these cars do not require engine rebuilds?! As far as im concerned all rotory engine\'s require a rebuild to replace the tips due to the nature of engine!! tips are subject to wear, fact! Anyone care to convince me otherwise? has this person been bull****ting me? :D
Cheers

Yep.
All rotary enginges have a limited lifespan.
But they offer more bang for buck than anything else out there.
Buy a good rebuilt single turbo FD , you wont look back.
Just buy one. My opinion was that mazda would not realise and engine that cannot be driven through fear of breaking it. Alot of problems people have are to do with buying a poor example or miss treating the car.
The same can be said for any car really, when it comes to mistreating them!
More bang for the buck? please explain, I\'ve heard of high maintenance cost and it drinks like a fish, like all the other car\'s i\'ve owned in the past :D
I was tempted to take my supra to its single phase, having owned the car for 3 years and i got bored. It would\'ve cost me over 7 grand to have a single conversion and tuned correctly without cutting corners, so i decided to sell up instead, as i couldnt justify the cost with existing mounting debts.
I\'ve noticed there are a handful of members on here selling single turbo FD\'s! certainly an option, but im a fussy bugger when it comes to mods, and paint colour :D
Maintenence cost is very reasonable if you can turn a spanner.
Fuel is a bit of a headache I must admit, but if looked after you can expect 40K out of an engine pushing 400bhp.
Single turbo is he way my friend, look up Jays car....

Email me at powerstakgg@yahoo.co.uk for more info if interested.
yer jays car is a lovely example and very tastfully modded to
Hi mate, If you are after one locally, I will be selling up soon. Mail me al3x123@hotmail.com and I will send you spec and pics..
This might not make much sense i don\'t own an RX7 Just in the market for one like the thread starter , but regarding fuel concerns i\'ve heard people running premix of 2 stroke oil and petrol so if your running a full tank and getting 20 mpg on a good day you only actually filled it up with half petrol right? so if you fill up again and premix half 2 stroke half petrol wouldnt that mean your technically getting 40 mpg ? sorry if its confusing might just be a weird loop hole in my mind trying to convince me that the fuel consumption is good :)
Premix does not mean 50 per cent oil! fill the tank up with petrol preferably 99ron or V power then add half a litre of premix oil (mineral) to the tank, thats what i do, i don\'t think the engine would run with half a tank full of oil! but around 100 to one ratio seems to be recomended,
Bob
Single turbo?!?! Nah, get a twin, much more fun for real world road driving :P (opening up a can of worms here ;) )

Ro284 Thanks wasn\'t sure what the ratio was i just assuped it was 50/50 Thanks hopefully need to brush up on some knowledge for RX7\'s good job i got about 8 months to wait for one!
Ive never put oil in my tank... is this recommended? I always just fill her up with Vpower!
If you HAVE REMOVED the oil metering system which injects oil into combustion chamber for you (controlled by ecu) then you use PREMIX in its place.
If its a stock FD with oil metering system then you do not add oil to the fuel. This is done mainly on high power/high revving engines where the standard metering system cannot cope.
It can be done to stock engines if you wish but need to diasable/remove metering system first which would involve a change of ecu to something aftermarket like Apexi PFC.If you remove system with stock ecu the engine will not run correctly, ecu will be in default mode.
I have never heard of people adding oil to fuel on cars with the metering system being used still but i suppose it can be done.........car would smoke though i would of thought????????
I have a pfc... no idea about the oil thingy tho!
KiHKs arse - sorry if i\'ve opened a can of worms the oil remark was just something i read on rx7club forums it\'s an american RX7 site , but i never thought about the car smoking but i guess you would be right , I think they mentioned something to do with when you start the car there would be no oil in the rotor housings or something along the lines.
No can of worms matey, i think there are several owners that use premix at either 100 to 1 or 150 to 1, i think its a good idea myself, and makes a lot of sense, it gives constant lubrication to apex seals etc. irrispective of temperature, or cold thick oil, and that can only be a good thing, i use Skill high revving chain saw oil for my premix. mine does not smoke at all, There is obviously nothing wrong with my metering pump, or the ecu would go into limp mode, but my car uses so little oil, i prefer the reassurance of knowing my housings etc, are getting the tinyest amount of permanent fresh oil protection all the time it\'s running, the car just sailed through MOT with excellent emmisions.

Like i said i have never heard of it until now which proves my theory that it can be done.
Thanks mate.
I run premix and the stock OMP, only 150:1 mind, but it adds a little safety to the system as I\'m pushing 380 odd BHP.
Soon taking the stock OMP out completely and running pure premix as it\'s a massively superior solution and should extend engine life.
The stock OMP is sh1te imho.
I was thinking about doing this. Heard that if you do that you can then start using fully synthectic oil with peace of mind. That in its self must be a good thing.

I\'m not sure about synthetic oils as I remember some mention of it degreding various seals.....best ask your tuner (pip) for his opinion on the matter.
I just want to remove the OMP because I believe it to be a poor solution to the lubrication of the seals. If it\'s premixed, the nanosecond you hit the throttle your seals have the lubrication and protection there in abundance.
The stock system is massively slow to react i comparisson....... BIN IT :D
so how much oil to a full tank of fuel and also what type of oil. I am currently running the stock omp but want to be safe.
I use 330ml of oil per tank, use any fully synthetic 2 stroke oil as it does not affect octane.
