A thought occured to me as I took the rx out for a spin & I noticed the outragouse amount of play in the steering (almost a quarter turn of the wheel before the wheels move).
Have I been turning the adjustment screw the wrong way???
I assumed that you loosen the locknut then turn the screw clockwise to lower the peg & tighten up the box.
Its just that the steering seems to be getting worse, more & more play & its SCARY to drive on the road! Forget the heavyness, thats a given, its the baggy out of contol loose, wobbly steering wheel thats the problem.
Surely you dont turn the adjustment screw anti clockwise to tighten the box do you?
It also has a big locknut, the type you need a c spanner for,or a hammer and a punch. You need to achieve the least play by adjusting both.Front should be jacked up so you can turn the steering from lock to lock,to make sure there are no tight spots.I have seen many steering boxes fall apart because the adjusting was wrong.
Bring it down, and I\'ll put a mk2 steering box in it,they only have the screw and locknut, and adjust far easier.
Thanks Tim. I will have another go once it stops raining. No way I could drive it down to you as is.
I need the brakes sorting too while I\'m there. I have some pads for the front I think.
We should dyno it too while I\'m there, what do you think? (maybe fit a Kenlow fan too?)
Spending at the RX motors altar again eh?
You don\'t want to be having an off with all that power mate :o !
Well he probably hasn\'t finnished spending the last lump I gave him, but I wouldn\'t want Tim to run out of beer tokens.
(maybe I can convince him to fit a rack instead of a pooy old steering box.....;)
Also considering that N02 kit.....
I do have a steering rack in my 1st gen,but only because the steering box was where the turbo wanted to be.It is from a nissan micra. You would not want one,as it does not give full lock to lock,I don\'t mind as I did it for drag racing.
^ Tim you can buy off the shelf manifolds to move the turbo forward to clear the steering box!!
Ha! Another case of those in power saying \'Do as I say not as I do\'
Perhaps I dont intend to reverse park? 86 point turn - no problem, I have the time.

that would be to easy though! Let\'s face it, Tim never takes the easy option where his drag car is concerned! ;)
What about power steering of an FC?
I hear Coarser electric power steering goes on too, probably has same lock problems tho.
I think you will find that the corsa power steering is only the pump that you use and not the rack.
I have almost finished making my 12a turbo exhaust manifold and have made it so that the turbo is where I want it, i.e. away from the brake booster and most other things that will be hampered by heat. The standard 12a turbo manifold wouldnt have fitted in my engine bay as the engine is too far back. Pictures on the moggies page later.
cheers, michael.

WHERE FROM???
Australia mostly. If you contact most of the larger garages like maztec, pac performance etc I think that most of them sell thir own. Some even do a nice cast job!

Yes,I could also have had one made, but I had an HKS T51R kit for an FD.The manifold is very short, and the turbo is mounted in the centre, which is the way I wanted it,so the steering box had to go.
When can you do this steering box thing then Tim? (under protest of course)
Can it be done on a weekend?
Bugger. I need loads doing to this money pit!
Brakes, steering, fan, dent pulled out, new tyres for my 15" deepdish wheels......oh heavens - I should of just had kids. I\'m sure its cheaper
I had the problem with the play in the steering wheel and also when driving the 7 would wander all over the road no matter what adjustment i made to the steering box, but the problem was the bushing\'s in the idler arm were shot replaced them now as tight as a gnats chuff...
what\'s an idler arm?? Is it in the Haynes book?
Its the arm on the opposite side of the steering assembly. The bushes are squeezed together to take out the play. Replacement ones are only about 10quid !

Cheers, I\'ll take a look once the snow clears.
Keep us posted on the LPG conversion too. Most interesting. How do you mix the oil tho? Where will the tank go & how will you feel about driving a bomb around?
You could say the same thing with the petrol tank !!!! Im going to be mixing the oil in via a couple of jets in a adapter plate of 1/2in alu plate. Making it good for future turbo setup too :)
