Has anyone got a detailed guide to chainge the clutch on an fd???
The unbolting of all the bits I can handle...... it\'s just the releasing and refitting of the gearbox, I know you go through the inspection plate to lever/do something but thats it!!! and I presume you can chainge the clutch like any other rear drive car (withough removing the flywheel)
Cheers

you dont need to remove the flywheel,
undo the 6 bolts that hold the clutch cover on to the flywheel through the inspection cover, remove gearbox, clutch remains on the spline, once the gearbox is out you can pop the split ring off that hold it onto the spline,
bolt new clutch to flywheel using alignment tool, (making sure its got the new split ring in place) offer gearbox back up and bolt to the engine, using a small crow bar or big screwdriver you lever the clutch fork into the clutch cover, this clips the thrust bearing into the cover and it should stay there, try levering it back to sure its clipped in.
Couple of things to check, make sure you are not leaking oil from the rear main seal behind the flywheel, check the pilot bearing in the end of the eccentric shaft, both of these are worth replacing while the gearbox is out if there is any sign of wear/leak
Job done
Got a new piolet bairing with the exedy clutch kit I bought for it!!!
and a big chunky thing too bairing of some discription??!!!
Jono
do you mean the counter weight?
i think he means the release bearing. good luck getting the pilot bearing out!
I assume the clutch is a stock replacement type, not one of those with its own lightweight flywheel included
hardest part of the wheole thing if you are doing it on your drive it dropping the gearbox! and then refitting it!
Tony when you say split ring....are you referring to the snap ring that holds the release bearing to the cover plate?
I would sugest you do take it off the Flywheel and drop the assembly with the Box, I had some issues getting the release bearing back into the Clutch assembly after i built the Clutch up on the engine and then fitted the gear box (it can be done but i like to play with the Bearing now on the floor to make sure its 100% correct before the job gets too far on).

I second that, a pull type clutch is fitted this way

Here\'s a helpfull vid. enoy!
luckily i have never had any issue with clipping the snap ring (thanks one2watch) and with a new clutch its \'usually\' easy but i know of people who have had trouble getting it clipped in, also this is the way i have seen several \'engine builders\' do it.
Its not that easy to bolt the clutch to the flywheel through the inspection hole but can be done with patience and determination.
Cheers flats, I never understood how a pull clutch worked until I saw that vid!!!! Think I\'ll give the chainge a go in 2 weeks once I\'ve sorted the garage out!!! going to be working in a midget pit to do the job! I\'m only 5\'7" but when I\'m in the pit the lower splitter on the front comes to the bottom of my rib cage!!!

LOL, Who\'s going to have a bad back then ;)
i always thought that the only way to reattacjh the clutch to flywheel was by bolting up the 6 bolts to the pressure plate...
so does this mean that when removing the engine, you can do it by pushing the release bearing thru the clutch cover?
Yep, Its easyer to pull the Bearing out of the Clutch assembly when you remove the engine.
It maybe just me but i find the engine easyer to put back if the Clutch is in the Gear box (you don\'t have to aline it, you just have to put the 6 bolts back in)
the whole point of the snap ring is it allows the bearing to pop in but not come out again, if you are replacing it then you could force it out i spose.
The problem i had was with the Clutch arm in place it was quite heaverly sprung back so i could only lever one side of the Snap ring holder. Basicly the more force i tried to push it in the more it went out of shape until it just kept poping out when i pushed the clutch.
So now i like to know its in (so the box does\'nt need to come off again when i bend the Snap ring holder ;))
Didn\'t realise but there was an istruction booklet in with the clutch kit!!!
It tells you to unbolt the box, wlide it back 30 - 40mm then go through the resulting gap to releas the bairing as shown in the vid...... then putting it back together you fit that part back to the gearbox & clutch arm, offer the box up & push the unit back into the clutch using the clutch arm!!!
Looks so simple, but I bet it aint!!!!
