Title: Gearbox wine (dont know how to spell)
Post by: D1 WTF on January 07, 2007, 12:20:06 PM
lol, as above.  i am not having much luck with my rex.  got it back after the second rebuild and am mucho happy pulls like a train, a turbo train.

although it now has a wyne, wine, however it is spelt.  it is noticable in 1-2-3 not 4th as is direct and dont notice it in 5th as if in 5th i am on the motorway etc so cant hear over the road noice.  it does stop when clutch in pressed down.  a bearing?

there is also a noice that sounds like it is coming from a bit further back as i slow down, still in gear (not clutch in) just slowing to a hault.  sounds almost like a rubbing noice, but i am sure it is mechanical,

Mine does it too. Had all oils replaced but its still the same. My last rex made no wine at all (that was type x though which I think has more sound deadening). It is a daily driver and so far it does not seem to be getting any worse so I am not worrying.

Gear whine is a symptom of poor gear alignment..generally brought on by bearing wear allowing shafts and gears to move around under load. Only fix is a rebuild, and the longer it goes on the more damage is done to the gear teeth.

As above I would have thought the diff was the culprit.

I ended up getting a new box when my 5th syncro went, and sold my old box. Maybe worth your while instead of rebuilding it.

hmmm, my 5th sincro is a bit cr4p, but pip siad had he known when i got it rebuild and new clutch etc it would have cost about £20 to fix.  i dont know.....will have to taake it up to them and get it investigated i think.  when i have a spare day and £150 for petrol to get there.

It\'s another message board I\'m on that\'s to blame, one typo and you get mobbed, let alone a missed apostrophe or the wrong spelling!!! LOL!
