An unfortunate rebuild episode..
So I gently drive my FD back home 200 miles or so after a rebuild and notice the gearbox is a bit noisier than it used to be.
Get it up on the ramps and undo the g/box drain and out comes about 100ml of stinky black sludge!! There isn\'t much swarf on the drain bungs.
Mazda mechanic recommends I drain it again after another 200 and study the bits that come out.
Has any one else driven a dry box this far? And what was the outcome?
oooo thats not good!! who did the rebuild for you & wouldn\'t that be checked befor the car leavs the garage???
Jono
I dont want to mention any names here, the garage is quite reputable among MRC and has offered to make amends.
Would just like to know if it\'s been shagged and I should demand another gearbox.

Looking at it sensibly..... who ever did the rebuild wern\'t asked to do anything to the box, so the thing you should be asking is how long it has been run without oil????
If it\'s shagged, there are a few people breaking FD\'s at the moment so you could get a second hand box from one of them??!!
Jono
It can\'t be the garages fault, cos you don\'t normally take the box out to do an engine rebuild.
Unless they did other work for you?

That is not a true statement. I know of three companies that remove the engine and gearbox as one unit, including the frame, for basic engine rebuilds.

Have a good look at the seals etc if there not leaking its got have gone some where? No oily patches on your Drive or anything like that?
Heh, should have guessed these replies were coming!
The box and engine were out before sending it and the car for a rebuild, the oil clearly visible through the changer hole which is why I put some speed tape over it and wrote on it "full of oil". Which probably jinxed it.
I guess the only way to find the answer to the question is to keep on driving (with oil in of course).
I\'ll keep you posted.
