Hi i broke down today and it wasnt cooll!!!
I had to go buy a couple of birthday cards for me nephews and went to Asda in the RX7 it wasnt that busy in the store but the carpark was rammed.
I didnt realise that Doncaster Rovers had just finished getting thier pants pulled down 4-0 by Bolton and then all of a sudden 15K people who had parked up at asda decided to leave the same time as me and im not kidding there was a very large queue of traffic leaving the carpark single file. there was thousands of people and probably just as many cars!
So im trying to negociate this traffic jam and its not moving really, after ten minutes of going nowhere theres a bit of movement. I shifted gear into first and went to lift the clutch up and realised something wasnt right! the clutch pedal was still on the floor. i tried to lift it with my foot but the car still wont move. :2Confused
no one can leave the carpark cos im blocking the only way out...
i didnt know what to do except move the car by pushing it except i couldnt really do that as there wasnt anywhere on the side to park it. i managed to push the car out by myself a bit further down the road no one offered to give me a hand either. i found a nice double yellow line on a wider bit of road and managed to get it out of the way enough for people to get past.
As people were driving past they were staring at me. some poeple going past even gave me the finger and some 14 year old girl gave me the international sign for "your a nob head" :3Confused some nobs in a corsa drove past and told me to ring the AA. very helpful except i dont think they can tow me as i have no front towing eye!
I didnt know what to do so i phoned Grinder.. he told me wat it could be, but i couldnt really fix it with no tools! so i waited n waited until the traffic subsided -- an hour and a half!!!!!! :Hammer :Snoring man i was sooo bored and all the meanwhile people starin at me as they goin past and some more people swearing or pointing and laughing at me.
the whole of doncaster must know about my break down i dont think i can show my face again..
anyway managed to get the car home by rev matching you how they used to before they invented syncromeshes. lol
wat you think then lads - clutch master cylinder to slave hose split?
Slave cylinder most likely, happened to me before. Received the same treatment as you, what wrong with people these days?
Its funny the reaction you get from people when youve broken down in a RX7. I got the same, everyone seems to wanna tell you your a knob!
I suppose its just jealousy, probably Ferrari drivers get the same. I remember I was at my gf house once and popped the bonnet of my yellow rex in the street to inspect a problem. A group of neds walked passed and once they had got about 30ft away one turned and shouted...
" Hoy! Bannanaman.... yer motors a ****er!!"
I suppose its no 1litre Corsa mind you....:driving
Happened to me once, clutch was stuck to the floor, but luckily i managed to pull it back up with my foot and drive it home, cylinder needed replacing
Check if the piping is okay first, could just be a leak, however it could and most probs be the master cylinder...
Not only is breaking down an embarressment but a frustration to the reaction of the yob culture. If it was a rugby crowd you would have been helped on the spot !!!!!!!!!! Feel for bud...:cheers
Know how you feel on this one mate, I was in my mates R32 Skyline when it broke down, the amount of abusive comments from chavs, girls, blokes, grown men and women etc was staggering.
Couldnt believe people could be so petty minded !!!
almost exactly the same thing happened to me. on a dual carriageway in two lanes of traffic when my clutch line burst. let off the clutch to creep forward aand suddenly stalled.........very bazar. pulled it out of gear, restarted it then. went to put it into gear, and ooowwwww, wheres the clutch pedal gone. flat to the floor.
it was the clutch line, get a braided one as you are replacing it.
same thing happened to me at a zebra crossing, clutch went to the floor pulled it back up and went straight down. There is an adjustable rod attached to the clutch pedal which pushes the pump through the bulk head this had snapped in half so no clutch. If it is this dont go to the scrappers in sheffield city salvage think its called because its missing
Funny, exact same thing with clutch happenned to me. I managed to bring it up with my feet - try that. Happenned once or twice since then but otherwise fine.
I got similar reaction once - it must be jealousy. I cant believe people would be like that either.
if the line is ok, its probably the master cylinder, the slaves dont often go.
Is it the turbo II or an FD?
I have a low mileage turbo II master cylinder if you need. A braided hose is a good idea if you have an uprated clutch, on either car.
LOL glad im not on me own then!
i tried to lift it up with my foot but nothing happened. i started the car up in first gear and gave it a little bit of revs and then let go of the key and the car started off moving down the road. I was only a couple of mile from home and luckily i didnt have to stop.
I just been out to have a look and theres fluid around the bell housing but that clutch hose seems to be dry.. the brake and clutch fluid reservoir is at minimum so i think the seals on the slave have gone.
Did a search and ive decided to order a new slave and a new braided hose theres no way i wanna get stuck as i go country lane blasting sometimes and no clutch in the middle of nowhere isnt tennis!
my brake fluid was due a change anyway :)

this happened to my FD,
and now you mention it I actually need one for my FC cabriolet PM me about it chief ill have that off you! :guinness
This happened to me in my FD, but i managed to lift the pedal ,it popped back up and has worked fine since.
Try replacing the cylinder, also check your brake fluid level isnt ridiculously low or something.
Before you order anything, give Pip a bell as they have rebuild kits on the shelf for both FD and FC. A simple replacement of seals and valves, and not expensive. :)
John
Happend to me also, was the hose, as said before replace it with a braded hose.
ok i put more fluid in today and pumped the pedal i looked underneath and theres brake fluid coming out of the gearbox inspection plate.
the pipes are all 100% dry.
does this mean i need a new slave cynlinder? i havent took it off as its a bit awkward under there!
exactly the same thing happened to me on the M25 in my old GTi-R, In the outside lane in traffic jam standing still, traffic went to move away in front and I\'m stuck with the clutch pedal on the floor. Police stopped the traffic and helped. I could start the car in 1st and change gear without clutch if careful. Traffic jams were a NO NO without a clutch so I cruised past all the traffic slowly on the hard shoulder, sweet!
As someone said you can change the seals rather buy a whole new cylinder so it shouldn\'t be too much damage to the wallet. Sounds like the slave.
It\'s the slave seals.
You\'ll need to get underneath, take off the gearbox shield and undo the two bolts holding the slave on.
Dont lose the pushrod in the housing like I did once, cos you\'ll need a torch, a little mirror and a magnet on a stick. Or a trained hamster.
Apart fom checking the lines and cylinder seals it could also be the folk that operates the clutch, they have been known to snap.
We have the folks and slave cly, 2 diff slave kits, master cyl and 4 master lits.
All listed here

I\'d be pretty annoyed if some folk came and operated my clutch. Can\'t stand their music let alone let them have some part of the driving.
Looks like you could replace the slave for £60 or just the seals for £18.
so wat do you reckon?
i rang my mate up (hes a cheif mech at Jag) and he reckons that the usual rebuild kits are pretty dire and dont last long and recommends a whole new slave cylinder....
its a bit pricy tho!?
anyone had good results and longevity with the replacement seal kit?
Speak with Pip....the kits he provides are Mazda kits, and top quality.
John
If you\'ve not got underneath yet then get a trolley jack and some axle stands (you\'ve got to get under there eventually).
Look now before buying another slave It might be the hose and the fluid could be running down and across to where you can see it.
If hydraulic fluid is definetly coming out the inspection hatch then you\'ll need to get a new slave or seals.
If this fix is too expensive for you then you aren\'t ready for typical FD maintenance.
Hope all the pedal pumping and adding fluid hasn\'t contaminated your clutch plates!
Martin
lol @ at the comment about not being ready for typical FD maintenance from a n00b. This is the only problem ive had in 11 months of ownership, my car is a very well maintained beast, dont worry!
i was simply passing comment on how pricey a slave for an fd is compared to other cars.
anyhow thanks for the help lads. ill order a new slave kit on Monday.
nas if the inside of the slave cylinder is pitted it will just destroy another set of seals, if its just the seals that have gone you should be ok with just a seal kit.hth
matt
happend to me and it was a hydrolic flexible cluth line that runs down past the oil filter, easy to change and just £22 from mazda dealer

Pfft. Was driving rx7\'s when you were 8
Similar happened to me last saturday, on the way to my mates.
Clutch got lower and lower each time I changed gear, till it was flat to the floor. I was lucky that I got parked up at my mates when it finally went.
Strange thing is I just went to tell my mate that I thought the clutch has gone, then we both came out and didn\'t find any leaking. Tried pumping the peddle a bit and noticed the clutch started to raise back up.
Decided to take a risk and drive it back home and it seems ok now. Not sure what to do about it since it\'s back to normal...
Glad it didn\'t fail in traffic though!
Sparkgap---lmbo at your sig mate nice one.
Ref this thread just remember boys these FD\'s are 10+ years old so bits are going to wear out. You are driving a supercar killer and the buzzzzzzzzzzzz comes at a cost. BEER TOKENS. Live with it and enjoy.

There\'s a flexible hose from the back of the firewall that ges down to the back of the engine, right next to the map sensor. I had this split on me in an Ikea car park (what is it with car parks!). Simple and cheap to replace but the clutch system will need bleeding of course.
Hopefully it\'s just that and not a cylinder problem.
ive got all the bleeding stuff, im still waiting on Gary to send me those bits.. pressure is on - i want to go to that jap meet off the A1 on sunday!
jap meet off the A1?
this one dude

i really really wanna go!
car is now fixed! was the slave cylinder.
btw one word of advice if you ever change yours RESIST temptation to push the rod in cos fluid will shoot out of it and nearly get you in the eye!
I had the same thing with mine bud, however the cause was slightly different... Some silly bugger (before my time) couldn\'t be bothered to put the top bolt on the slave cylinder so it was only held on by one bolt, said bolt sheared in half, pushrod came out along with a whole load of fluid. Thankfully it was a cheap repair though - bottle of brake fluid and two new bolts!
