As above
I have found some mirror chrome paint which i want to paint my car with and add a tinted lacquer probably blue. But i have been told that it may be ilegal due to the fact of glare. Is this true?
Cheers Garith.
hmmm , good question , i looked into it a few years back an found that it was , also ive been pulled by the 5-0 many a years ago for a stainless cover on my spare wheel on a vitara , the whole thing was polished , mite pay you to check with an mot station or even ring the minestry of rip offs / transport lol
Apparently it is illegal. We tried on a car last year and the finish was pretty poor tbh.Doubt its water based so its illegal for any shop to spray it because of new legilation.
?
Its very legal to spary it as long as you don\'t use over a set amount a year (just like any paint as long as it don\'t contain Lead or Mercury).
As for using it on a road car, I\'m told 60% reflective is the legal limit but its very hard to Inforce becouse the Chrome paint applyed properly is between 70-80% reflective then if you use Dye over that it drops some more, if you just do areas you won\'t have a Problem its only if the Whole car is done.
I warn you Chrome paint is for Pro\'s, its very hard to use and you can\'t play with it like any other Base. I scraped at least three jobs before i got the hang of it, it Goes realy Cloudy if you don\'t do it right.
Thought id add to this, its very hard stuff to spray. I asked the body shop that is spraying mine about it and they told me they couldent do it. There mini won the Best in Britain 2006 Donny Show so they know what they are doing. Also they said although its a chrome effect, getting it to look %100 like chrome is almost impossible, and there is usually cloudy bits.
it may not be illegal but it would be a crime to paint a car in chrome paint
Years ago I saw an Austin Healy 3000 that was completly chromed. It was done the traditional way though and it looked mint.
Untill one side got run down a lime stone wall.
The idea is not to Chrome the car (Quite right that would look tacky) you use it to make a Candy REALY!! deep looks Anodised.
Yes it is very hard to use but people don\'t like to use it becouse its Expencive and easy to mess up (reworks etc)
There was an FTO painted in this paint doing the rounds last year, up close it didn\'t look that good considering how expensive the paint is.
What about Delorans? They were unpainted stainless steel!
I believe Chrome paint is indeed illegal unless on a totally show car ie never gets driven on the road, i think i have a few pics somewhere of chrome paintwork. hold on a sec ...................................... :god
The RX7 is not chrome but a very highly polished silver ? Someoen will correct me if wrong :2Confused
Also the Skyline is black believe it or not !!!!!!!
Hi all,
Thanks for all the rsponses about chrome paint. Sounds like a no go then, Even though the paint was not that expensive £75 litre getting it right would be very dificult and if someone managed to get it right it would be illegal. Back to the drawing board. Any ideas on original colours?
Cheers Garith.
It would look awsome but the legal side would mean that if you did pull it off it\'d be a trailer job only.
Gurj, those pics are awsome!! Any more links or info on the Supra? Since I\'m taking mine to bits for seam welding I can change the whole car colour if I like and a chrome/black would be mental! Although I\'ll proably settle for black again the thought of something dofferent (maybe even a deep purple) would help show off the body work a bit more.
if it were illegal how do the tankers with the high polish stainless tanks get away with it ?

The tanker is chrome but the actual cab is not, i think that makes it ok Mike ?
Unsure but deffo remembering reading somewhere that chrome paint is ok for show cars but as a road car is a deffo no no :2Confused

Hi Ben,
This Supra was at TOTB last year, and i\'m guessing it will be making appearences in 2007 so best bet would be either to ask on the Supra forum or catch up with peeps who own it at one of the jap meets ?
And stop copying my purple affair :Giggle
Also check this out for an outstanding colour, absolutely awesome, sorry its one of those Skybuses though :D
As i say its down to how reflective it is, the theory is you don\'t get Dazzled off a tanker in summer becouse of how the Sides reflect light (you never see flat sided Wagons with Stainless sides?)
As i say i know people that have been using Custom paints for ALONG time (not just recently jumped on the Band wagon of the Fast and Furious kids with money) Trust me it can be done, but this stuff is designed to be used in smaller areas (logo backgrounds etc)
What you have to understand is its put on like no other Base, if you are not using it alot or have little experiance with it it goes Cloudy (simple as that) and once it starts to go there is no getting it back without starting again, Hence the reason you see show cars that look dodgy. Go to the Motorbike side of the paint world (where the real skill is) and have a look at some of there jobs.
Don\'t forget i have been to quite a few "Custom" paint shops and there all early 20\'s and have this ego thing going on but when it comes down to it they realy don\'t do as good a job as you think, The Older guys who realy know there Stuff tend to stay away from the Custom side becouse of the GRP (no painter likes working with it as it does nasty things if you get it warm and there is more money in High std work) so you are left ither paying stupid money to get the intrest of the guys who are in the know or sticking with the "Custom" paint shops, If you don\'t belive this then go to a few max power shows and look at the cars then go to a Concourse Classic car show and tell me what the Diffrence is?
No its not legal. The style police will come and take you away. :)

I may be mistaken but that looks like heat Sensitive paint.
Yep it gets worse.
You can just tell thats cost some serious cash to build that car, i was after a set of those rims a while ago and they came out at 3k for the rims without tyres
I bet you would\'nt see alot of change from 10k to repaint that.

Honestly ............ no idea but the colour is seriously lush :Ladys-man
If its the same, when its cold it all looks like the Gold colour on the door, when you use it it changes colour depending on what temp etc so it can change colour dramaticly around the engine and Wheels.
Its big in the US here it just looks gold all the time :(
this stuff is realy wacky, you can put it on as Clear and it changes to a Completly diffrent colour with heat.
Ahh you mean like flip paint as you move it changes colour ? But this one changes on heat ???
I think thats what you meant, i\'m no expert on paint tbh, it just looks cool !!!
We had a Escort Cosworth in Derby which had a 5 paint flip to it, something like purple/pink/green/silver/gold - work that one out :3Confused looked ok but a car with a decent paint job without flip looks better to me personally :Thumbsup!
Yeh Multi flip Paint has been done.... ALOT!! :yes people want some thing Diffrent all the time so this stuff was brought in, yes it changes like Multi flip but if you put your Hand on it or pour warm water on it you get crazy shapes.
Not my idea of fun but the Multi flip colours you talk about are upto about 6 diffrent flips at the moment and are realy easy to use (they even Match) but you have to watch the Feminin factor of a car painted like that:D
This is a Multi Post, simalar sort of thing realy.
Amazing what can be done wit colour these days!
Gurj that Signal Auto car is a stunner! If I were to go down the purple route it\'d probably be a ew shades darker than that.
That sounds well funky, not my cup of tea by any means and probably would cost a packet too i\'m guessing ?
Ahhh well at least i know what you meant now with the heat stuff, originally i thought you meant extreme heat ruins the paint as in the summer when it gets really warm :Giggle

I saw this up for sale in the US a while ago, candy shade of purple:
Now that looks well.
Would have looked better with Proper Te37\'s on, back are too skinny.
A couple of spacers would soon fix that!
Candy is nice but I prefer the darker shades personally so its not too in your face.
would it be possible to reproduce this colour in real life?

this was a black car that I photochopped into my dream RX, and the colour was just a lucky outcome really, I was going for a flat kind of jade green, but it came out like chromey green and I really like it. Would it be possible to do something like this with really deep candy type paints? This question is prob directed at Grizzly as he seems to know his stuff!
This day and age most things are Possable, i know some one who wanted there car painting the same colour as a Drifter rapper (The Chocolate Bar), i did\'nt do that but from what i heard it was\'nt to bad to match.
TBH that colour does\'nt look to radical, getting the depth is all about the Base Colour you start with you may have to get a few Spray out cards done using diffrent base colours and possably diffrent Dyes (some are more transparant than others so take more building up others don\'t need to much to over do it you have to have a Balance)
Now that is why i started this thread. That is the effect i had in mind but in blue. Great picture dandan
Cheers Garith.
like this?

Hmmmm that looks well lush, although could have applied better alloys ? somehow dont quite suit the car :Giggle
nah, its just dodgy photochopping gurj, trust me thay are lovely, lovely wheels.
Work Termist S1C i think. :)
