Title: Heat light flicker...
Post by: Cally on January 04, 2007, 11:12:57 PM
During giving my car some today I came to a motorway sliproad and was going up it int 3rd, looked over my shoulder to check it was free for WOT sitting about 5k revs gave it some WOT and the heat light flickered 3 times very quick so I put it into 4th and backed off.
What exactly does this mean? I did a search and its a det warning? Does this mean I have to get someone to have a look at my map or anything? Could it / will it have done any harm?:3Confused

if the heat light flickers 3 times quickly...then thats a knock warning on the apexi power fc. It would be wise to get someone to check the knock readings and the afrs and egts to make sure the map is safe!

hmm, duno anyone that can do this up here. It was setup by RE:WORX so i presume its a good map?!

prob just a faulty knock sensor

how do I know if it is?

never presume a faulty knock sensor allways check it out..flickering on wot is not a good sign off boost is not a worry

Post by: Jit on January 06, 2007, 05:22:01 PM
get it hooked up to a wideband and a datalogit and you will soon find out....
a knock sensor is just a mic...it pics up noise....it can ofeten pick up transmission noise or any other noise from the engine area....
Only way to find out is to check the afrs and comp test the car.

not a warning light I would disregard

eek! does anyone know anyone in scotland that could check it out? the engine was rebuilt under 4k miles ago... so hoping its nothing.

What exaxtly does that wee light mean? rebuild time? I am a little confused about it all after doing a search. Car starts etc fine.

if running apexi pfc then it is a det warning light BUT they are tempramental if on boost it is very possible slight det do not persist off throttle they can pick up noise especialy on ported engines...dont forget det can occur if intake temp too high/fuel slightly lower ron etc.imho these cars if standard are fine but tune them and u need to be more carefull than a piston engine
if ur car is tuned then make sure u have the fuelling to match and then have water injection fitted but tune the care without wi active then after tune re activate wi that shd ensure no det..run a good fuel pump and if able fuel pressure reg...WGT must be a closer option and i would have it on the rollers and discuss with pip.its not really practical to use tuners at other end of country to u..I have never used wgt but they have a good rep/dont take a chance as if u det badly that is a nightmare

Really need to get the correct commander to keep an eye on the inlet temps. The engine is ported so could be that. Is this light flashing once serious enough for me to have to trailor the car halfway across the country? Surely if mapped by reworx then the fuelling etc should be fine for the mods on the car?

mine flashes when i first start down the road then ok only when cold

i kept getting high knock levels when on throttle and this was down to a dodgy coil pack so dont just think its a faulty knock sensor, i popped an engine with 4k on rebuild and its no fun :(

At Pips my car was showing lots of knock on the commander but he said it was not a true reading as his equipment showed almost no knock(at 1.1 and no WI:) ). Still would not like to take the chance but seeing this has happened ONCE then I would forget about it unless it happens again. Ignoring persistant warnings is when you get stupid.

Its only happened the once and I just drove home and havent used it since. I dont really want to be taking my car across the coutry on a tralior for nothing. How much would the likes of pip take to look at something like this?

Post by: Cally on January 09, 2007, 12:25:19 PM
So just to confirm, I should just run the car and if it happens again then look into it as happening just the once could be nothing?

No-one on here will advise you to drive the car again without it being looked at but you probably should have another go and see if it happens again.

Was the incident straight after sitting in traffic or running particularly hot? heatsoak on a stock car can produce particularly high intake temperatures when you then boot it (that\'s the only time I have had a det light come on on mine - scary but once you understand why you should be OK)

Or was the car using the correct fuel (super/optimax/ultimate)? if it wasn\'t fill up with the good stuff straight away and take care until the tank is finished and then stick to the good stuff. If it was tuned on optimax, stick to high octane fuels.

Finally, if happens again you need to get it on the rollers. You can drive it gently without risk so no need to trailer it over to them.

Scott ,

Call Chris, you have his number. the car was mapped with Optimax, the light doe act as knock sensor, with the Apexi , ask Chris, but like everyone says each car gives different opinion and just check it out.It could be a dodgy sensor but it always better to be safe.

Whos chris? lol. I always run on Vpower so that shouldnt be a problem.

Ah, it all makes sense now. Will probably phone them later on see what they say. What should i ask? "Is it ok to drive?" lol

The fact that it hasnt happened before suggests you should get it checked out by some one, on the off chance that some thing is not working as it should/was. It wont have been tuned aggressively by Max (RE:Worx) so you should have plenty of safety margin - but if some thing isnt working properly...

FWIW, a lot of FDs have inherently \'high\' knock, and consistently. Knock sensors are fickle creatures, my last FD used to knock its tits off at any time; on throttle, off throttle, some times on cruise it would be like a christmas tree for 20 seconds lol - but it did 30K miles in less than a couple of years before I wrecked the car, including a good few Ring trips, hundreds of dyno runs, a lot of messing about with NOS etc etc - the car always felt strong and pulled cleanly - and I was 110% happy that Max had tuned it ok. My first FD which was stock also gave \'high\' knock on the Commander without incident.

Like I said, its worth getting checked over as its not occurred before.

R.

Who up here (scotland) could check it out? reworx is very very far away!!

arghh this happened to me last night! was at 70 in 5th gear about 5 mins after I started it up and the heat light flashed on once. So I backed off. and drove home sad :(.

Checked the top end readings on the Apexi thing and the knock was 64! Do I need to get it checked out? oh im in scotland too and dont know anywhere up here either.

Ive heard of people going to The Garage in wishaw, but duno how much they know about em?!?

Post by: 666FLO on January 13, 2007, 03:22:30 PM
ok I spoke to some last night about it and they said it was probablay because I have just about no fuel ( its just on the empty bit) when I put my foot on throttle its sucked in fuel air and crap out of the tank. lol I\'m not that worried about it. need to get some fuel and see if it does it again! knowing my luck it will blow up or something. :Laugh

So  would people suggest I should be ok to take the car out a test again today to see if it happens again as I havent driven it since.

cheers

do not test to see if a car dets as one split second and pop goes a seal bite the bullet and arrange to visit pip and get the car checked for fuelling etc on his dyno

Post by: Cally on January 17, 2007, 10:35:39 AM
So for one flash of the heat light yous reckon I need to take my car half way across the country to check it out?
How much does pip take to check fuelling etc?

I think its £50 per hour.

I\'ve been quoted £300+ vat for a full remap though.

you asked for advice its been given whether u take it is ur choice but if ur engine goes pop dont come back on here crying.it might be faulty knock sensor it could be any no of things but these engines do not like det and pip is an expert and it will only need setting up once on the rollers

What I am saying is tho that the car has been mapped previously and this light has only flickered that one time, is it such a serious matter that in the opinion of the more knowledgable people on the forum that I should put my car on a trailer and take it over 250 miles to pips. Is it even ok to start it to drive it onto a trailer? Cause I drove it home about 7 miles after the light flashed.

You could always phone Pip and ask him for a bit of advice first!

Anyone had this issue before...?....The car was perfect upto that point, did not even get a flicker. I have the PFC but no commander as yet so I can\'t get any readings............any ideas guys an gals

Thanks
Neill

I\'m running in my FD, I had the three flashes while cruising and the Apexi recorded 60 peak knock.
Normally it maxes out at 47 off boost at low RPM.
Hoping it was a one off, bubble in the fuel perhaps?
I had been testing the pump out of the car earlier.

Cally,

my heat light flickered in my old rx7. Drove it to Pip\'s to get it checked out, it was down to the map and that the injectors were being maxed out. The suggest made by Pip was to modify the plenium and add two extra injectors....never got round to it, Sold the car but made Paul (the new owner) aware of the suggest. Sure he was going to get it modified (counterzero on MRC).

Yer, charlie spoke to re:worx for me and they think it might have been the injectors maxing out.

IMHO If it happened just once at WOT then drive it gently to where you need to get it to.

Thats what i said too Cally!!!

need to meet up mate, your like ten mins away. I\'m in Stewartfield in East Kilbride. I know Alan Baird (does work on my Puma), and his boy, though forgot his name.

I have 850\'s all round though so dunno how they were maxing out... apparently something about overfuelling due to cold weather and a might need to upgrade my pump or something like that anyways.
I dont take my car out much at the moment due to still having jap tyres (lol) and its quite slippy out there just now. Once I get some wheels then I will be at the usual places knockhill etc. I am fancying a track day if you are up for it?
