Title: Car Not Starting
Post by: <--rYaN--> on January 04, 2007, 09:16:25 PM
Just thought i could get some peoples ideas on what could be the problem, what to look for etc with my car:

Car has been running fine (although due for a service) yet for the second time today it has refused to start, wont turn over or anything, when this happened the other day i went back ten mins later and it fired up instantly, so i would of thought if it had been a dead or dying battery then the car would of been slow to crank and "sounded" like it was dying.

Tonight though it refused to turn over, none of that clicking you get near a dead battery, just nothing, almost like the immobiliser is on (even though its not...)...

Oh and i brought the battery inside, put it on charge, yet the charger read full after 10 mins, so dont think its that.... starter motor, plugs?? engine?? :xconfused

Ideas anyone??? :Typing

I quite often get a click the first once or twice, then on the third time it starts. I suspect a sticky relay somewhere, but I haven\'t looked into it properly yet.

Sounds like a faulty starter motor, try putting it in first and rocking the car forward and back, this sometimes helps.
If not they are easy to change.

If you jack the car up its next to the gearbox on the passenger side. Not sure about checking them tho. hate electrical stuff, its the devil.

If there is nothing happening at all when you turn the key then it could be a faulty ignition switch at the back of the ignition barrel.

Will try them, have also been told it could be the starter solenoid, or the clutch switch (where is this?? how do i check it etc??)

I\'ve had a couple of similar instances on my previous FD. First - a poor earth connection somewhere (I didn\'t fix it so not sure where, I took it to a local garage and they found it), second the battery connection. With regards the battery, some replacement batteries have small diameter poles. I put a new battery on, and then occassionally had the same symptoms - absolutley nothing when the ignition was switched on. Eventually found that the connection to one of the battery poles was loose (not off, simply loose). I eventually used some foil wrapped around the pole to space it out, and was fine.

dodgy earth on the battery if its anything like I had once. Check the cables, and by checking I mean remove, clean, reattach.

Well i went to Asda today and when i came out it refused to start, rocking and all sorts wouldnt help, so called the RAC out, surprisingly he was there in 10 mins and new what to look for under the engine bay when i described the symptoms, he located the start motor cable and wiggled it as i tried to turn the car on and hey presto! fired up right away, so looks like its a dodgy connection with the starter motor, but useful for anyone else to know who has this problem starting that rather than crippling yourself rocking the car all over the place, have someone wiggle the ribbed cable that you can reach from the engine bay as you try and start it, worked for me!! :D

Hello mate

I had identical problem on my FD before as Andrewrx7- loose conection on the battery pole- nothing will work, the car would be dead - check that...

Also if you\'ve had a Rebuild in the past take the Lid off the fuse box (the Box thats got the EGI fuse in on the side of the battery) and make sure the Big power lead on the side is not loose or come off.
