Post by: azzamut on January 04, 2007, 01:25:51 PM

I am waiting for something mint, what is a good condition 1997 type R twin turbo worth with under 20k miles on it?

Also can you tell me what to look out for on these car when buying one? many thanks

dont want to p1ss on your bonfire mate but i think your asking for quite a lot, and you\'v just missed santa. i think getting one with 20k on it is going to be hard, let allone for £4k. good luck though and let us kmow how you get on.

Depends on the condition, but expect 7 to 8k+ ;)

You are right to wait for a good example to come along.

my 94 R2 with 24,000miles cost 8.5k a year ago, but that was when the market was good.

Clunking from the rear could be anything from poor suspension bushes, worn diff mounts to something like an aggressive LSD - each one will produce a clunk of it\'s own kind... but clunk is a fairly generic term :)

Good luck dude...

(Expect the engine to blow up at somepoint tho)

large mileage figures don\'t mean much if its had a rebuild... ignore the mileage and ask when it was rebuilt!!

it has recently been rebuilt. i know im not going to get a good one for 4k but thats what the ones i was previously looking at were priced at. this is just under 8grand! is that a fair price for one in v good condition, when i look at ebay there seems to be sucha variety of prices but most seem to be around the 4-5 k mark.

I am going to check the car out on sunday so will let you\'s know what happens...

will check the hints and tips now!

thanks everyone

I would expect a lot for 8 grand. If you want to spend that much then you\'ll get a lovely motor. Otherwise, you can get a good car for £6k with some spare cash for some immediate TLC.

Watch out for later models 95-96 as they tend not to have had engines rebuilt yet, 91-92 models almost all have had new engines but you have to look harder to find a tidy one. Much later models is a more difficult market.

Remember that almost the entire value of an RX-7 is in it\'s engine history. Most other costs are manageable like clunking from the rear or untidy interiors as the parts are surprisingly easy to pick up from forums like this. If I were spending 4-5k on a rex I would be budgeting for a new engine within 12 months. Spend 6-7k and you can pick one with a rebuild. Spend 8k and you should a find a decent modified and rebuilt one.
