Sorry for the size of these, but detail is important :)
Right found out tonight after a lot of struggling I\'m running 7\'s in the Rex. Below is a pic of it taken out... notice the muddy look and the short electrode. Below that is a semi-used ngk9..
Do the 7\'s run a same sized electrode in the middle as a 9... if so is that one shot to bits more or less...
Also can someone who know\'s 7\'s comment on the colour? It looked fudged or is it getting there? Should it be more liek the 9?
Much thanks
Andy Pandy
NGK7 - wots in there NOW

NGK 9\'s colour? Should the 7 be like this?

QuoteA BUR7EQ plug has the electrode much higher up inside the plug, thus it runs far "warmer" than a BUR9EQ
taken from the spark plug FAQ thread here (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=264)
Other than that i am bugger all use....(http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/traurig/sad-smiley-006.gif) But while i\'m here was that sumwhere in the UK which fitted 7\'s or was it imported with \'em just i had bugger all joy finding anywhere in UK that\'d do \'em (at proper price (http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/lynx/orngwink.gif))

No they were witht he car, got a couple of sets... these have an "R" written on them too so dunno if they are racing plugs or wot...
If there\'s some call I could do a mass buy on 7\'s, would wanna get about 10+ sets (i.e. 40+) to make it worth it though.. other than that I\'m replacing them with ones I got from Re:Worx - 9\'s which were £37.5 delivered, which includes a free padded jiffy bag
(http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/images/smilies/Dance.gif)
yeah looks like i\'ll have to give the 9\'s a try all round but wood be intreged as to how much (http://mindscraps.com/s/contrib/anym/dollar.gif) you could get 7\'s for if suitable quantities?
Si
shouldn\'t think they\'ll work out anymore than 9\'s if I can get em lobbed in a container with some other stuff. Until then I\'m sticking with the 9\'s
(http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/auto/car-smiley-003.gif)
infact I\'ll write off to USA and find out :)
i\'m sold if you can get \'em close to the price then as however well 9\'s may work i\'d prefer to do wots recommended (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/sehrgrosse/large-smiley-022.gif) lol

7\'s all around? Interesting. I had a set of 7\'s in my cars glove box when it arrived, they were badged as \'Racing\' plugs, in spite of them being normal surface discharge 7\'s...
Are you running stock boost un every thing Andy? If not then the warmer plugs all round mightn\'t be a great idea.
Depending what u can get em for from the US I\'d save the cash and do regular changes with cheapo 9\'s. NGK 7\'s and 8\'s are over 2000 yen in Japan, Denso a bit less. I think Glenn tried to get them in Aus but they were even more expensive...
9\'s all round seems to be the done thing.

Depending on the market the car was for, 7\'s and 9\'s IS the recommended. I dont think 7\'s all round is stock for any FD?
May be I\'m not reading some thing right here - it happens!
Andy, you\'ll probably find that the lower plugs are 7\'s and the upper are 9\'s.
If they are 7\'s all round, then it is a little dangerous.
Put new 7\'s in the leading (lower) and new 9\'s in the trailing (upper).
But you can get away with 9\'s all round but they can foul and you may have starting problems (depends how good your engine is).
yeah be right glen only managed to get a one out probably
Yeah mine were badged "R" too, think that meant racing ;)
Yeah I am running stock boost etc :)
yeah i was meaning i ideally wanted 7\'s & 9\'s in the appropriate places but was only commenting on 7\'s as well everyone has 9\'s already so not worried about getting them bad boys (http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/otn/party/bdaywink.gif)

9\'s start a car very well, so long as their condition is good.
I think the crucial thing with any plugs in a rotary is to change them very regularly. IMO I would change them as soon as the engine struggles to start, even if this means new plugs every few months.
Remember the 7\'s leading, 9\'s trailing combination is for stock cars only.
As soon as you start modifying your car, the real danger becomes high rev and load situations, where a 7 plug could quite easily start running too hot and cause rough running / detonation problems.
For the cost of a set of 9\'s every few months, is it worth risking losing a seal?
IMO anyone running more than 10 psi / 0.7 bar should not be running 7\'s, especially if they have a heavy right foot.
If you are at the one bar mark, you really need to be running even colder plugs - in the 10.5 to 11.5 heat range. This cold a plug does start giving cold start problems!
Here endeth the gospel according to Max ;)

i thought i would have a look at my plugs on the weekend and they were really dirty ! gave them a good clean spent like 15min on each one ! LOL !
anyways ....
i noticed i had 9 NGK r in the bottom and 10 NGK r in the top
is this a good thing ?
i never have any starting problems ?
Shaq
Shouldnt be a problem.
On a Rotary I personally see plugs like oil i.e. a consumable you replace as often as you can....
I\'m finding it increasingly hard to find a local ramp... can anyone list the exact tools to get for take all the housing etc off from above... I know how to do it, just need to know the tools so I can ensure I have them all
Cheers
Andy
You just have to persevere Andy! :(
10mm socket/spanner and a screw driver to remove intake elbow from between i/c and t/b
halfords spark plug socket
small 3/8" drive ratchet
latex gloves for the adventurous :)
Just have to keep trying another direction with the ratchet until you find the right combo for each plug...
i changed mine from underneath the car, jack it up put it on axle stands and there is a nice gap you can work through to get to the sparkies.
took me about 1 hour.
Shaq
Cheers Rich, got most of that other than the socket set... that\'s on my xmas list hehe
Shaq.. mines dam low and it wont fit most large jacks under the front or sides... you got a jack that could go under somminc low?
Borrow a skimpy 3/8" drive ratchet from some one. Get your latex glovies on. Find YOUR way to get at each of them.
First time - 2 hrs of \'f#ck this\', \'f#ck that\' and \'OUCH!\'
Second time - 5 to 10 minutes, including a smoke afterward :D
You can do it Poggy!
that\'s the 2nd time you\'ve mentioned those latex gloves hehe
I have a fresh box of 100 pairs to use! :D
I\'m sure I can do it, just that I think my mechanic was going through that "aww crap design, why they put that like that" type cursing last night and I he was saying its so much easier to get to them from underneath and said " I wouldn\'t bother from the top"
bah I wanna do just scared :D
group buy on sum KY?
oops wrong thread (http://mindscraps.com/s/contrib/blackeye/Eyecrazy.gif) or is it (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/tweetz/moon.gif) lol
Si (not even daring to think of plug removal i\'m bad enough at picking my nose (http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/otn/laughing/astrosmiley.gif))
Andy,
Drive it onto a plank of wood..... that should give you another inch or so to get a jack under the car...
if that is not enough drive onto a larger plank
:)
or failing that do a search on the internet for gaining an extra inch i\'m sure there\'s a few sites (http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/contrib/tweetz/ky.gif) lol
Si (getting coat again (http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/cwm/cwm/spin2.gif))
Andyp
yeah this lowered thing is annoying!
(i luv it really!), mine is lowered too… :D
what i have to do is drive the car on a plank of wood, take the standard Jack out of the boot jack the car up with this then i have this 2 ton hydraulic trolley jack and then jack it up with this.(jack it up in the middle on the chassis somewhere)
Oh yeah don’t forget the axle stands have two of them on each side I put them on the chassis.
Shaq
if you guys struggle to get plugs, try my local mazzy dealer (robinsons, leicester)... they got some for me within a couple of days and they were about £7 each inc vat...
other than that, I use J & Sons in Kidlington, oxon, as they can get pretty much anything within 24hrs!... ...cost me about £40 for oil, filter, and plugs from them, and they\'re v.helpful. Not sure if they will deliver or not tho\'...
b :)
Cheers catboy i take it that price is just for NGK9\'s thou? (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/ups/sicdeth/headscratch.gif) nice & local i note thou so will you be game for a midlands type RX meet in the new year?(http://www.computerpannen.com/cwm/otn/ez/ezpi_biglaugh.gif)
Si
7\'s and 9\'s I think (whatever went in the turbo II)
Found mazda were the cheapest (Halfords were about £20 a plug), although they knew bugger-all about rotaries (even when I went for a test drive in their RX8 - the sales guy said he knew it didnt have pistons, other than that he wasnt sure...)
would be interested in a rx7 meet, however Im minus RX7 at the moment... ...had to loose the 2nd car at the begining of the summer, but am looking for another to replace my old FC as soon as I can afford... I have a semi-restored merc to finish and sell, then I should be in the game for another!
If your doing any track-days at donnington or mallory or anything, then let me know, and I\'ll pop up
