Title: flooding help..
Post by: Alex T on December 31, 2006, 11:17:14 AM
Cant post in flooding thread for some reason..?!
So can someone help here..?

Glen, I\'ve tried PM\'ing you but wont let me for some reason?!
I need a bit of a rundown of this if poss, the EGI fuse bit in particular!

I\'ve got a series 3 FD, which has apparantly got an engine from a \'newer\' rx7 in it. When I got the car, it started and didn\'t die, but was very lumpy and burbly, sounded very like a TVR !!

Now, a couple of days later, I started the car and was going to move it accross drive (but have it running for a few mins) but as I got half way accross the drive, it cut out (it may well have been me stalling it to be honest) but didn\'t start again, so I had to roll it back accross the drive!

The car should be going into Haywards in next couple of weeks, to be set up with an Apexi FC and commander. But I had the RAC come out to try and start it. He removed the plugs and blowtorched them and he also removed the fuel relay. The car tried to start a couple of times, but just didnt fire.. So he gave up.

I now read it wont actually stop fuel when removing relay on the FD3\'s, so I need to know about this EGI fuse, to see if this helps...

Any help appreciated!

I guess this is the Thread you have seen? http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=604&highlight=flooded

First off before anything Check your Leads and put some fresh plugs in.

If i was realy Stuck and could not get my FD going and was sure it was just flooded, i would Tow it round the block a few times. Its very common if you have been trying to get it going for some time for it to have so much fuel knocking about that it Simply fouls the plugs every Revolution.

So Try the EGI fuse out mothod first if this fails Turn it over with the Plugs and EGI out (so you clear as much fuel out of the bore as poss, refit the Plugs (after they have ben Warmed up on ither a Blow lamp or Gas Cooker) and make sure there is some juice in the battery, now with every thing back together tow it round the block a few time but don\'t try and Bump start it like a Normal Boinger, Put it in Second gear get to about 25-30mph and let the clutch out slowly with the IGN on and let the momentum of the car turn the engine over for a Few minutes (be carfull opening the Throttle to much when your doing all this as you don\'t want to hit the Towing car if your WOT in second and it decides to go)

I have not had any problem starting a flooded car this way, If you tow it not only does it turn the Motor Quicker but it does\'nt use the Battery for the Starter so your spark is Dramaticly better.

Hope this helps.

BTW you won\'t be able to PM becouse your not a Full member.

Look at the bottom of the page what does it say in your Posting Rules Box? are they all "May" post? it could be you are restricted becouse of your None mwembership status.

What problem are you having with the EGI fuse? Finding it?
The EGI fuse is in the fuse box right next to the battery in the front of the car. There is a black fuse box and marked on the lid is \'EGI 30A\'. Take the cover off and pull out that fuse. Then follow the instructions in the flood thread.

Its has been very lumpy idleing since I got it yes, but apparantly this was due to the engine (from newer rx7) requiring setting up properly..Since getting it, I had only started it once myself, and think I flooded it!
Bearing in mind, when the car was delivered to me (although on back of recovery truck) it did start straight away and drive off the truck !

Tony, yes I was wondering where the EGI fuse was located, thanks for that!

grizzly, thanks for advice, I may try the tow start if I manage to get the car up our long driveway! Will try plugs and EGI fuse again and see if I can get it started.

Thanks for the help guys.

Alex

U may want to get it Compresion tested if you still struggle to get it running on both Rotors.

I hope its not as serious as that, but I\'d imagine Haywards would do that anyhow.?

Alex, lets start with new sparkplugs before we all jump on the compression / bad engine bandwagon.

Hi Alex, not sure you saw my reply on the other thread,

Sounds quite possibly like the loom is not compatible with your ECU, unless you have changed the old loom onto your new engine.

Personally I feel you may be better off being patient and letting Carl check things out for you as you wouldn\'t really want to try and drive off down the road with it not running correctly and find you kill the engine due to something thats not totally compatible in the electrics department

Really don\'t like the sound of " it was very lumpy and burbly, sounded very like a TVR !!"

Clive,

According to the previous owner the engine \'"just connected to the current loom".. So I assume it may well be from a newer RX7, b ut would still be in the 91-95 bracket??

PS, cant remember where I made another thread?!..

You may want to check the contacts on the EGI relay. They should be open circuit (as you hold it in your hand) Fair to say, I think I damaged it a wee bit for this problem. I found a real bitch of a battery drain after reinserting this due to flooding. If it is a short circuit, just (gently) prize the contacts apart. My RX used to bang and fart when I gave the pedal the good news, but she\'s as sweet as a nut now.
