Title: What to do with my RX7?
Post by: Jame5 on December 29, 2006, 08:01:34 PM
I\'m all confused and don\'t know what to do. I\'ve just started contract work in europe, germany for now. I wanted to sell the RX7 for an R33 GTR. I went for a drive in an R33 GTR 400bhp approx. I was expecting something quick but I was gutted so I\'ve gone off the skyline idea. Now I want an evo 6:2Rolleyes  I\'ve been changing my mind like the wind changes direction. I\'ve just looked on the german version of autotrader. The cheapest FD3 is going for 17k euros, (£11.5k). Maybe I should take my rx over there and try selling it? or trading it would be good for an M3 or :god Audi RS4 (they start at 20k euros there:Giggle )  Anyone know about taking my car to Germany to sell? Or someone just tell me to do something sensible?

Oh and my hotel is directly opposite a Mazda dealership.

I don\'t think your going to be happy whatever you swap to now you\'ve got the RX bug in you. Look at Gurj had two skylines and looking for another RX already in the space of 6 months. Don\'t forget if you take yours over there to sell it won\'t make as much as a LHD version.

I know, decissions decissions! I was gutted with the skyline I went out in. No punch in the back feel. Even if I was given 10k euros in germany I\'d be chuffed (£6.5k). Has gurj sold that R33 gtr he had?  That one looked stunning. What has he got so bored of skylines for?

At the moment I think 4wd would be ideal as I hope to take a few snowboarding trips while in Europe. We all know RX7s are bit lairy in poor weather. I do love the rx7 though. My eyes wonder when cars like RS4s go past.

In all seriousness, I have recently come back to the uk and lived in Germany for 9 years, and you will find it hard to sell your Fd in Germany as it was marketed there too. If you atre going to live in Germany permanantly, or at least register your car there, you will be VERY restricted on what mods there are on the car and they will sting you for emissions! If you have any questions on current German \'sticking\' points, get in touch with Iwan.
Cheers,

John

would never put a v8 in it!! don\'t go starting war now!

I do fancy an evo but if i changed for an evo maybe I\'d not get that nice smooth motorway performance that I have from the rx7.

Scrap the German idea then.

Where were you living out there John? Did you enjoy it? I\'ve only done a month out there so far in Frankfurt. Seemed ok apart from the germans like sausage waaaayyy too much.

Jame5,
I\'m German but moved from Germany to the UK about eight years ago (so my knowledge is slightly out of date) and I\'ve played with cars there a lot.

The fact that you have a UK registered car will make it easier to re-register your FD over there (as opposed to almost impossible) but you still will have to comply with German regulations before you\'ll be able to register the car. Also keep in mind that Germany was a lot further ahead than the UK when it come to environmental legislation so you\'ll have to meet more stringent emissions limits than you have to in the UK.

In contrast to popular opinion, it is very possible to get a heavily modified car registered in Germany but you\'ll have to go through the so-called "Einzelabnahme" and list each and every modification to the car, be it mechanical or cosmetical. The way you normally do this is that you discuss the modifications with the TÜV engineers before you make them and work with any restrictions they give you. This obviously not possible in your situation and may mean that you\'ll have to remove certain mods.

You will also have to put the emissions gear including cat back on the car and either somehow convince the testers that the car meets the original emissions or get it tested at huge expense (something like 3k euros was the last figure I heard). Rotaries used to be taxed by weight (same as lorries) but I think they changed that using the same 1.3/2.6 formula that\'s so popular over here. Tax is by displacement and emissions and I\'d expect that you\'ll get hit fairly hard by that. Plus, the tax for older cars tends to get hiked every now and then, with the lower tax bands reserved for the more modern cars.

On top of that you\'ll need to change the speedo for a km/h one or put markers on the current speedo, change the headlights for German-spec ones and if the rear or any other lights aren\'t E-marked, change those as well unless you can convince the authorities that this is not possible/feasible.

Wheel rims are another problem area - expect lots of trouble if the wheels aren\'t E-marked as they won\'t normally let you have those on the car. Best bet IMHO is to go back onto standard rims.

Oh, and don\'t expect that you\'ll get a small plate that fits a Japanese/US-sized number plate recess either; as the FD was available in Germany I wouldn\'t put it past them to require you to change the rear bumper to a German-spec one so it can accomodate the full-size plate. They\'ve even tried that with me with US import cars that were never available in Germany.

All in all I\'d say you\'re better off keeping it UK-registered. I know I\'ll do that with mine :D.

EDIT: Forgot to mention - the insurance on an imported FD in Germany is likely to be a belter, too. Fully comp is normally only available as an add-on to a TPO policy and is massively expensive for pretty much any car. Most people in Germany go TPFT (well, the German equivalent) after the car\'s a few years old simply because it\'ll be too expensive otherwise.

HTH,
Timo

out of curiosity, do similar restrictions apply if you wish to register a UK car in Belgium? (just wondering as it was a Belgian guy who took my old TII back to his homeland)

Something i\'ve considered also. Not sure if I could register a german car at me hotel address though. :chat M3s seem to fetch good money over there. RS4s seem to go for cheap compared to here.

Huge wealth of information there timo. Thanks for that. When I get back to Germany I will check out the latest gen to see what I can do.

I just sent some photos to someone interested in my car and I thought it looked nice. :rollin

Tim = Timo...you kept that a secret!!
If you have any modifications on a German registered car, you have to have paperwork for EVERY LTTLE THING. if you don\'t have the paperwork because the items were\'nt bought in Germany you have to pay big bucks for a Tüv accreditation.

Cheers,
John

Hi James,

I originally made the mistake of buying a R34 GTT as the wife liked the "look" of it, sadly was auto and probably slower than the SLK we had :Hammer  and handled very badly. Got the chance to swop it for a R33 GTR with much lower miles and lots of trick bits on it and running more power and of course the legendary 4 wheel drive system. Looks wise its cool and gets lots of attention but to me thw whole package is flawed as they aren\'t as quick as people think, although 3rd and 4th gears pull very strongly, and just dont have the feel of the FD for me :InLove

Will be looking to get a FD back around Feb / March time hopefully ? The only sticking point at the mo is the very bad feedback almost all of the rotary specialists are getting, doesn\'t fill me with confidence of getting either ripped off or having bad workmanship. Do not ask for examples of this as my personal gripe with the whole rotary thing at the mo sadly

Gurj

I remember seeing that R33 GTR for sale on pistonheads. It was my favourite at the time but just didn\'t have the money to buy it. I went to look at a well spec\'d 400bhp one recently. I was gutted how slow it felt. It didn\'t give the punch of my rx7 or my old sunny gtir. I know the evos feel punchy so I was going to look at buying a 6. After taking my RX7 to cornwall though i was happy with it. Maybe I just need to treat it to some bits to make me happy again.

TBH James,

It would be better to change something on the rx7 to make it enjoyable again ie new wheels or different decals to make it appear a different car, trust me it would most likely be a mistake to sell it :Giggle

Keep the 7 and buy an older m3 (e36) or old m5 (e34), im sure they cost peanuts over there...

Unless you\'ve registered with the authorities in Germany and given your hotel address as your permanent German residential address, the answer to that one is no :). You have to have a permanent address in Germany (and the paperwork to prove it) before you can register a car there.

I had a Supra TT 6S manual running Bpu mods and went for a drive in a freinds evo9 running 480bhp...i just laughed!! it was the most over rated car i have ever driven...the supra would rape it from 30 onwards or rolling start.off the mark mind was amazing, but it had launch control.also liked the grip.

Seems like the best idea for me. Maybe I\'ll do that and leave the RX7 in the garage for a while and swap in the insurance over. M3s are cheaper here though. I need something that won\'t let me down abroad.
