Hi All,
I was sitting here thinking and talking about my ReX and my attention got turned to the millage showing on the clocks 100200 ish which roughly translates into 62000 miles. As i have been reading that rebuilds are mainly between 50 & 60000. Is there any way of telling if it has been rebuilt prior to being shipped over (no history sent with car) and if not is it law that these engines give out around this milage or can it keep on running for tens of thousands of miles to come? Or do you think it may be rebuild time soon?
Cheers Garith.
you could get it compresion tested will give you a idea of how healthy the engine is
hi little ant
do you know what compression readings should show on a good engine.
thanks
Compression readings ?
I gather anything above 6\'s is good for that mileage car, below 6\'s will mean its almost done for but not quite, high 6\'s means it healthy for a while longer just yet, if the readings are over 7\'s then it might have had a rebuild a time ago ?
Low 5\'s and its about fooked ................. sorry :Giggle
As for mileage nowhere is it written in stone that 60K is rebuild time, all depends on how well it has been maintained and how its been driven, may last past 70-75K might only last another few thou ???
Hope that helps my good man,
Gurj :wave
hi gsb
thanks for that,i bought a car with a 60000 on it. and after reading stuff on here ive been worried it needs a rebuild. but its been compression tested by Pip and all readings are above 7.
zed
Thats a fairly fresh lump then!!!
Nothing to worry about, just keep on driving!!!

A compression test doesnt give you any guarantees unfortunately. A good indicator of overal wear may be - but it doesnt mean it wont go bang next week :Talking1 You could have 7s all over and then have a coolant o ring groove in a 12 year old plate break out the next day...
As for rebuild mileage, the most I\'ve personally seen on an FD is getting on for 90K, the least I\'ve seen was less than 20K on a late car. And loads in the 30-60K bracket (unless all the \'low mileage\' FDs imported into the UK are all clocked ofc - in which case who knows!:Yawn)
Personally, Id be happy if Pips happy and just enjoy the car. Start saving for a rebuild and then you wont cry to much if (when) it does go :Thumbs-up

I have oftern wondered about the life expectancy of these engines.
There are quite a few who have their engines rebuilt with reusing some parts because they are "within tolerence" but the fact remains that they are still worn. You would expect a new engine rebuilt with new Mazda parts to last longer than one which has been rebuilt replacing out of tolerence parts. If I was doing mine then I would still use these in tolerence parts.
Opperating conditions will depend as in start stop journeys and short ones. You hear of quite a few engines in bigger country\'s which die at a bigger mileage.
The previous owner of my car had a new engine at pretty much 100,000miles
yeah, i thought i was buying smart, got the car with 16k on a £7k rebuild, (the invoice is 3 pages of parts) but sure enough, front casing let go and water seal went. so your better off just expecting it to cost you money, its just when is the question.
Hi all,
Thanks for the input from you all. So basically i am driving a time bomb thats ticking to destruction, As it will let go!!!! dont know where dont know when but she is going to go. I have still not got back the registration yet so still not driving so when i can i will be straight down ReWorx for a compression test and a once over. ANOTHER question would a preemtive strike be any cheaper i.e having the rebuild down before she blows? Less damage Less Money to spend? Let me know what you think and how much a Rebuild will cost?
Cheers Garith.
There\'s nothing to say these engines are going to fail prematurely. An engine will wear out no matter who makes it. The sr18det engine in the 200sx has a weak point with the big end bearings wearing out - it\'s just wear and tear. 2 people I know have also had to rebuild their scoobie engines with less than 80,000 miles on the clock.
The way I look at it is : I do very little miles in a year so a 60,000 mile engine will last me 12 years! It\'s also very unique, sounds great and goes like stink! If it couldn\'t get any better, well it does because it is in the best looking car ever to be made!

In fairness, u could say that about a lot more cars than just RX7s :)
Rebuilding early is swings and roundabouts I tihnk, you could save damage from say coolant probems, and then end up replacing components that although serviceable for another 10-15K miles are too close to being tossed to be worth rebuilding with. Start saving early - and replace as much as you can possibly afford to when the rebuild is needed - if you are going to keep the car for any length of time.
