Title: porting templates
Post by: catboy on December 15, 2003, 09:17:33 AM
has anyone used any porting templates to pport an engine?...

I have experience porting mini heads, lotus twinks, etc., but never attempted a rotary...    ...any information of peoples experiences would be great.

Also, what are peoples thoughts on porting for road and track use?...    it would be a daily, but would want to get some track time in it...     ...I can put up with a fairly highly strung car; I love the sound of a bridgeport idling, but having driven one, dont think I could put up with that every-day!...

thanks in advance

I used to own a turbo II, and before that had a 1st gen. I currently have a \'68 mercedes show car, and a daily, but I am looking at getting rid of the daily, spending some of the money on the house, and buying a cheaper daily drive...    ...problem is I cant put up with boring cars, so I am considering another 1st gen, or maybe an EFi 2nd gen, but want to pep it up a bit :D

As this is going to be on a serious budget, I was considering doing a re-build and some porting work myself, and wondered what the porting templates were like?...    I have heard mixed reviews, mostly about the racing beat templates, and wondered if there were any others, what people thought of them, etc...

I doubt I could afford to get someone else to do it for me (Im kinda aiming at about £1500 to £2000 for buying and fiddling with the car, so Im not expecting miracles :( )

Templates from racing beat are pretty small for the opening of stock porting,do you want to gain some good power?
If so you should consider a turbo 2,they are pretty good power wise (200hp)and are available for your budget. In fact £2000.00 should get you a very good one with a rebuilt engine.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards

i had a G-reg turbo II, black UK spec, except upped to 297bhp...    ...miss it, funnilly enough :)
A turbo II would be ideal, but was thinking it would be more like 3k (thats about what I spent/sold mine for)

might have to consider that instead of fiddling with a cheaper one...    would still be interested in a little porting though, so any more info on templates would be good

the size of the racing beat ports was the down side some people came up with...    Ideally I would like a decent power hike, so I guess something bigger than a street port might be best.

As I said already, a phat bridge port would be best sound wise, but I think it would drive me mad after a while...     ...any recommendations on port types/sizes...     ...what are you guys using?..

PS...    thanks for all the answers so far

i can imagine a \'phat bridge-port\' would sound very nice - my street port has completely changed the engine note, very \'burbly\' and much more fruity.

Will be good when it\'s run-in to hear it on WOT!
