Title: multimeter reading for coil resistance
Post by: Eddie on December 23, 2006, 11:57:54 PM
Hi all cars not been runnign correct and whilst trying to diagnose the problem I have hit a stumbling block.

I was wondering if someone could please clarify something for me.
Not sure if I am using the multimeter correctly, I need to know what setting I should be using on the multimeter, I know its the ohm setting but which value is correct, should I just be using the lowest value which gives a reading?

here is my present situation

I am checking my coils at present and I am checking the A-B primary trailing coil winding pic below and resistance is showing about 01.2 on all three coils I have the multimeter set to 200 which is the lowest setting on my multimeter.
The factory manual says this should be below 1.0
On the secondary winding on the trailing I am getting infinity

The leading coil is showing 01.1 on the a-b with the multimeter set at 200 again
12.80 on the secondary coil winding with the multimeter set to 20K.

Can anyone tell me if I have the correct setting on the multimeter thus getting the correct reading?
I have the following settings I can select form the multimeter
200
2000
20k
200k
2000k

Please anyone help me.

Cheers

Just use the lowest setting on your meter it sounds like your doing it right.

Chers for that allstaruk at least I know I am not totally getting it wrong.

So seems I am on the hunt for new coils then.

Anyone got some?

Thanks

Just to clarify

What is not within tollerance and by how much?

It sounds like you think the trailing coil is faulty.

If you change the meter to 2000 , what does the secondary winding say for the trailing coil?

I doubt a faulty trailing coil would make a discernable difference to the way the car runs.

Thanks for you input guys I would be lost without the input fomr club members.

Allallstaruk I think all the primary windings are out of spec on all three coils?

Martiny if I move the setting to 2000 whilst checking the leading 2nd windings I get nothing just the standard 1 on the left of the multimeter screen.

Its been running just not correctly so just checking anything which may be at fault before I take it to be mapped.

so do you guys think that using the 200 setting on the multimeter and getting a reading of 01.2-3 ish for primary coils that this is not within spec?

Cheers once again.
Title: just to add to my confusion

Been reading up on the us forums and found a refrence to getting the multimeter restitance reading first then take that away from the reading I get on the coils.

So should I be touching the multimeter probes togeather to see what resistance I am getting then subtract that from the reading I get from the coils?

I get a o.6 resistance reading on the 200 setting with both probes touching. I get 1.3 ish on the coils so should so if I take away the 0.6 I get 0.7 which would put the coils into in spec.

Also I have read the coils will give lower reading when cold and could be in spec but when hot give totaly differnt reading anyone any experience of this?

Sorry to bother you lot again.

No bother, dude, we are all here to help.

I would say that you are correct to subtract 0.6 from your reading.

In any electrical circuit, resistance increases with heat,  - but by how much, I dont know !

Thanks again for you help, I know i am on the right path and this is stuff I will never forget.

Thanks Martiny

You are correct for taking 0.6 from the reading if thats the resisatance you leads are giving you, so that would definately put your coils into spec.

Just encase we can help why are you checking your coils what problem do you have?

So it does look like they are in spec when cold, I wonder what the read out would be if hot, something I would have to check.

My car problems started when I flooded the engine after numerous tries to start here she eventually kicked in but it took 2 days
of repeating the procedure so I thought my coils had taken a battering

Now when turning the key to third position and not starting her she sounds different to how she used to prime and get ready
I kept getting an electrical clicking from under the uim that I was not used to hearing so my first port of call was the coils, leads and get brand new plugs, got some magnicor leads and new plugs just thought get the coils checked as well whilst the UIM is off.
What else could it be from under the UIM maybe a solenoid of some kind I know under the uim I have a few.
Was not sure if it could be the fuel system priming somehow? I need to get her to WGT to get it tuned but that’s over 60 miles and don’t want to
Run her down like this, which is why I am trying to get her running better at least

Whilst the UIM is off I am removing the acv and blanking it off and I may do the non sequential set-up as well or the simplified twin set-up.
I found a couple of broke hoses that I think have been causing a non-boost issue the last time she was out. put your foot down and she
lost all power at 2.5K stumbled if I let off she seemed ok when not on boost. Would these broken pipes make the car run badly at idle as well maybe.

Mods are
Trust FMIC
Decat
Hks down pipe
Apexi filters
Apexi and commander which shows up nothing out of the ordinary on the sensor side of things.
Air pump removed
Greedy pullies

Any advise as usual very welcomeJ

have you..

1) reset the ecu?

2) read the error codes?

Hi again

1) yes reset and ran the apexi ecu through its learning process, even tried putting the old 8 bit ecu back in to se if it made a differnce.

2) How do I read error codes on the PFC, the commander seem to show no problems with anything.

Oh - I didnt realise you had aftermarket ecu.

Have you checked the earth for the coils?

I will be checking all these now thanks for the pointer.
I have already chacked the batter earth and other engine earths.
