Title: \'tis the season... For battery death!
Post by: RemarkLima on December 23, 2006, 02:27:34 PM
Been driving the RXS fine, went to a party last night, drove back home no problems... Then this morning, turn the key and the battery is dead as a doornail! Can just about manage to light up the dash!

So, I htink the cold has finally killed the battery, which is fair enough.

I was thinking of getting a smaller battery and wiring up a plug for a solar trickle charger inside so I\'d not have to worry so much about it becoming flat. But is there a smaller battery that\'s recommended that I can get pretty quick? Even on out of a smaller Mazda or something maybe?

I\'d get a small racing battery but getting one at short notice is pretty tricky!

Also, is there an easy way to make the cigar lighter permanatly live rather that wiring the solar charger in?

Cheers,
Mark

Just to follow up, got a standard battery for now as it was short notice, it all looked like Halfrauds one needed to be ventilatted so found another shop with a sealed battery. Much better IMHO!

Anyway, car seems to be running much better all round, sometime it\'d stutter a bit but that\'s cured. Same with the starting on one rotor, I think it may have been lack of battery power now, but time will tell! I still think I\'ll get a solar trickle charger just to be on the safe side!

Oh, and the multimetre read 14.9v when it was running so looks like the altenator is working well! Phew!

Same is happening to me all this week!!! Only put a new battery on this time last year.. Also my battery wont jump start off another battery, any idea what the problem might be with it??

Have you still got the receipt? If so it should be gaurentee\'d for at least 2 years so go and get a new one... It could have been just a fault in the battery.

But has the battery run out of juice and needed jump starting often? I think this can help kill them prematurely!

nope its only just started happening.
Ive had a turbo timer fitter just before this started happening, but cant really see that causing the problem as it was profesionally fitted!

Still not sure if it is a duff battery cos wouldnt it still start with the jump leads connected to another battery??
Gonna take it to quick fit tomorrow and had a free battery check, so hopefully it should get sorted soon!

I did read somewhere that some have had trouble getting it started even when jumped off another car but as always YMMV ;) I\'ve started mine off a jump pack when I first picked it up and it\'s been OK but then it has finally died.

Still, £40 well spent and think I\'ll head to Maplins tom and get a solar charger :D

Sounds like a good idea actually, think i might have to invest in one also!

Yep, if the car\'s not used much it\'s well worth it! I used to have one but I think I left it at goodwood sadly...

However, IIRC the cigar lighter isn\'t live when the ignition is off, so there needs to be some way to either wire it direct to the battery or make the cigar lighter permanantly live. I guess you could splice into the stereo loom, which has a permanant live feed...

Haha I just posted a topic then saw yours :)

Mine is completely dead, was empty of fluid as well!!

Need to see if a new Corsa battery will start an FD and keep it going!

Changed my battery the other day so mine is working perfectly again ( until something else breaks or konks out!) Turns out it was a faulty battery, one of the cells was cream crackered, apparently a rare fault on batteries these days. Still cost me £70 though!

Excellent :) I ended up opting for an Optima Red Top as I\'m relocating it anyways and it\'ll be running a couple of amps once I buy them and hook them up.

I was thinking of a small battery... What size did you go for? Is there enough amps to get it going and keep the car running with lights, wipers and a stereo going?
