Slight reversal from my last thread about what car would you stick a high power rotary in,
My car is virtually sorted in all areas so i am considering a different power plant if my engine sells. I have had rotaries for 14 years now and i know a lot of their good points and bad points.
I also know a lot of you will probably :flamed me for this suggestion,
I have seen what an RE can do, i have got a lot out of an REW and also my current TII, I have also been involved with a 20B FD so i was just considering other options.
I am quite liking this one at the momnt, now i know that the LS engine has been mentioned quite a bit and can get to 400 bhp not sure if thats rw or fw) with a little \'tinker\'ing (i may need some support with this thread tinker) but i saw this and it makes 500 plus in its stock form, it should fit in an FC without too much grief...... :xconfused
i think it would be a nice package and more economical and reliable than a 20b and certainly a lot cheaper! not to sure about the weight distribution but then i cant drive very well so i am not that sensitive to things like that as long as its not too bad.......
I know that there was an FD with a cossy lump in it but they dont really get more power than i have at the moment.....
Yes,I am liking that one Ant!:chat

This is a well known site, you have prbably already seen it.

How big is the Jag V12 ???
Shaun
HA!,Ha! Done that in the 90\'s, out of 1973 5.3LV12 280hp/310lbft and very heavy alloyblock, heads etcc.
Too many details, not worthing install into FC and sold the engine to E Type guy
How about some of the bigger BMW engines ???

It is by far the largest car engine I have ever worked on ... would look more at home stuck on the front of a WWII fighter than under the bonnet of a car.
What about a supra straight 6, Nissan straight 6, Toyota/Lexus V8
BMW V8\'s are nice, seen a few in hotrods, no idea how expensive they are though!
rb26 from skyline
Either the ls v8, or a toyota v8. Loads of tuning potential that is as extensive as your wallet might ever be!
cheers, michael.
how about Mazda 3L diesel:2eek

Judd V10 :chat
i have a nice 4.4 V8 in my BMW daily driver, its got 330 lbs of torque but only 286 bhp, spose you could bump that up to just over 300 with filters and exhaust etc but not really enough power.
Those Dodge V10 8.3l engines come with ECU, end of the prop, engine, loom and gearbox with clutch. That cant be too dificult to get in the FC can it???
It has 505 bhp and 525 lbs of torque, will rev to 6k rpm and has 400 ftl or torqu at 2000 rpm........ and thats in stock form, with good air inlet and free exhaust you must make another 40 bhp, and the best thing is no boost which means it will do it all day long..... all the way to 100k miles
Tinker where are you?

yep rebuild after 3,000km :2eek

the viper motor is long !,the problem with the fd is they need plenty of power to make conversions worth while i have a very well developed rover 5.0 in mine making 330bhp but it was good but not that special ,i looked at lots of options bmw not enough power and very expensive to tune, lexus v8 same no torque,toyota/nissan 6 to tall/long,ls1 cheap ,cheap to tune realiable and they fit ,and you can take them out to over 7.0l (i ve just ordered a 7.0l bottom end ,hoping for 600ft lb ) there is something about v8 rumble ! mind you a 4 rotor takes some beating for sound !!!!!!
572 v8 engine. 620bhp@5500rpm, 650 lb-ft @ 4500 rpm

mine will be going an FC, but i know what you mean about needing lots of power, i have 460 already so i would need at least that or more plus loads more torque to make it worth while.
Do you think the V10 is tooo long to fit?
Did you make your own mount/subframe or did you go for the grannyspeed jobby?
regards
Tony
Nothing is impossible!
Easy to talk about what engine fitting in but!!!,how about the rear end??
Jag\'s locdiff or lorry\'s diff etcccc.. as mazda\'s too weak to handle the torque.
The other scary notion is that a-spec is making a turbo kit for the viper engine too ! Them crazy yanks !

i dont have a mazda diff so it will hopefully be ok. plus the cars not setup for drag racing so no hard launches to cope with.
Also: Grannys do rear end conversions for the RX7 if need be

thats that sorted then! i\'ll have one of them!
made my own mounts, the grannyspeed is for left drive and i dont like the way they do it ,the viper does look the business but the ls is cheaper and more avaliable check out //www.torquecentral.com
i have learnt a fair bit about rotaries over the years but it would be a whole new learning curve for me with a V8. From what i have seen an LS2 (6ltr 400hp) is a lot of money unless you know where i can get one cheaper, the ls1 wont have enough power for me andi dont know how to make more power out of it. I dont want to give it to some one else to get the power as i can only afford to do the work myself. The viper would have enough power straight off........... for now!
What back end do you use in yours, the one on ebay last week had a 750 bmw diff fitted somehow..
I\'d love to see some pics of your engine bay if you wouldnt mind.
You can email them antnicuk@ntlworld.com
also, what gearbox do you use?
Quite a few people over torque central are using stroked LS2\'2 to make 427 (6 liter) and as with tinker 27 aiming for around 600rwhp. Tinker are you an engineer or/and familiar with V8\'s? anyway if you were starting off again would you start with the LS1 or the LS2 with 427ci being the endgame?
Neil
dont know if the V10 out of this would fit...
i think the car would stretch but my wallet wouldnt!
a ls1 with a cam and valve springs and set up properly will make 425-450bhp (crank) 427ci is 7 litre not 6 litre, i am going for a 421ci so not quite 7 litre but close ,it is cheaper to stroke a ls2 (6 litre) than buy a 7 litre ,a std ls1 with a cam and flowed heads make good power and the parts are cheap especially now with the dollar so weak ,the thing is they make power from very low revs and are very smooth ,a 5.7 with minor mods is the best value (2001>), and you can buy a bolt in stroker kit to 6.3 for sensible money .
The LSx engines are a good fit, hinson supercars do subframe and various components for putting the block into a FD3S (unsure if its Lh/rh drive only). As for tuning the engines, have a look at "How to build High-Performance Chevvy LS1/LS6 V-8s" ISBN 1-884089-84-4 This book makes claims to build or at least give some instructions on how to get 500hp+ from a LS1 block.
Coincendently im thinking about going down the same route with my FD because one of my turbos just went pop (after being reconditioned!).
I would probably go for a LS1 (Pontiac GTO block) and rebuild with some aftermarket bits and bob, would be able to get 400->500 hp from it according to various sources.
And then if thats not enough for you theres always plonking a turbo charger on there - some companies in the US build kits for the Pointiac GTO, so space permitting (I/C positioning etc..) it would probably be possible to use similar specs in the turbo kits to roll your own :)
It seems people in the US really like this conversion and seem to have a lot of success with it.
J
I really need a guaranteed 500 crank as i have a reliable 460 at the moment so need it to be worth while. Although taking into account the extra torque and lower power band, 460 bhp v8 would probably be a quicker car.
It would be a tight fit to get 2 turbo\'s in there but it has been done a few times.......
I still want the V10 though cos i\'m greedy ! If it dont fit i\'ll just have to take the jigsaw to the bonet!
Would you need two turbo chargers? Your talking about running one of each bank of 4 cylinders?
Would there be room for a super charger?
This company mounts both the turbos under the car http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/ls1/us_gto.htm (http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/ls1/us_gto.htm)
And there is always remote mounting the turbo charger:
http://www.ststurbo.com/industry_experts (http://www.ststurbo.com/industry_experts)
Which mount it at the rear of the vehicle :)
Anyway, if you get this project underway get some piccies up of your progress, would be nice to follow what your doing.
J
Wouldn\'t the lag be monumental if remote mounted ???
Shaun
Their systems are designed to be mounted at the back and are no more laggy than front mounted turbos, however if you were to put them at the front of the car they do not perform as well: I think their actual turbo\'s (housings etc..) are designed for this purpose.
Theres plenty of articles on the web about them
http://www.popularhotrodding.com/tech/0411sc_sts/ (http://www.popularhotrodding.com/tech/0411sc_sts/)
Quite innovative - especially since their claims seem valid.
It begs the question of the cooling properties of all that pipework and maybe a massive FMIC is not required to get the intake temps down?
you can buy a centrifugal type supercharger which works like a turbo and flows like a turbo but is turned by the crank. it would be quite big, we fitted one to the tripple FD but have now gone over to turbo although i think if we had perservered it would have worked. It can sit in front of the block. We went for a Vortec but changed to a pro charger.
initially i\'d be happy for 525 lbt and 500 bhp but there is always next year!
so would a stock an LS2 from a GTO be any good.? I assume its the same as an LS2 from a corvette
I know people have used LS2s, but probably more expensive than a LS1 or LS6 - I think they are a more recent engine (2005+)
Check out
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/ (http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/)
They have a forum about conversions.
I *think* you can mix and match things too if you do your research, like using a LS7 cylinder block (7.0L) and various other bits from other models of engine (don\'t quote me on that!)
not all gto,s are ls2 powered some are 5.7 people pay a premium for ls2s when you can get a ls1 to put out more power for less money ,the ls7 blocks are big money so forget them and they are dry sump so the cranks are longer . remember you can stroke a 5.7 to 6.3 with forged pistons and steel rod probably for less money than a ls2,but remember its not all about ccs its got to flow !!
