Title: Lost door keys. Can Mazda cut from chassis no.?
Post by: Doofry on December 22, 2006, 07:41:48 PM
Hi guys. Decided to bring my RX back to life. As it\'s been lying for the best part of a year I\'ve lost the door keys. I do still have the idnition key, but no door key. I phoned Mazda, Paisley and the parts guy on the phone said it shouldn\'t be a problem getting one cut from the chassis no. if I brought down the logbook and ID, might take a couple of days since it\'s an import but it should be ok. When I appeared at Mazda parts guys no.2 says ".....whhhhhhhhhh.....hmmmmmmm.....nahhh. I don\'t think we\'ll be able to code a key for you, tried getting one for an imported MX5 and had no joy. I\'ll email the logbook to Mazda Holland and see but I don\'t think so". Anyway not heard anything back and seemed pretty un helpfull. Has anyone else had to do this before? I\'ve done it for Fords and Citreons no probs before.

Another option is maybe getting the AA (I believe they open cars shen you loose your keys right?) to open the car, dismantle the lock and get the number off it (not sure if door locks have the serial on them, I\'m sure it\'s usually the ignition and thats a different key) and see if Mazda can cut a key from that?

Or burst the door lock (sob!) and get a new set of locks...hope not.

All this so I can get it moveable to go on a flat bed to the neared RX specialist (Which I believe if \'the Garage\' for us in Scotland?

Any thoughts? Anyone used the AA for this before?

For the 323 my local Mazda could sell me a replacement lock which fitted my existing key. Mind you, I had the key number.

But I think they can get the key number from the VIN ?

Ask a auto locksmith to Take the door lock out, or glovebox lock,(if its the same key)
Ask him niclely to make you a key.

I broke the only key I had for my Rex.... it seemed to operate both ignition and doors? Have your locks been changed?

I had no luck trying to get hold of new cut key from Mazda in Scotland...very unhelpful but got a guy in Asda in Parkhead to cut a new one from my broken key, actually this is  no help at all is it? You have lost yours...

Good to get another Scottish Rex back on the road tho!!!

Craig...yeah possibley the door or ignition lock(s) has been changed (I\'m guessing the ignition maybe as its the odd one out) is still worth a shot though with Mazda I thought as I have an ignition key.

Off topic but I love the look of your Rex. If I get mine back on the road I\'ve been planning on the fixed headlights like yours and a new spec front bumper....looks very nice. Don\'t suppose you have a nice pic of yours. Love the yellow too. Driving a bright yellow Celica at the moment and has grown on me (gonna sell it though to pay for stuff for the Rex as I\'ve got a Scoobie siting in liverpool docks just now as a second, slightly more sensible runaround than the Rex lol).
