Title: Tips on shaping carbon fibre please?
Post by: scooby_si on December 14, 2003, 06:55:41 PM
Right got a couple of small pieces missing from my soon to be cars rear spoiler, which is no longer made so no replacments, but i have or am going to be supplied with some carbon fibre to shape to offending missing bits & stick in there to look schweeet!
I\'m told it\'s just a case of hacksawing to a reasonable size then filing to fit pucker. Is it this simple &/or any tips greatfully received.... (http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/otn/wink/thumb.gif)
Also wots guna be best way to stick bits on: just sum half decent double sided tape or art there further cunning plans? (http://www.computerpannen.com/cwm/contrib/Bizkit/peoples.gif)
Cheers peaps

Surely its supposed to be made in the shape you need.  I would think just cutting a sheet apart might look a bit rough.

well it\'s a long piece of carbon fibre i\'m getting so i should have plenty of trial & error bits (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/sarge/Yikes_anim.gif) but no not possible to have it made to fit unless you know sumwhere that can do this?
I did wonder about how solid the CF could be cut but presume roughness could be filed/sanded easy enough to a smooth & properly shaped finish but hey as you can tell i no sweet FA (http://smilies.crowd9.com/otn/ez/ezpi_wink1.gif) lol
So anyone with any experiance of shaping CF? or any other cunning plans/options woodnt hurt(http://smilies.crowd9.com/cwm/cwm/rotate.gif)

Thats a really small bit missing to go to the hassle of chopping up a big bit of carbon fibre to fill. Why not shape a piece to fill the hole out of fibre glass and make on for the other side and then get cheap carbon fibre film and stick it over the top. If you want to to look like pukka carbon, spray a couple of layers of laquer over it (thats what usually gives away film ;) )

Si

I\'d use a sign material \'dibond\' - I\'ve got some offcuts you can play with so it\'s got to be worth a go.
