Right all my RX is in the body shop to get a respray. Its a pearl white at the moment that no body shop has been able to match so im gonna get the whole car resprayed something new. Had several ideas that have gone out the window. Found a nice Cobolt Blue but it didnt go with the alloys. Posted a couple ideas below. Want it to look classy and unique witout looking tacky if that makes sense.

Kind of going along these lines with this idea

This is the body shops idea, they seam to think that the yellow bits would look great silver but im not sure at all. The top pic is my car so I borrowed a couple of pics of RAW\'s car , cos he takes better pics than me :)
Right any ideas anyone???
I like that idea of the yellow/gold body with the black roof and boot. But in my opinion i wouldnt have any black on the front bumper and have all the bonnet black, instead of that point thing, hope that makes sense:p
Dont do two tone. At least not like that.
If you really must, get it sprayed one colour and use vinyl so at least it can come off again.
Id go for a manufactures paint and not something mixed especially. Clio Cup blue is similar to the RE-A cars. Think its called championship blue but not sure on that.

If it\'s the old French racing blue - same colour as the racing cars of the thirties, and quite a lot of Alpines - it\'s fairly easy to match that to a packet of Gauloises :D.
Nope, I\'m not kidding - legend has it that that\'s how they checked the colour at the Bugatti factory.
Sorry to hear the cvracked bumper has lead to a full re-spray bud :( Thats the same position i was in last year when I hit that rabbit and the bodyshop couldnt match my pearl. Still, once the cars done it\'ll be the better for it!!!:)
Quite like the bright gold idea. Ive seen a House of Kolor or similar chrome effect paint, and if you could get the gold to look like that...mad!
Failing that the RE-A blue is very nice, and as the lads say its nigh on the same as existing UK paint codes (and therefore alot cheaper, easier to apply and easy to match!)
Good luck bud!
Chris
Well im gonna do some more photo shoping tonite when I get in ill post what I come up with later on tonite.
Its hard coming up with a really good idea\'s when ive got Chrisis and Ians to compete against :) . Have you seen your car in Fast Car today chris???

dont do this idea as this is what i was planning :reallymad
Thats no good. was keen on the RE blue because ive never seen any painted like that in this country. Has anyone got anyother ideas???
Thats the thing with pearls candy\'s etc etc i scratch an ya feked!!well most of the time,i did my supe in Daytona blue pearl nice colour,i did put a bit gold pearl in the laquer, but all in all it would look great on a rex:)
Be adventurous like me :)
BTW its all paint and all my own work.

The blue is almost the same is what I had origionally settled on. Cobolt Candy Pearl. Changed my mind because I found an RX7 painted in it allready , with gold alloys as well and it just looked wrong.
The direction im kind of thinking now is possibly yellow and black with some black graphics .
Want some thing eye catching but not tacky if that makes sense. Ill post my new ideas in the next couple of days

Oh i like that.
Top tip is soften the edges of the graphics with another dark colour like gun metal and tip the spikes or it will look like stickers.

Ooh Fastcar, my mate mentioned something bout that. I\'ll get a copy :)
The yellow is looking good fella. The only problem, from my own trawling through all of the yellow colour charts when I wanted mine re-sprayed in yellow, is you have to go for something like House of Kolor to get a really interesting colour:yes
Graphics look good too!

This colour is on its way to our shores as we speak iirc :2Confused. (not mine)
Go black and gold or something like it not a bright yellow.
Before i decided to sell my rx7 i was looking at different candy purple colours, the most striking one was this colour below, would look awesome on a FD :Santa
Yea heres that same car...class colour!the problem with a candy though is that you could find yourself in the same position at some point in the future,as regards to not being able to match it,i know of people who have had candy paint only to find when they want to change something on the body or even get a scratch or small repair they are looking at a full respray as nobody can match it or nobody will try.

fantastic!!!:D
Well im gonna have to have a bit more of a think about it. Ill have a look at the colour charts when I get bck home. Im at my parents at Inverness at the moment for Christmas. Obviously cant post many ideas from here as my big computer is back at home. Will also hopefully have photo shop to use when I get back as I think ive reached the limitations of the version of Coral draw that im using.
Pretty sure ill not be painting it in the blue if there are going to be others that colour knocking around. Also if I were to do it with the Gulf Blue with the orange stripe think it would look like a GT40 look alike.
Will post some new ideas when I get bck.
Happy Christmas :)
House of Kolor now do kandy base coats, rather than the original silver/gold etc base and then a coloured laquer! So as long as you have a good sprayer and they take note of numbers of coats and pressure they used for spraying, you should get a perfect match!
There are lots of Places that sells Candy Dye.
This is my Fav at the mo http://www.chromepaint.com/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=3&osCsid=05b569699ef146ccf9b73921c7498e27
I have used there Chrome paint a bit and is HARD WORK!! it goes realy Cloudy if your not carfull, but there Dyes are good. That Purple would be easy to do its just a Black Base and a Dark Purple Candy, the Trick is to do a few spray out cards forst to get your Level then paint in full lenths rather than Panels.
I\'d say don\'t put anything in the Clear as it won\'t be as deep, You should use a Binder to hold the Candy or at least flat it back and reclear.
Quote from: jetpilotyou should get a perfect match!
LOL, I Use alot of candy and i bet i could\'nt match the Colour 5 minutes after its been painted :)
Its realy hard, 1psi diffrence at the Cap or the angle you hold the gun will change the colour.
The types of paint that are easy to repaint panels is stuff like Chromaflare and Multi flip bases, Candy/Glitter/Chrome are a Royal Pain in the rear to match and it would be easyer and a better job to do the lot again in alot of cases. (Thats why most Painters get paranoid about Panel beaters Building there Jobs up ;))
wow that paint looks amazing.. so`s the price tag :P, gunna order a bit and give it a whirl :D
Is that using the Kandy base coats Chris, or using the silver/gold base and then coloured laquer!
Is that using the original Kandy way, silver/gold base etc then coloured laquer or the new base coats Chris?
http://www.houseofkolor.com/hok/products/shimrin.jsp
In my eyes i would only ever go candy if i had the car garaged and only let it out on sunny weekends,i dont think i could live with it as i use the rex quite a bit and park it etc,if you paid for a nice candy paintjob and something happend stone chips...scratch...dint... etc etc then your nice paintjob goes tits up very quick, imho you looking at another respray.and like chris said you could paint the same colour 5 mins later and it would look different, even pearls are a pita to match at times.
Quote from: interloper393wow that paint looks amazing.. so`s the price tag :P, gunna order a bit and give it a whirl :D
Which one do you mean?
The Chrome Paint is a Bugger to put on, How i do it is Paint the job all Base and clear Jet Black (so its got as much depth as poss) then after thats all been cured etc apply the Chrome in light Dust coats, then Clear that. If you want is Coloured then you Apply your Candy Dye over that and clear again. Polish and thats job done.
Last one i did was a Bike and just that one job took the best part of a week to do. I havn\'t done a Full car in it (i\'ve just done sections for Graphics) but i belive its too refective so is illigal on the roads in the UK.
Quote from: jetpilotIs that using the original Kandy way, silver/gold base etc then coloured laquer or the new base coats Chris?
http://www.houseofkolor.com/hok/products/shimrin.jsp
What we talking about? If you mean the Candy Colours you can change the Colour Dramaticly by changing the Base colour.
i.e. That Purple will be over Black (if you catch the Flip of the colour it goes Dark almost Black) you can make it go the other way by putting it over White, Solid colours give the most Dramatic effects but if you look at the colour it does\'nt look Metalic. The Problem is when you put candy over a Met Colour it takes the Shine (if you like) off the Aluminium particals (you don\'t see them as much) a trick is to Put Glitter over the Base colour then Clear it so the Met is realy Bright (that works well).
Thing is with Custom paint jobs its realy Time Consuming, In a run of the Mill bodyshop it would cost SERIOUS money.
Alot of the Custom Colurs are realy old, 70% of them are Solvent and where designed years ago and they just mix them together to find new colours to paint cars in. I know the Chrome paint was developed in the 80\'s to paint Plastics for stuff like Phones etc.
Quote from: GrizzlyWhich one do you mean?
That coloured chrome look! but 35 for 100ml of it? wow thats alot of cash for a whole car lol
well i painted a full Motor bike fairling in two tenths of a litre, it goes along way.
But also saying that its not cheap by any means.
can it be mixed with regular thinners and hardners and applyed with a normal gun?
Right I was looking for ideas last night and came accross TRIAL Demo Car ( Pic attached ). Gonna have a play around and see if I can do a photoshop of it on to my RX. Its the first thing that has really jumped out and screamed at me. Dont like supras but this one is SWEET.
Well i use a Sata Water base gun to put it on (Its got a big fan and it does\'nt hard line like a Devilbiss etc)
Depending on what make Chrome you use some like to be Suspended in Binder some you just put in the gun and away you go. With this sort of thing ALWAYS get a data sheet with it. I had alll sorts of problems with the Chrome at first becouse it has too be 150% dry or it will bite you in the Rear bad style, you also can\'t play with it (no tacking or nibing between coats).
I would say its defo not something to try in your garage at home (You could do small stuff but not a Car).
A lad i know has spent the last two years trying to get me to Paint his FD in Black Chrome. I would imagen it would look good but i realy don\'t like the idea.
id go for the lambo light blue. lovely metalic and fleck in it. and its cheap

what is that gold chrome paint in the first picture. Looks really nice.
Ive only ever seen one proper candy job on an eo that was in banzai\'s front page. Ive probably seen about 12-15 jobs and most have some element of patchyness. Its just too hard to get a perfect job.
Would seem that if you want a completly even job you need to do it in either drop coats (from far back so the paint almost falls on the car rather than sprayed at it, although this does produce a lot of waste). Or you\'d need a gun with the fan as wide as the car is high, othewise it just streaks or patches.
Right , ive got to make a decision. Ive decided on two colours both on TVR\'s. Ive attached them , let me know what you think. I shouldent have gone on the TVR website they have way to many nice colours to choose from.

Yeh it does go Patchy if you use dodgy Dye or mess up the met Base (if you use a Bright silver for example), i used to have a problem with it getting lines in and Dark edges round doors etc (thats just becouse i did\'nt apply it evenly enough)
Don\'t get me wrong candy Dye is REALY!! hard to use properly. There is a way to put it on, for a start all the Panels etc on the car, go in full lenths, try to keep it VERY!! even, Move the Gun back away from the job and put it on in lots of thin coats (easyer to build up),Dont try and paint the Door jams at the same time (you get a dark line round the edge where you duble head each coat) and most important don\'t rush it (you will be in S**t if you run it).
But i find the Multi flip colours tend to look realy dodgy close up (the hole lot, Grainy/Patchy etc) when you see alot of these "show cars" they look realy poor, allot are done for Magazines and are not suposed to be seen too close, I\'ve yet to see one of these max power cars with all the GRP kit last more than one season before the paint starts sink into all the filler on it or the Paint chips off all that Fiber glass.
Nar, I\'m a Painter and my car is Externaly Stock, Ok it may look like 100 others but i don\'t enjoy spending Hours making my car look better than it left the show room only for it to get a stone chip driving it home?? (i\'d be Gutted) My cars getting painted then its getting Driven.... HARD!!!
Quote from: richard cashwhat is that gold chrome paint in the first picture. Looks really nice.
There is Only "Chrome" you change its colour by applying Candy Dye over it, With a bit of messing you can start doing stuff like Ghosting and effects just by masking bits up so theres diffrent amounts of dye on diffrent bits.
I have to admit the Chrome with Black dye looks well (I belive the Burnout Fd was done in it but darker)
2nd one for me, first one is a little too similar to the classic Scooby Imprezza colour!
Both those colours 1st half of car purple seconda half blue! Because there are already a few purples flying about and a couple in that blue.
Popped through to the bodyshop today, things are moving along nicely now. Took some pics, looks a bit scarey at the moment. Having everything smoothed off. Smooth n curvey :-)

I am liking that blended skirt/wing, looks cool, how about the back? Getting all that done too?
Yeah the bumper is gonna be blended into the rear wings. Although im trying to get hold of some charge speed wide rear arches to go on it but im not sure that they will arrive before the spraying process has begun. The side skirts are gonna be blended in further forwards as well so it should end up looking pretty sleek.
Looking good fella!!!
Reminds me of a car I know ;)
Quick tip from my bodyshop tho, the standar rear bumper is foam filled and very squishy when pushed. If you blend this bumper into the arches etc then the filler will crack on the lightest impact (just pushing will do this). Its also a good idea to smooth the bodywork to meet the plastics, as oppose to flushing the plastics into the body. If you leave a shut line you are still protected against mis-haps!
Chris
Hi Chris
Yeah the body shop have said the same thing to me, gonna be leaving shut lines between the bumper and rear body work and between the front arches and the sideskirts.
Just trying to get the colour sorted out now. Got to go through to the body shop tomorrow to have a look at some samples.
Not gonna be leaving it spoiler less , ive got a large cargon fiber spoiler coming.
Have been trying to find some wide rear arches for it but no one has got any in stock and my budget is getting pretty tight as it is.
When its finished think we should all meet up at a cruise or something.
Ill take some more pics tomorrow and post them up .

Defo mate!
Will have to hurry before Ian gets himself off to more interesting climates tho!
I should be sporting some new wheels by then too, first job of this seasons mods and all that :)
Chris
Well I need to have a rethink on the colour cos cant find a match for the TVR Laser Blue .
Yeah we\'ll need to meet before Ian leaves.
Dont surpose you have any ideas chris
Of all the people I asked only my ex girlfriend said she prefered the purple. I asked her if it would get me bck in her knickers and she said no. So I dont have a lot of motivation to paint the car purple :) .

Youre bodyshop should give you a hand with colours fella, just get the colour charts out. Failing that pop to a local paint supplier to look at their charts. You should find a match that way, it helped me for a basecoat.
Oh, and dont get me started on bloody ex\'s and cars, lol!
Chris
Think im just gonna ask them to find as close a match as possible and go from there.
TVR colours seam really hard to match , came across that sprectaflair today, very nice but a bit out of my price range.
If my ex had said it would it would be purple allready :Giggle

How would you spray the door jams then with candy. The last candy job i tried was a purple 2K paint ontop of a silver met base. It was even on the spoiler and small bits but along the car it was just patch all over really. I had to change colours and start over with a normal pearl. Would you suggest using a closer base to the candy (i.e use a purple or blue base) and whats best to use out of 2K candy (basically lacquer with the dye in it) or the polyester/acrylic basecoat stuff. Also, do you thin it down much more than normal. I have heard that some US shops thin it to as much as 80% when applying the coats.
Grizz, have you got an email that we could discuss this further
cheers
rich
Right a choice has been made and the paint has been ordered. Theres no going bck now. The sample pic doesent appear as deep as what it really is. Its very very deep and glossy but the pic doesent show it very well.

Hi mate, hope the cars treating you well i saw the pics of the front bumper a while back ouch!
Good to see your investing time and money into a car that i greatly miss, i am sure this will be a show stopper once finished may be a cover car.
i will be watching with great interest.
Dont worry im going to be getting the alloys sorted out as well. Ill either be selling them or getting them a different colour or possibly pollished.
Hasent been polished yet either and that was indoors so the colour wasent showing up well in the pictures. Ones its all buffed up it should look mint.
Looking very nice!
That looks stunning!
Good work :D
Any more updates my man?
Be nice to see the progress:Thumbs-up

Hi Chris
Bit of a set back. The garage left the filler to dry for two weeks before they painted it but because it was so cold the filler hadent completly dried. So the paint has gone blotchy where they had put filler on it :( . The garage are gonna be redoing the whole car in the next week. So it should be ready for me coming back from my hollidays on the 4th march , fingers crossed. Got the half cage to go in as well which I just started rubbing down last nite ready to be painted.
Niall
Missed this thread, that colour looks incredible !!
Bet in the summer it will look awesome !!!
Good choice there mate.
THANK GOD you did not go down the route of stupid graphics all over the car. I think that looks like a really really nice blue, almost like the lambo blue actually...

Still, at least they are going to re-do it all. May have to go in the oven for a bit.
Roll on the sunny spring weather (or am I being optomistic);)

Hiya fella,
Yep, desperate to go to Donny, aint missed it in about 5 years!
Im looking at putting a stand together too. I normally go with the 200+ club, but last year they put us on the dusty / grassed area and it was crap. They put private stands on hard standing.
Do you fancy joining me, and seeing if anyone else wants an unofficial stand?
Chris:)

Howdy bud,
They are the 7th and 8th of April (which could well be the easter weekend???)
Youre more than welcome to come along!:wave
Anyone else fancy, or should I start a thread?
Chris

Im allready signed up to go with my local club other wise id be well up for going on your stand. What other shows are you planning on going to? Think id rather be parked next to your RX than a bunch of NOVA\'s and SAXO\'S.

Hi bud,
Gonna do all the major shows as long as she keeps motoring without probs all summer!
Think Japfest is the next after Donny.
If you get bored of your stand just head on over to mine during Donny! We did a fair bit of car moving last year and it didnt seem to bother anyone!

i usually go to a lot of shows with autophoria.org if your ever stuck for tickets or stand passes you are welcome to join us.
I managed to fix my car last night, pipe was split on the map sensor so it was stupidly rough and rich so it looks like i will be on the road for that weekend.
probably best start a new thread though
Very nice colour, i look forward to the finnished pictures.
I think the alloys look well....keep them, the really complement that colour.
Hi All
Sorry for the delay. Car is almost finished, had a major delay at the body shop due to a bad batch of paint. So its now a different colour. No pics yet, will be finished on monday. Dont want to let the cat out of the bag yet so I wont be posting pics untill after Donny next week end.
See you all there
It looks stunning by the way :)

I was gonna make comment about the girl attached to the wing mirror but just incase she\'s your girlfriend I won\'t. Did you pick her up on the way? looks like she got too close and has been trying to \'get off\' since.
Looks bloody gorgeous matey, with the gold wheels and red seats it\'s puuuurrrfect!
Looking good...those Volks look small for some reason though :o
& that chick is wearing way to much clothing ;)

yeah there no suposed to wear underwhere.. god sake!! :2Rolleyes
No shes not my girls friend ( yet ) :) . Know what you mean bout the alloys looking a bit small. They are 18\'s though and ive had enought clearance problems with them let alone going up a size.
We had three lasses with us not wearing much clothes. Took to of them out round the track. Think I might have scared them a little.
Ill tell them next time that they have to wear no underwear for the photo shoot :)
You could have given that lass a hand to climb over the car mate! Looks like she needs a ladder or something, lol
Car looking good tho fella! Just a shame about all the bloody dust at Donny!
