As the question says what is the limit for the series3 1st gen gearbox. Investigating the engine project and maybe the low power rx8 engine may be on the cards :wiggle :wiggle :wiggle
Cheers

Why not use the rx8 box? :mmmm

its got to be easier dont think the 12a would last plus most have done at least 50k

Well i have 3 boxs now :D and im not actually sure how hard a rx8 box is to pickup on the cheap !
Shaun
!st Gen box equals 3 laps x 4.12 km..:2eek ,1st Gen box equals one ROTORSTOCK and so on heheheheheh.I have used two in 2000 miles !!!!!! normal street driving...:evillaugh :cool A lil more than stock power you have to upgrade,IMO.:Typing
Reading up on rx7club it\'ll probably be a 13b egi on a carb if i go that way and then i\'ll have to run with a better box.
Just wish i had the funds to copy carl and go 20b !!! lol
Shaun
With about 350 rwhp, a perfect egi box did 7 1/4 mile runs, then went the same way as the previous 3 did.The teeth strip off of the input gear,or off 3rd gear while under load.I believe the box is no stronger than the 1st gen boxes.
Bought the rx8 box I now use on E-bay,£400.Definitely the best way to go.
I have used and abused by gearbox all season. Did one oil change midway through and no teeth or bits fell out. Its going back in next week with new oil again. However, it will probably destroy its self at the next event. But I have 2 spares. When they are gone I will simply go RX8 or a ford unit with quaiffe or tran x internals. But bear in mind mine is put through a bit more punishment
Does the rx8 box actually bolt up to the 12a or 13b engine ? Theres definately lots of options :D
Shaun
All Mazda rotary boxes bolt up to all engines, just need to take a look at flywheel diameter, but if you use a lightwheight it doesn\'t matter anyway: just use the flywheel that suits the box.
But RX-8 engines aren\'t that strong; HP is less destructive on driveline parts than torque, and they do\'t have that much torque, do they? I\'m also not so sure about RX-8 boxes. As far as I know (haven\'t tested myself) TII boxes are stronger than FD\'s (weak synchro\'s on 3rd and 5th) and I wonder what\'s the RX-8 box is like.
It seems the best bet would be a TII box, it\'ll be cheaper than a RX8 and strong enough.
BTW: EGI boxes aren\'t much stronger than first gens at all. Esp S3 (84-85) are about the same strength as EGI ones.
howzit :)
first generation boxes are strong if you can get a 12A turbo gearbox they even stronger, 12A turbo boxes have been used behind many a series 4/5 13B turbo engines in a first generation car with thrashing and i mean thrashing and about 200-300 hp they will last about 6 months
just start to wine abit, after burnouts and flat changing gears
a series 4/5 13b 6-port gearbox is similar if not the same as a 12A turbo box, stronger than series 1/2/3 non turbo box
you can tell a turbo gearbox as they have a snorkel type thing on the righthandside of the bell housing as normally aspirated dont, just the same vent/snorkel as on the series 4/5 turbo box
so if you can pick up series 4/5 6-port (non turbo)gearboxes cheap and dont mind changing them after awhile it would be the cheapest option
btw over fill the gearbox through the gearstick hole by about 1/2 to 1 litre of oil
hope helps
later

if you need pics of difference between turbo and non turbo gearboxes let me know and will get some pics up
Cheers, i think im sticking with the 12a for a while. Just looking at my options at the min. with my rebuild project being scrapped im looking at the lpg option for the time being !

my gearbox can be a little stiff untill it warms up, will overfilling it help with this or is it just for protection?
thanks
Mark
howzit :)
no wont help with that, overfilling is only really for racing ie circuits drag racing, does help on the street
you could try castrol syntrax gear oil, dont know price over here but its amazing stuff, helps with gear engagement

Thanks its fine after 2 - 3 changes so ive never really worried about it!

I think mines ok, (cant really tell cos its SO noisy), but I would like a taller top gear. Was thinking TII, but they dont go straight on aparently. Would EGI have longer 5th?
if you need taller gearing you really want to be looking at changing the diff ratio, most gearboxes will have very similar top gear ratio\'s changes are made by swapping out the ring and pinion.
The new derek 7.7 in the 1/4mile the fastest 12-A in the world

I have a GSL LSD, can it be modded in such a way? Also wouldn\'t that make 1st a bit steep too? I\'m just after relaxed cruising & more mpg
howzit :)
re diff, depends what you want either top end or fast of the mark but loose some top end,
you can get 3.5,3.6,3.7,3.9,4.1,4.4 diff ratios are common there are others but they are usually aftermarket or expensive
if you have a bridgeport or jport you would want a 4.1 or 4.4
note you can use all gen 1, series 1,2,3 crownwheel pinions but the differentials are different ie series 1/2 are 24 spline axles and series 3 are 26 spline axles, you can change the side gears in the differential to suit your axles :)
series 4/5 turbo gearbox into gen 1 series 2/3 all you have to do is fit series 4/5 turbo flywheel clutch starter, make gearbox mount, make driveshaft with s 4/5 input yoke your away, extras on series 1 you have to modify gearstick housing forward and cut abit of the floor :)
hope helps

I guess I\'ll stick to the 12A or EGI then!
