Title: line lock
Post by: D1 WTF on December 19, 2006, 02:13:01 AM
where can i get it from and how much does it cost?
how does it work, is there a button you press and hold, or what?

is there any damage this can cause (not including tyres)?
could it put too much pressure on dif, causeing premiture death etc?

i would use it for strip, and maybe, the occasional bit of showing off.

there are two types.....one electrical, one mechanical. The mechanical type are nothing but a stop that interrupts the brake line and needs to be plumbed into the place on the dash or in the footwell where you want it to sit.
An electrical one means the actual lock only can be hidden away, and a switch wired up to the gearshifter or dash etc.
I prefer the electrical one.....its neater to install and your less likely to knock it whilst your driving!

JAMAR make mechanical line locs...but i dunno where to get them from over here....

I have a hurst roll control line lock which comes with a solanoid that you just plumb into your fron brake line as it leaves the master cylinder and before the abs unit (before its split into 2 for left and right)). You then have a simple electrical connection to a switch in the cabin (push an hold type).  To use push the brake pedal, hold the switch, the solanoid then holds the pressure in the front brake lines by shutting the solanoid, you can then release the pedal, allowing you to smoke the back wheels while the fronts are locked, just release the button and the front brakes release and away you go.

No damage to anything really as long as you are sensible using it.

it puts strain on ALL transmission components. Engine will be fine unless it gets damaged for another reason (wear, apex seal goes etc). You can brake transmission mountings, break props, snap half shafts, **** the diff, or just end up massively wearing it (loads of side float etc). You might do this if you get silly. Just like dragging your car, you might break it if you rag it too much or kill it from cold. Theres no fool-proof way of preventing damage occurring.

all of the above could also occure by just wheelspinning your car without a line lock,  i would say the line is better for your car if your gonna burnout the tyres as you can engage things more gently rather than just dumping the clutch.
