Title: My Fd sideways at the roundabout
Post by: samfc3s on December 11, 2003, 01:22:02 PM
Startred drivin my FD yesterday after i got the insurance and MOT all sorted and first time i drove it was pretty scary, when i approach the round about at about 20+mph and turn, then my back just came out n sideways??glad that i been to couple of drift days practise long time ago n so i apply the opposite lock and bring the car back on the road;) , pretty scary tho glad is at midnite so not many cars on road. So is this mean i need to change my crappy japanese tyres???or is this nature of the FD?
i think i can use those tyres for drift day now.....

i had the same kind of experience in  the wet at a roundabaout on jap rubber... mostly caused by too much go juice via a heavy right foot.

Haven\'t had any problems on the same tyres since so much of it is down to understanding the car a little better.

Probably down to the fact that, at 23 you just haven\'t gotten enough miles in with high performance cars to understand how to approach things. It tqakes a few 100k to settle in properly

The FD can produce 8+PSI boost at very low RPM. Drive it in the wet like you would a shopping trolley and sideways it will go.

If you really want hairy, try my Westfield on a slippery road.

Had a smilar experience booting it out of a roundabout in the wet. Too much power, not enough experience and c**p Jap tyres. Fishtailed and then span. Usually one of the busiest roads in town but the god\'s were smiling that day and it was clear.... phew... learnt a harsh lesson and thankfully the FD survived despite coming to rest about a foot away from a tree. Nobody told me the boot space was to store spare underwear... :rollin

either braking to hard, should not be on the brakes in the corner.

You might also want to get the tracking and wheel alignment checked. My FD was very twitchy when I first got her but after a bit of tweaking at Blandford tyres (using lots of rather cool lazer technology) she became a different car and felt far better and sure-footed. Cost me £60.

Mine will only step out if i give it some heavy right foot and thats on skinny 205/50 16s tyres, mind you i am running pretty low boost aparently, 7psi primary and 5psi secondry, i thought that was normal but maybe not then...

You have a 2 way LSD - cool!  I want one of those :D

They are supposed to make you go sideways when coming off the throttle too so that might explain why it happened.

In which case you will have no problems loading up an FD, setting the track to wet and practising entering a corner on the brakes with

a) stock car
b) car with very stiff LSD (non-torsens can and will lock under braking)

And see what happens. GT3 is accurate enough that you can play with car setup and get close to real world results with patience.

Aside: Trail braking in the wet is a very aquired art and one I do not have. I remember at le mans in 1994 watching JJ Lehto in the maclaren coming up to the esses. Brakes a glowing (in pouring rain) the inside front would stop rotating for about 1/4 second before he turned in. At the time he was lapping some 11 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

sam

there\'s your answer then
RX7 is FR car in Gran Turismo terms (front engine / rear drive) which is how cars are supposed to be. Problem is that 30 years ago manufacturers found out it was cheaper to build FF cars instead, so most people have grown up driving FWD cars, like hot hatches etc. Problem is they handle completely differently and you can get away with alot more in a FWD car, such screaming into a roundabout, slamming on the anchors and torque steering through it.
The best way to learn how to drive a RWD car is to learn how to ride a motorbike, as the rules are the same. It\'s all about weight distribution and centre of gravity, as you brake all the weight goes forward, when you need it at the back. Brake in a straight line well before the roundabout and then power through it using smooth progressive motion with both gas and steering. Thats both the fastest and safest way.

QuoteGT3 is accurate enough that you can play with car setup and get close to real world results with patience.

Definately, you learn very quickly that braking mid corner on a FR is not a good idea:)  and benefits of left foot braking, etc..

Not a real world substitute of course but helps build a little knowledge, which is always a good thing.

Now, if only my RX was the same spec as my GT3 one....:D

As 99% of the FD\'s here come from Japan (shipped over), they have japanese tyres on them.

Japanese tyres are rubbish, or rather they just dont work well on UK roads.

and as mr big mouth said, yesterday at brands off the straight into padock 100mph very low formula r\'s on rear had had several scary moments when 2x 360 degrees and into the beach at paddock bend. ripped side skirts off but no damge as such. Note to self, must get new wet tyres. Nice set of the new dunlop sport. And I was braking to hard, slaps that forehead.

I was talking rd legal race tyres not road tyres.
John Yorke and James Baring was with us yesterday, the instructor came over and chatted, took me over the the tyre guy there, apparently follows the rarri and porker clubs to varrious venues, at there request and between the 2 of them edumacateded me on tyres. Left the notes at home, will post them but basically all the stripped out rarris and pokers yesterday (some serious kit) where all using the new dunlop race super sport tyres, great in wet and very good in dry, apparently superseeding the forumlar r\'s myself and several other guys on here using and for dry if you want or can have 2 sets Mich pilots, but crap in wet.
Came accross with some interesting points and gave me a conversion guide from mich, what tyres on what rims how to upgrade in size etc.

Sorry bit of a thread highjack. Sorry.

The trick is to quickly learn that the throttle is not an on/off switch and that you can move forwards without flooring it   ;) :D

I\'ve still got the Jap tyres on mine, and in heavy rain, booting it will cause it to try and drift sligtly to the right, but moving steadilly off and round corners/roundabouts, there\'s no trouble.

Your lucky.  I finally had my new tyres fitted today :)

Booting mine on Jap tyres it would still wheelspin at about 80 if it was wet

Having said that, these KU15\'s I have look pretty evil so who know what the wet grip will be like.  I havnt put the wheels on yet.

Agreed there.

I\'m hoping to still have mine on by the time I do my 1st track day in the FD3.  Nothing teaches you the handling capabilities of the car better than having poor gripping tyres on - learn the limits that way then put grippy rubber on.

This is more so for me who prefers grip driving to drift driving on the track.

Lee, try and put quite a few easy road miles on the tyres before you take them on track - you will find they hold up much better.  Newly fitted rubber + trackday = instant requirement for new boots

i have read that jap ruber aint the only reason jap cars often handle badly & due in part to the geometry/alignment so my question is- is it worth getting the 4 wheel alignment sorted b4 going round bruntingthorpe & killing Jap rubber & then putting nice new F1s on or wood it then need re-adjusting after new boots put on (ie trying to skimp & not do it twice but equally wood prefer to learn limits on how the car will be set up post dead Jap rubber....(http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/otn/happy/auto.gif))

When you say Jap tyres are rubbish, which ones exactly do you mean?

Bridgestone & Yokohama are Japanese and both make excellent tyres.
Although my personal preference is the Good Year F1 Eagle for it\'s exceptional wet weather traction.
Title: My Fd sideways at the roundabout
Post by: Gman on December 14, 2003, 05:31:04 PM
Its not the make of tyre thats the issue its the grade of rubber.  Jap roads are different to UK roads so the rubber is different.

Yeah we dont mean Japanese companies.  Yoko\'s and Bridgestone etc make some awesome tyres.  We mean the actual tyres they use in Japan.

I had a Porsche Boxster up until last month and got me a lovely black type X RX over from Japan. Had it kitted with brand new red leather and this thing looks like out of the showroom new...Lovely kit on it and it\'s my new baby (dont tell da missus).

The handling is rock, easily as good as the Porsche and very predictable if you brake and apply the power correctly and drive it smoothly. Fantastic machine !!

Laters,
