Title: Possible Clutch problems
Post by: G@NDY on December 08, 2006, 11:16:19 AM
Trying to help a friend out here, with his FD problem.

He only bought the car yesterday:o , and driving up from down south to grantham with no problems at all. Then from grantham to birmingham he stopped at some lights, went to pull away and nothing !!?? engine just revved, he took it to 7k revs and it started rolling. Pulled up at the side and called mister AA. He said that it was the clutch.
Other thing to mention is that when the bonnet was lifted it was steaming/smoke but it was too windy to tell which side of the engine.

My thoughts are that it has lost clutch fluid, maybe split pipe. This might have led to the smoke, could have been dripping on a hot engine. We have printed off the clutch diagram web stuff and emailed him, he is going to check all that stuff some time today. If nothing is obvious, then it could be a trip to sunny brum for the gandy.

Any other thoughts please
(its a standard 92 FD with 40 kilometers on the clock, imported in 2005)

Thanks Andy:Typing :WaveBye

if its the clutch fluid pipe then it would be permanantly engaged, from reading your post, it sounds like its disengaged.

Did he notice any slipping at all before hand?

Thats the weird thing, no slipping at all.
Would he not be able to get it in gear is its always engaged? Forgot to ask him about that.

Jack it up and open the Instection plate (on the Bottom of the Box)

If the Plate has gone you\'ll be able to see it, Most likly you\'ll get showered in bits of Clutch :)

seems strange that there was no slipping or anything at all, but then if he only bought it yesterday he may not be too sure and also if the car has been sat for a loooong time since it was last used the organic clutch plate may have deteriorated but it seems unusual.

As chris says,  get under and remove the little inspection plate and you will get an idea.

I would back to the dealer if possible to fit a nice new clutch!

Just a Reminder to unlock the Clutch before you Drop the Box.

You Proberly already know but funny watching people scraching there head thinking why is\'nt it coming off?

If you take the Flywheel to Clutch boolts out when you drop the Box you can take the Clutch with it. (Plus if you go back that way you can 100% make sure the Bearing is locked properly)

Strange things happen at times with clutches!

The Ferodo material sometimes becomes totally detached from the center plate ( drive plate) or in extreme cases like one I am trying to work out ATM on an RX-8 the where the center plate inner hub has become totally detached from the outer part.

Yours sounds like the material was close to worn out then it broke up hence the smoke etc, but whatever it is the box will have to come out.

There is a clutch fault finding section here on the Exedy clutch site.

I\'ve had a problem today which looks similar after my engine was out last week.

When I stopped at the lights on the way in this morning, the lights changed and I went to put the car in first gear and it wouldn\'t go in, after some four or five attempts it got in and off I went.

Then nearer to work I was queuing again for a narrow bridge and when I went to go into first it wouldn\'t go. Eventually it went in but then on releasing the clutch the clutch pedal came up about halfway and only slowly went all the way up as I drove off.

This only happens when stationary - in fact, before the engine came out I had the opposite problem, I could only get into first when stationary, it was very difficult to drop into first when approaching junctions.

Any ideas?

The center plate is quite possibly sticking on the splines, keeping one side of the center plate in contact with the flywheel.

Take the inspection plate off and you should be able to lubricate it.

if your pedal isnt disengaging the clutch it may be your slave or master cylinder or a leaky hydrolic line
