Title: Steering wheel issues
Post by: moosey on December 06, 2006, 04:05:29 AM
Well i\'m hopefully gettting my FD at the end of Dec and I\'ve already bought
a Momo Team steering wheel for it. My trouble is the steering boss/hub adapter.
I bought the wheel on ebay (due to losing out on a couple of ads on the forum,
however I haven\'t been able to find an appropriate boss on there to match
the wheel. All of the ads seem to be for pre-92 Rex\'s (FC\'s I\'m assuming)

The big question I\'m asking really is; does the pre 92 hub fit an FD and if so,
will it fit between my 92 rex and my momo wheel?
I have tried the search function but still can\'t find the answer so any help is
going to be greatly appreciated.

Ive one that is removable if you want to buy it?

I was about to advertise it on the for sale list....but it is a fully billeted steering boss that fits directly on the original boss.

Cheers

Do you mean the steering wheel is removable or the boss?
It\'ll definitely fit a momo wheel too?
Interested, all right, how much do you want?

The steering wheel boss is from Tweeks.

I needed it for ease of access when getting over the roll cage.  It cost just over £210, and is both useful and looks good!

The only reason I am selling it is we are removing the stalks and changing to a weld on version.

Sparco Quick Release Steering Boss Kits

Sparco Quick Release Steering Boss kits for single seater type 3 bolt steering wheels or standard 6 bolt pre-drilled wheels. The Group N version (Photo) is bolted directly to your existing Sparco/MOMO/OMP steering boss kit and then your existing wheel bolts to the upper removable portion. This unit involves no welding, just fixes with the standard fixings and kit supplied. The Group N boss kit also brings the steering wheeel 50mm nearer the driver, please make a note of this additional offset.

So make me an offer....there is one person hiding in the wings that has made me a second offer, but to be honest its the first person to get me cash that gets it ;)

Just to add, this is what it looks like, however it simply bolts to the existing boss.....and yes it is fully removable

what exactly does it attach to?  a normal aftermarket boss?

have you got, or can you get a pic of it fitted?

I bought a boss off of ebay which was suppossed to be for an FC one, I just asked the seller and he said yes. It did fit (I may have just been lucky and the guy gave me the right one), but at the end of the day only cost £15

At the end of the day ask the seller on ebay. If they don\'t know, don\'t buy it.

Take off the original steering wheel and the black section bolts straight to it.

You bolt the gold part to your steering wheel and heh presto you have a removable steering wheel.

I will supply all of the bolts...it is guarranteed to fit...and it is of top quality, you may get lucky on Ebay, but imagine going round a corner and hitting a pot hole and the steering boss snapping....whilst you are imagining this remember you are going at 80mph.

Appreciate the offer AtomicRex but it\'s a little pricey for me.
I could probably get a Momo one for considerably less.
Thanks for the help Gonzo.

Im happy to wait....

I really dont think you will find a cheaper one that will bolt straight to your steering boss.  Unless you like me are happy to lose the stalks then you can use a cheaper weld on.

I\'ve an FD boss that will allow a Momo wheel to be fitted. I\'ve just changed the wheel on mine to a removable type so I can get in with the cage and bucket seat. Was going to ebay it, but you could have it for £15 quid.
It will definatley allow a Momo to be fitted as that is the type of wheel I have. Lovely alcantara one, mmm hairy.

If you already have a boss on your original steering wheel then just drill and tap it, I do at least 3 a week at mx5city and it only takes me 15 mins.

Cool Tony, definitely interested as long as I understand this right,
(Still don\'t have the car so don\'t know how this works)
My car\'s a 92 UK FD, the wheel a Momo Team 300mm
All I have to do is take the standard wheel off, remove hub,
put on boss, put on wheel.
Have I got that right?  Or do do you put the boss onto the hub?

Is there any welding or drilling involved with what I\'m talking about?

Please forgive my ignorance!

Do you have a Paypal account Tony?

No welding or drilling - the item I have bolts to the column via the single centre nut on the end of the column) and then the wheel bolts to the othe end which will accomodate a momo wheel. No welding or drilling.

I\'ve got a bolt on but it is good and sturdy, anyway with my delicate touch I could steer it with a silken thread clutched between forefinger and thumb :D
Have you ever tried the one finger test to gauge how little force you need to steer at speed. On a nice open airfield try a corner at 80mph and only steer with one finger resting on the top of the wheel - guide with the finger but allow the wheel (and the subsequently the tires) to squirm and find their own path. It freaks passengers out to steer a perfect line with a single finger on the wheel. Amazing stuff car dynamics.

Anyway -- paypal: racingmg4sale@yahoo.co.uk  (can I do this as a non member?)

I\'d say if anyone is fitting a cage/race seat in their RX they need a removable wheel. It is bleeding hard getting in with a fixed wheel.

Nice, got any good bits :mmmm
I\'ve spent this evening entangled in ignition wires trying to dismantle the remains of a thatcham category alarm.
I need some new gauges and master switch, ignition swith, starter button, etc to build into a replacment dash panel now.

I think Tweeks were selling off the dash as I use for really cheap!  SPA Micro Dash.

Great not to have any guages....less to go wrong and independent to everything else!!

I am having a Carbon Fibre Dash made to replace the crappy plastic thing.......Gary at Rotaryart will be selling them soon :)
