Title: Sub Box
Post by: GaseJo on December 04, 2006, 06:36:27 PM
Hi all,

A quick question. I am building a sub box for my RX7 boot space is not a problem for me. So what i need to know is, Is a bigger sub box better or is there a certain (BEST) size for the sub. I will be installing 2 8" subs in this box. Any information would be helpfull. Also would the box need to be ported?

Cheers Garith.

hey GJ mate, it depends on whether your subs are \'free-air\' or do need a box.

if they are free-air you can stick them on a parcel shelf and let them use the whole boot as a box. Most subs though do require a certain volume of box. Hopefully you have some instructions with the subs as this will tell you all the critical numbers u need!
HTH :D

Hi trotter,

Thanks for the info, There are no destructions with the sub but i am almost certain they need a box. I will search the net and try and find instructions for these VIBE subwoofers to find out what the volume of the box will be.

Cheers Garith.

i think i may have a program somewhere that helps you design your own box if you fancy giving it a go? let me know if you need it and ill try to find it!

Whatever sub you get should give you the specs required. I.e. what volume it needs or whether it\'s open or not.

For what it\'s worth I\'m going to attempt to build a box around the spare wheel well :)

8inch subs on the whole work best in just under 1cu/ft something like .8 or similar, and sealed. don\'t go big unless you want to be ovewhelmed with bass. Depends how you like your music i suppose.

if you have 2 of them bulid one box but with a wall in the middle of the 2 subs, however in this wall put in a 3" hole but don\'t port them externally. With external ports on subs they case spikes in the bass line this can damage smaller subs. Sealed is they way forward in my opinion with 2 8\'s nice shape punchy bass.

hope this helps

Thanks again trotter.

Think i found what i need from the site. YES that would be great if you could find the program so i can design a box. I have a rough idea of what i want but it would be nice to see if it will actually work.

Cheers Garith.

P.S. I have started to fit VIBE components to the fron doors (not having rear speakers) At the moment i have connected the head unit output to the Xover and out of the Xover i have connected to the original speaker wire in the original speaker loom. Would it be better to go from Xover directly to Speaker? or is the speaker loom good enough?.

Hi McCarthy,

Great information I would not have thought about a dividing wall in the box. So is that 1 cu/ft per sub or for both? I like bass But i like crystal clarity better so i think your idea producing sharp punchy bass is excatly what i need.

Cheers Garith.

Hi Probedb,

I am looking at having my box between suspension housings and under rear stut brace facing back of drivers seat as i have no rear seat just bins i will take the pull down flap out so the subs are visable. Doing it this way i should still be able to get to spare wheel if i need to without removing sub box.

yes but one thing, make sure that if your messurements allow .8 cu/ft inside. for example 12x12x12 = 1728cubic inches or 1 cubic foot, but that is an outside messuremant not allowing for the depths of the wood. in reality that 1 cubic foot box is 10.5x10.5x10.5 = 1157.6 cubic inches if your were to messure inside the box allowing for the depth of the wood.

does that make sense

if you want clarity then def go for a sealed box, as for speaker question, someone with a rex will know better than me but if the wires look decent enough then keep them, but going direct from x-over to speaker gives less chance for the sound signal to get distorted IMO.

i found that program, you want to give me your e-mail address and ill mail it to ya? :)

Hi McCarthy,

Yes i see (I think) So if the measurment for my subs is .8 cu/ft that is the inside measurment of the box which will be 9.6x9.6x9.6 = 884.7 cubic inch\'s
is this right?

Cheers Garith.

P.S I think you are right i will run from Xover to speakers with the Flat 16 cable supplied.

Hi again,

Another question. As i have stated i am going to run 2 8" subs each one being powered by a vibe vp2 amp Bridged my question is can i run a single channel to each amp from the head unit i.e using each sub as a left & right rear or do i run stereo channels to each amp and have the amp convert to mono for the bridge? in other words am i going to have to spend more money on another RCA lead and y Splitters?

Cheers Garith.

Check if you h/u has a sub-out or if there\'s a switchable low-pass filter on the rear out or your amp as you don\'t really want to run the subs without one. If you select the cut-off frequency too high it\'ll affect the imaging...

Hi Elford Tim,

I dont knpw if it is an actual sub-out but there is rear speaker output left&right RCA plugs (one red one white) and in the manual it states that this can be connected to an amp. Thats why i was wondering if both these goto to each amp i.e RCA Y connecters to split them or can i run one lead to each amp making the amps and the sub connected to it in fact rear L & rear R

Cheers Garith.

if its a dedicated sub output, it\'ll say "sub output" or something similar (not trying to sound patronising so if it comes across like that apologies in advance!) What this is is an output that bypasses the internal amp in the head unit, allowing your amps to get the signal untouched.

if you only have the one output then by all means connect that to your amp(s)...you have the option of doing it two ways...

1) run the RCA cables to one amp, then (assuming your amp has an RCA output as well as the input) connect it daisy-chain stylee to the second and run a sub off each one.

2) run the RCA cables to the amps, then use a splitter to split the cables - 1 to one amp, 1 to the other. And again, run a sub off each one.

These are the simplest ways to do it IMO but im sure someone else will know other ways!

Which one you choose depends on the connections on your amps!

HTH!

Hi Trotter,
