Title: Help RX-7 Decision?? Any Help Appreciated
Post by: smith_wolves on November 28, 2006, 01:56:49 PM
Hey i\'m a newbie to the site and to RX-7\'s. I\'ve gotta start somewhere, i\'m only 18 but 19th birthday next year i will be looking to sell my third car and purchase a generation 3 RX-7. I\'m usually a single driver if not its usually my girlfriend, though i will take my brothers with me time to time n their young n small. What model should i be looking for? i have heard the type X fits that category?? can anyone spread some light on this for me?

I havent to high a budget but what can i get between £3000-£4000, i dont really want to go above this but will see??

Whats good to look at? I know rebuilds are a must but what millage is good for my price? age? no mods? little mods?

I\'ve been searching for insurance n have finally got a qoute of £800 or £1200 fully comp. Is this good for a 19yr old??

While thirdly how much is it to run a rx-7 over a year with around average millage?

Finally whens the best time to buy?

All the help would be grateful, in advance thanks Rob

at £3-4k you will not get one with a rebuild that is for sure.  and any going for that price then i wouldnt count on them lasting much longer that 6 months to a year until the engine goes pop.  so if you will get a specialist to rebuild the engine, you really need to factor in about another £3k minimum.
and also at that price you will be looking at a 92-93 really.

as for running cost what ever you think it will cost, double it, infact tripple it.
they can do any from 12-22 miles per galon normally.  but trust ,me they really are not cheap to run at all.
you have to do oil changes every 3000miles etc.

not trying to scare you off as they are amazing cars an i am also young (21yr).just being truthful.    but if i hadnt had the large amount of savings (for a house deposit but all gone on my rex) there is no way i would still own one.  and when the engine went, i wouldnt have been able to rebuild it so would have been stuck wil a car that unless you are gonna strip is worth bugger all

the market its quite poor for selling at the moment (mainly due to the country being overrun with cheap/bad imports that have saturated the market) so good if you are buying.

Exactly what this man said, also to budget is your fuel costs, looking at £70 to fill the tank from empty, plus on normal driving you will see around 220-240miles for a tank!

I\'m having trouble with your insurance quote, sorry it just can\'t be right.

Double and tripple check and then have a look at the \'insuring your rotary\' thread you\'ll see the sort of money 25yr olds are paying.

I\'m 22 and pay something like that... most FD3S are imports and make sure you are getting a quote for a 1992 + Import Twin Turbo 2616 (i think it is on insurance)

p.s you wouldnt want an FD as your daily runner. I did and it\'s nothing but trouble.

What insurance company gave you that quote rob? I cant see it being for an fd, more like an fc which were 92 and earlier.

Yeh, you have got a qoute for the wrong car.

My mate wanted to add his 20 year old Girlfrend to his Insurance and it would have gone from £600 Fully comp to £1370 (spot the diffrence)

Another tip, Check out the Exess before you comit, I work in a Body shop and recently i\'ve seen more than one car come through with a £1000 exess :Nono! They all seem to be young lads that do it too (there is no such thing as CHEAP car insurance there is always a catch)

i agree with the above, 800 fully comp at 19? there no way bud,.. im 26 and last year i own a rover 220 coupe, i was 730 fully comp i had 6 years no claims and live in the countryside with my car in a garage with a cat1 alarm.. now the only way i get cheap insurance on a rex is through trade insurance, im 630 fire and theft, renewals due january :P
As for buying a rx7? theres no point buying a cheap one 3-4k if thats all you can afford, there a be reasons its that cheap.. i.e needs a rebuild, tatty bodywork, knackerd turbos/suspension,.. dont get me wrong you may be lucky, lol but i doubt it. can you do any of the work yourself i.e rebuilding the engine? rebuild kits and housing you cud rebuild for say 1500, renewing almost all the parts if you shop around..
Running costs are expensive, these run on optimax only unless its remaped(300 bucks) my local 1.12 a litre and that a get you 50miles if you drive under 40 :D which is impossible..
Dont get me wrong this a be the best car you`l ever drive/own but please do your research, this sites the best there is and anything you wanna know jus ask :)

cheers
craig

Hi Mate, Not trying to put you off either but if you have a budget of £3-4000 then run a mile from Rx7, its just not viable. You\'ll have a car that doesn\'t work stuck on the drive, no money to fix it, and a massive overdraft from trying! For that sort of budget you should look at something that goes for £2-3k such as a 200sx or similar, that way you have a grand to spend on rebuilding / repairs  and just NORMAL maintainance! Also I\'d confirm that insurance quote as it doesn\'t look right? Don\'t mean to be negative, just realistic so you know what to expect if you go ahead with it.

100% agree, £3000-4000 will get you a sh1tter. I honestly would think twice about buying one unless you can afford a nice one, buying one is the cheapest part its running them thats expensive.

Reasons for overly low insurance on RX\'s
:
*) Not quoted as an import (and there were only 120 odd UK cars)
*) Quoted for the old model (FC not FD) - They were both made in 92
*) Wrong engine capacity - It\'s read 2616 on every policy I\'ve had.

Check ALL of these first. To be honest, I\'d be expecting around for a 19 yr old, a HUGE excess, and probably limited miles.

Oh, and 3-4k will probably net you a problematic sh1tter.

The suggestion for a 200 sx is great idea though. Many RX owners earned their spurs with the sx, a great car.

I\'m 31 with 8 years NCB and I\'m paying £800!!!!!

£30 petrol = 100 miles if you\'re careful. I work 5 miles from home and spend over £200 a month on petrol.

Budget for a second car for the winter.

£100 every 3000 miles for oil changes unless you do them yourself., plus £200-300 pound every 6000 miles for services and that\'s a B service.

Start saving £3000 for a rebuild straight away, it will happen.

This is not the car you want to buy cheap, you\'ll end up paying more just to keep it on the road.

Apart from all that - it\'ll be the best car you ever own!!!

Sorry chap, just being realistic.

Im sure I am not the only one who runs them as daily drivers. I think if you buy right and keep on top of it there is no reason why not. it sounds like you need to wait till your running budget is bigger though. Just being honest. Oh - and if you ask me condition is MUCH more important than age. My 92 ( in the for sale section) could do with an engine rebuild but otherwise is better in every department than my 94, in fact its better than most FDs ive seen.

i reckon most people who buy cheap are willing to do most the work themselves to save some cash, well the ones who`ve done there research lol.. my advice, for 3-4k buy a gts-t skyline bud :)

Hi

Welcome to the club and hopefully soon you will get your RX.

I run mine as a daily driver as well and spend around £200 a month on petrol primarily stuck in London traffic.  I do about 6k miles a year.  Work out your petrol according to that. That is about 2400 a year on juice.  Mine is a 96 Bathurst â€" with a rebuild engine 2 years ago and still cost around £500 every time I take it to a specialist for something “allegedly” simple.

You should be spending at least 7.500 k on a good car bought from a member of this club so you know all the history of the car.

Regards,
Michael

No i was looking at a smaller budget for the initial purchase and then money put aside for work to be done but if i can find a good example for around £6k i will thats not a problem. Fuel isnt a major concern as by the sounds of what people do i am budgeted for. I have also checked with the insurers n it is for an import at £1350 but thats affordable to. i live in the countryside in a small quiet village i think its like code a for insurance propper cheap.

Bit of a contradiction there??  To be honest this doesnt sound like the car for you, even if you spend a decent wedge on a mint one there\'s no saying that the car will not go tit\'s up even after a rebuild as there\'s so many things that can be factored in that can go wrong.  Im not trying to put you off just making you see what your letting yourself in for. :2eek

My \'project\' has cost me just a little under £10K so far, and considering i\'ve saved money where ever I can as I import them myself etc, it\'s still an expensive weekend car. :spank

As people have said try looking at 200sx\'s or if your not that bothered about seats try an MR-2....  Otherwise start saving!...

i havent even owned mine a year and i recon it owes me £15+k

as some one said about engines, even a good one can go.  my engine went within 3200miles of rebuild, so they aint exactly predictable.  you do need to be able to get hold of some wonga if you need it.

Even FCs (2nd gens) cost a bit to keep on the road and most of us FC owners are tight-wads! ;) mentioning no names!

I reckon so far my car has cost me upwards of £12k excluding fuel (bearing in mind this was a good codition FC that I got for a bargain price!) over the past 3 years.
