Title: bridge ports
Post by: D1 WTF on November 27, 2006, 02:46:23 PM
i have heard of a brab brab port or something like that.........is that a nick name for bridge port?

i understand what a bridge port looks like as i was shown one but......

if you do a bridge for on a REW (gen 3) will it way more stress on the engine and therfore decrease engine life?

what are the real advantages of a bridge port, performance/power wise?

could it happily be driven as a road car?

what is the difference between a 1/2 bridge port and a normal?

any other info that would need to be taken into account?

thanks in advance

Seems like the UK rotary world has gone bridgeport crazy! Soon everyones gonna have one.
Personally I\'d go for \'good\' street port 99% of the time.

I have a half bridge which is done on the secondaries, great for spooling up a big single. Way too much porting for twins, what turbo you have D1?

turbo technics T70, not huge, but medium to big

i already have a med-big street port is it just an extension from that or can a street not be moddified into a bridge

engine life etc?

What rpm do you see full boost?

dont really know as i have never had it running properly since rebuild before the engine went pop.  i think about 4500- 5000rpm for full boost, from the short bit of driving i did after it was properly mapped.

obviously depending which boost setting i was in, 0.75 or 1 bar.

well after my half bridge Port Full boost was achieved 600 rpm lower hardly any lag at 3.5-3.6K, its making positive boost at 1600rpm. idle will be shot to bits I idle at 1.1K to 1.3K, but exiting corners is brilliant as I am on boost straight away

so is the brab brab the noise at idle?
so it isnt really so practical as a road car then, good for weekend toy and track car etc, or drag obviously.

does it stress the engine more then?

yep the Brap Brap is the noise it makes at idle

Dre uses his car everyday on the Port, I only drive the Rexy at weekends and during the week in the evenings sometimes, my car is too quick for the road at the mo not enough traction, plus my car is LOUD on boost.

Depends how you use your car and what you want the car to do, The extended street port I had was more then enough for the road, Bridge port is ideal for track work coming out of corners

ok, cool.  tempted to get pip to slightly enlarge my porting as he has to rebuild the engine again.

D1 - have to agree with Ross and Blitz.

How much power and drivability do you want?

Done right, they are an awesome machine.  As a daily driver - I don\'t think it is the best combination.  If you are just driving on the street of a weekend/fun car - it can be nice.  The brap brap is an attention seaker, and can be a bugger in traffic etc.

The right porting/turbo combination and they can be awesome to drive - low down power from the engine itself, producing just the right amount of boost down low - through to loads of power up into the top revs. But you still have to drive in a particular style due to the brap brap (which is hard on the transmission etc.).

Fot the last 12 years I have driver a ROTARY as a daily driver in some form or another,to be very honest....you have to adapt your driving style to whatever combination you have.
Example one:

to example two:

to example three:

These examples are some of the combinations used,.....and this is some with and without the benifit of high tech fuel injection or turbo. It is ultimately the feel you want and the response from you car.
To be honest a big street port desires some driving ability to keep it smooth and driveable, almost the same as a lil bridge. The down side of a bridge is that you have to peddle it a bit on pull off as some of the desired \'torque\' is not there at low rpm, however once you get going it so so cool.
The street port on the other hand is easier on the pull away but loses some of that higher rpm \'grunt\' you experience on the bridge port.
With good mapping you can virtually make the car a lot easier to drive around town.........! Yes I do get a lot more attention driving the brapper than this..............
Title: Extended street port
Post by: D1 WTF on November 27, 2006, 09:08:12 PM
as you prob know my engine was only built about 2 months ago.  and it is being built again now, so i know what figures it is producing etc as it did get mapped before it went pop.

it is street ported (not huge, mediumish i think)  now, what difference would it make if i was to get it turned into a extend street port.

would it increase the power? bhp or acceleration?
would it shorten engine life?
what difference would it make to the drive, bareing in mind this is my only car at the moment.

Any increase in port size will give you the benifit of increased horsepower and performance.Porting your motor,in my opinion does not shorten the life span UNLESS it is a radical race motor and abused as such !! If it is your daily driver then more care and attention should be given to it on a daily basis. In saying that, any motor built with \'love and attention\' will last a long time...:InLove :yes
