Title: Ideal spec
Post by: Ian@TunerUK on November 27, 2006, 12:37:19 PM
Right, as I think the car is going to need a rebuild, chances are I\'ll start getting parts together once christmas is out of the way.

Now, while the engine is out, thought I may aswell go for a little more than a standard rebuild, what sort of spec would I need to get around 350ishbhp atw? Now I ain\'t just figure chasing, I plan on using the car on track quite a bit once done so would need a punchy and responsive engine with a nice spread of torque across the rev range...

Suggestions please :Thumbsup!

are you running a single or stock twins at the mo?  or any other extras that you already have?

Just stock at the mo, standard engine wise bar decat exhaust and apexi filters

350atw is attainable by uprated twins, uprated IC and rad and a PFC with larger injectors, or with all that stuff plus a reasonably sized single. Depends where you want your power as to which one you go with though.

The choice is yours really though. As far as the actual engine itself goes,OEM mazda is fine for 350atw, and quite a lot more. Im not a fan of 3mm apex seals. Stick with mazda 2mm. You might want to look at porting the engine while its out to gain you a little extra power, but this can lose you torque which is important on the track alot of the time.

a nice responsive single should get you some of that torque back though shouldnt it?
plus it will then be a smoother power delivery with the single.

yes D1 thats totally correct...depends what your looking for i suppose. Some turbos will give you reasonable "around town" response at low revs but go on to flow enough to produce 6-700hp at high revs. Other turbos will flow great in the low revs but max out and start to tail off power wise by 6000rpm and even suffer from compressor surge and/or death.

Unfortunately its pretty much a case of trial and error to see what you like. People can give you pointers to show you what kind of turbo will give you the response your asking for, but that doesnt mena your going to like it when you drive it.

Ian,

let the engine rave ^^

get a street port, with high quality rebuild, with new rotorhousings, and all new seals and balanced if possible with extra fine tolerances ;)

now, it is up to you.... you wanna spend money?
go for Greddy TD06-25G, or HKS T04S, where as I would prefer the Greddy kit. Get it all done with 850 all around, which will give you enough juice for the power you want. But please remember to upgrade your rad with low temp thermostatt and a nice I/C Vmount or front mount what ever you like or can affort.

You are on budget? thean get a big rad, and nice I/C, 850cc all arround with nice fuel pump (Walbro is OK, SARD 280 is much better). Get a 3 Bar Map sensor and get you car tuned to 350 hp.

REgards
Iwan

Depending on how much you are planning to throw at it, the best way would be.

Extended port (let one of the big names rebuild it Reworx,WGT etc)
PFC
1600cc secondrys (so you can keep your 550\'s),Rail,Reg,Apexi BNR pump (gives you some left ;))
Alloy rad/Intercooler
GT3540 Kit

Thats my set up but i\'m going for a garrett TO4Z.

The most important thing is to have it well set up.

What benefits would you say the uprated twins have over a single? Or aren\'t there any?

twins will have slightly better acceration from a standing start, but i would say go single everytime.  i was really dubious about going single as i loved the way the twins were but i am so glad i went single.  it just produces much smoother power and there is loads more room for more power etc

All depends on how far you plan too go, If you buy a set of Stage 3 BNR\'s (Twins) they will produce more power than alot of singles while still picking up quickly, But you would be paying for two turbos so it would cost about the same as a single set up??

I\'d imagine the single turbo would be simpler? Getting rid of the rats nest while there...

yep, especially for track use it would be best to be simpler, easier to find problems etc

Duno about that, If its all in good order (new Check valves and had a Repipe) i can\'t see why a single would be Better? Simpler maybe, but alot of people like the twins and the Power a set of Uprated twins puts out about the same a decent size Single.

There is alot to be said for Singles though, I\'ll be going that way i think but only after realy thinking about it becosuse i did\'nt want to loose the FD\'ness of the car (I love the Twins ;)) BUT do a bit of reading up before you buy, There are alot of Copys and dodgy Turbo Builders out there.
