Title: Wastegates and Boost Controllers
Post by: gonzoninja on November 27, 2006, 10:19:39 AM
I\'m thinking of going single next year and have my eyes set on a GT35R that I want to run about 1 bar of boost on. I think that should be enough for me. At this point in time the engine has no porting.

Now, I know I\'m going to need an external wastegate and am looking at a TIAL 40mm unit (if I can find one, or is this TOO big), however the spring rates confuse me. So the obvious thing is a 1 bar pressure spring. However I reckon I may want to run it up to 1.2bar at some points e.g. if I ever go down the strip.

So then I\'d need a higher spring rating on the wastegate right? Or do I just need a boost controller which allows me to run safely over the 1 bar wastegate spring?

Normally I\'m not this stupid, but obviously going single represents a huge investment, I just wanna get it right...

You want to run a spring that is as close to your desired max boost as possible, otherwise your boost control will be ineffective. The spring pressure needs to be less than the max boost that you will run a boost controller to. So, if you want to run 1 bar (14.7psi) off the boost controller, you\'d be best off running a 10psi spring.
