This might seem a silly question, but why do people remove the air pumps???
The reason I ask is, when it comes to MOT time people seem to have problems with the imissions tests & end up failing the MOT. I know that if you remove it you get a little more power as there is less drag on the engine, but wouldn\'t it make more sence to keep it on as it pumps fresh air in to the exhaust, which obviously dilutes the emissions making it easyer to pass the MOT!!!!!
Waiting for the :Nono! :spank

Some people remove it because they can. Others because it creates a bit more room. Others to un-clutter the engine bay. And others, because they have to as there is no room for it due to single turbo upgrade.
When i first removed it, it was because i could, and it un-cluttered the engine bay. Now, i need toi removed because i have a single tubby. I have an advantage in that my mot station don\'t test mine for emissions! :D (J-reg car)
Found this old thread, it mght be the same for the 3rd gen????

im removing mine because im adding a decat so its no longer needed plus i want to free as much space as poss to keep the air flow flowing as best as poss :D
If you do remove don\'t forget you will need the Engine Blanking Kit----There is one For Sale-not by me. HTH.
This is more a theory question realy..... I\'m going to be decating mine when I get the power FC & decat pipe, but I was going to keep the air pump & tap it in to the decat pipe (as it would be if you have a cat) to reduce the imissions for the MOT testers!!!!

u cn buy race decats that give you better emissions but still get the power increase :) naw cheap tho lol..
Already got a straight through R-Magic one coming from John Yorke!!

All the air pump does is keep the temp up in the cat at lower revs so useless if you don\'t have a cat. Also the whole assembly weighs quite alot and your improving airflow over the engine helping with cooling

well i have kept the pump on for now but just electrically disconnected it, the air just pumps to atmosphere for now. I to am tinkering with the idea of porting iot into my decat pipe. I can get a 400 freeflow cat for about £100 so i will tap it into this. It can all but help.
Remember you are also using the engine to drive something else via a belt, so you are losing a bit of horse power by driving it...not a huge amount granted, but some...
Yep, its more a case the engine seems to rev much more quickly. Mine revs really well with the Air pump, the AC pump and the waterpump removed !

I was told that the standard airpump add\'s air in 2 places. 1 being the center section and one being the manifold or downpipe (can\'t remember which). So if you take off the center one the air should still get into the system anyway.
