Title: Bad signs? (time for rebuild)
Post by: Ian@TunerUK on November 24, 2006, 09:55:27 AM
Car idles rough from cold, turbo boost doesn\'t stay constant on idle until warm. When cold and I put it in gear the revs drop right down to nearly cutting down. White smoke on start up...

And I going to have to dig deep? :(

Post by: Jit on November 24, 2006, 10:16:51 AM
how long is the white smoke on startup...if its a fair while, then it sounds like poss coolant seal failure :(
Although a fluctuating vaccuum reading on idle is normally a bad sign....does it start on both rotors?

It\'s there for a bit, few mins maybe?

How can you tell if it\'s starting on both rotors? Still sounds the same once started (obviously apart from rough idle)

one rotor will catch, and itll sound rough for a moment, and then the second will start....
only one way to find out if its rebuild time or not.....get it comp tested and get the coolant system pressure tested...i think id be right in saying WGT is closest to you

Yeah WGT ain\'t too far away, think I\'ll have to get up there and get it checked out!

Balls! lol

The boost gauge will fluctuate on idle if the revs fluctuate though - and that isn\'t necassarily a sign of a broken apex seal.

Just a thought, the alternator belt needs changing, it\'s squeeking a bit and I have a new one on it\'s way, would this affect anything I\'ve said?

^ Im afraid I dont think the belt would cause that, hope im wrong tho.

It was a stab in the dark to be honest, no harm in trying it though

an alterantor belt done up too tight could accelerate bearing wear....but not cause any of the probs above :(

balls !! this sounds like my car only the revs dont drop down that much when its in gear, and no boost guage to check.

Are your coolant levels stable? Note the level on the dipstick in the overflow tank when the engine is cold. Take it for a run up to normal temperature, then let it cool overnight. Check the level again when cold. If the level is the same, chances are you\'re ok. If the level increases then coolant is not being drawn back into the engine under vacuum and it\'s very likely you\'ve got imminent problems. Hope that helps
Regards
Gary

Dont sound too good Ian,

Check all your hose attachments just incase there a hole somewhere and you are losing vaccum, although it does sound like it might be time for rebuild.

Whats the mileage ? i know yours is a twin turbo setup more or less standard engine right ?

Yeah standard bar filters and exhaust. rebuilt approx 30/35k miles ago by WGT.

Will check the coolant thing this weekend thanks :cheers

Hmmm alittle early for engine wear already on standard internals but wonder if it was a standard rebuild rather than full ?? as 35K isnt the norm on a standard engine, however has been heard of so not out of the question completely.

Have a good look around it at the weekend and do the coolant thing and see what we got, i have a family function tomorrow otherwise would have popped over to see you as only down the road,

It\'s ok Gurj, thanks for the offer though :Thumbsup!

It had a full rebuild, new housings the lot, it never got used that much though I don\'t think by the previous owner, short runs here and there by the owners wife, it was rebuilt in 2000/2001 I think when it was first imported.

If the Belt is slipping on the Water pump (eg. if its loose and has Underdriving pulleys on) it will cause Problems. ask any one thats had a Air pump sieze ;)

I would sugest fix any Ovious things like Belt etc then take it up to Pip\'s if you have a Coolant seal Problem you will know about it (Coolant Levels will drop and it will show signs of over heating)

If your Levels are not droping it may be more likely you need a Service.

But Pip will tell you.

been to carls today, very good compression, so all clear in that department, second turbo boost isnt coming in all the time etc so i think you have less to worry about in that sense

07737 257 377 if you want a chat about it fella,so busy but i would love to help.

(out for a mealtonight so after 10-11 is ok)

fiddled with the idle screw etc, tps, idle control valve and just made it idle that little higher eradicating the idle fluctuation to an extent and also it doesnt buck when changing gear now because the revs dont fall dangerously low, i was far more keen to find anything that may be causing it but i did know that if i adjusted the idle i could get rid but because mine didnt do it all the time i didnt go down that route. still has 2nd turbo boost issues but mechanically sound.

boost or more accuratly vacuum will not stay steady when the idle is hunting so i wouldnt worry there and smoke or steam at this time of year is fine, mine creates a large cloud in the morning but its steam more than anything, also with the idle higher the alternator is charging better helping to with most other issues

give me a call anyways fella

regards

Anyway update...

Dropped it off at WGT this morning, work will begin first week in January when Pip will strip it down to see what\'s wrong, then we\'ll go from there!!

mine sounds a lil like this but i wouldnt say the idling was rough... just tends to rev high for a lil bit then drop down to around the 1k mark... i always thought they were supposed to rev high for quite a while?

But then again mines on 80k miles and no rebuild apparently, runs perfectly tho and got 276atw a couple of weeks ago :) so maybe i aint due for one just yet?

got a coolant leak atm tho :( really gotta get that fixed, gonna watch this thread and see if anymore problems that i have come up here, if so, im gonna get down to rotechnics for a comp check!

Well had Pip on the phone earlier!

Apex seals and springs have gone...

Housing have minimal wear. An engine mount has gone and there was an injector leaking. He\'s replaced most of the bushes now for the Powerflex items I gave him aswell, hoping to have the car ready for end of next week!

i feel for you fella

well mine still has problems after my visit to a specialist and to be honest he didnt check very much. so i am in a position where i am just so disapointed and desheartened i just dont want to take it elsewhere or do anything to it at the mo, even though its on my mind all the time

It\'s back on the road!! :D

Picked it up this morning, just got the annoying 1000 mile run in now which is going to kill me!

Pip has informed me my engine also has a bridge port! :2eek So an Apexi will be sooner rather than later I think, he reckons we can get another 40/50bhp from a decent map, does that sound about right?
Title: Bad signs? (time for rebuild)
Post by: Grizzly on January 13, 2007, 02:36:27 PM
Your running a Bridge on a Stock ecu??
Title: Bad signs? (time for rebuild)
Post by: Ian@TunerUK on January 13, 2007, 02:43:11 PM
It would seem that way, there\'s nothing on the receipts when I brought the car, so I didn\'t know to be honest!

Pip seems to think it\'ll be ok for now, it\'s a bit rich low in the rev range but he plugged an Apexi in and even with the base map it was a different animal!
Title: Bad signs? (time for rebuild)
Post by: Grizzly on January 13, 2007, 02:51:01 PM
I\'m a bit confused? you would know if it was a Bridge, them more back pressure (stock Turbo\'s, cat etc) the worse the Bridge will run.

Is Pip saying don\'t run any boost on that Ecu? tbh it would worrie me that the map in the car is not correctr for the Timing on the engine.
Title: Bad signs? (time for rebuild)
Post by: Ian@TunerUK on January 13, 2007, 02:58:36 PM
The car has no cat on, how big is a bridge port? Perhaps it was only a small port, I\'m still learning about all this to be honest :3Confused

He was fine with it the way it is now for the time being. I\'m only running it in at the moment, so there\'s no big load being put on the engine.
Title: Bad signs? (time for rebuild)
Post by: Grizzly on January 13, 2007, 03:30:53 PM
So your saying you have a Half Bridge with stock turbo\'s etc, stock ECU and decat!!

Size oviously matters but in a Bridge they alter the Timing so much that its a Problem for ecu\'s set up for stock port timing, it may help if its small but its still not good. I realy hope you have some sort of aftermarket ecu there.

All i can say is Drive carfully and don\'t get it on boost (if that possable with a Bridge on Twins).
Title: Bad signs? (time for rebuild)
Post by: Ian@TunerUK on January 13, 2007, 05:28:29 PM
The thing is, it\'s probably been set up like this for about 6 years? I\'ve only owned the car 6 months, I\'m a bit worried now, I assume Pip knows how it should be running, I\'ll be getting an Apexi next month anyway fingers crossed so it won\'t be like this for too long!

As long as you dont go 1psi over standard boost then the ECU should be able to controll the fueling fine surely?
Title: Bad signs? (time for rebuild)
Post by: Grizzly on January 14, 2007, 10:42:28 AM
Thats not the problem, its the engine Port Timing and if you\'ve ever driven a Bridge you\'ll know its verry hard to drive it off boost (seems to be there all the time)

Just imagen how much more air you will be getting through that port to the same amount of fuel?

as you say i\'m sure Pip has done something to stop it coming on Boost or to cope with the extra fuel needed but i think if pip has said its ok i proberly think he means its ok to run in on (i.e. no boost and under 4k)

If its not a daft question how did you not pick up it was a Bridge before? Has it never idled smoothly? I know with small turbo\'s the power etc is alot less but when i had a T2 running on a bridge it ran realy badly, i was told that the turbo was increasing the overlap effect by not letting the exhaust gasses out at low rpm.

Quote from: GrizzlyJust imagen how much more air you will be getting through that port to the same amount of fuel?

That\'s what I always thought but a friend of mine just cant get his round how little we can do on stock ECU.  He has an MR2 Turbo runs standard ecu with much bigger intercooler, turbo back exhaust, bigger BB turbo\'s. induction kit and raised boost etc.  All this on the stock ECU.

The only things I can think which makes a difference is injector duty or our silly 1spi fuel cut and to only 1 rotor leaving the other one helpless to det if you overboost.

Stock ECU has to adjust quite a few perameter\'s.  Imagine the different volumes of air from driving on a freezing day to driving on a 28 degree summer\'s day.  Then it also has to take in atmospheric pressure so again there is a difference from driving round the coast to much higher altitudes.

Personally I would always use a PFC (or whatever aftermarket ECU) and have it mapped cause its so much better and you can controll the parameters like fuel cut better.  He just got me thinking of the possabilities (which immediately gave me a headache :D )

Post by: Ian@TunerUK on January 14, 2007, 12:30:43 PM
I wouldn\'t know the difference with driving a ported rotary as this is my first RX, it drives smooth enough, idles fine etc

Pip told me it would benefit from an Apexi and he\'d recommend it, but it wasn\'t an immediate thing that \'had\' to be done straight away?

I\'ll be getting one as soon as it\'s run in anyway :Thumbs-up

Well there we go, all run in now and everything is honky dory!!

Took it to Pip this morning who gave it the once over and changed all the oils! Got him to do a dyno run aswell. It\'s running very rich at the moment so he didn\'t do a full power run, only revving to 6500rpm but we got a figure of 215bhp @ 6500rpm at the wheels, which would be around 250ish at the fly wheels I\'m guessing? So not bad really all things considering.

Pip reckons we\'ll see another 40/50bhp from a decent map on the Apexi ECU on standard boost, if I decide to go for more boost then we\'ll need to look at injector cycle and take it from there.

But all in all, it\'s good to have it back properly :D
