Title: Pop goes my Rotary
Post by: rxangus on November 20, 2006, 10:25:31 PM
Hi all,

Just blown an Apex seal I think. :WaveBye Massive loss of power under full boost going uphill at 4500rpm. Car now sounds like a tractor and the boost gauge is fluttering under vacuum. Limped home on one rotor.

Getting it trailered to WGT tomorrow. For info car is a 96 FD with 54K miles.

Nice flames from the exhaust though :flamed. Quick way to gut the cat!

Sounds like its rebuild time. An excuse for a street port though!

ouch... sorry to hear that fella.

if its any consolation, you\'ll have a brand new Rex in a few weeks...

(unless your braking it!)

Suppose when I get it fixed Pip won\'t be able to map it until it\'s run in? Just wondering because it\'s a helluva long way....

no he will only be able to put a base map on it, and then once run in he will be able to map it.  dont make the mistake i did and rock up after just doing 1000miles though, as my engine haddent loosen up enough to be able to get full revs so i went away with a 6500rpm rev limit, did another 2000miles any recently went back up to get full revs

Just remember a large street port is cheaper than a small one ;)

Why do you think its blown engine? Same simptoms are caused by a disconnected MAP sensor. Engine shaking at idle, fluctuating idle, black smoke out of exhaust when trying to get into boost. Do your engine still rev up to redline if you drive it and only slowly apply the throttle ?

Ouch that hurts, I was lucky?!? as mine was getting work done by him when he realised that the oil seals had failed, so I just left it with him to rebuild. You\'ll need to take it back to pip after its run in for a service and check anyway otherwise you\'ll invaldate the warranty. Get him to map it then. The drive is not too bad, I quite enjoyed coming back up after the initial service (after the run in period)

its just a long way to drive with no boost and at low rpm.
have you tried doing a compression test, there is a way of very roughly checking this without the special equipment, try doing a search if not ill post later as I\'m on the way out.
good luck with getting it sorted though mate.

Car is now on it\'s way to WGT so look out for it on a trailer on the M6!

I\'m pretty certain it\'s seal failure because the Map Sensor was still connected (first thing I checked) and there were flames and strong petrol smell coming out of the exhaust even at idle!

If I go for a mild streetport, do I need to upgrade anything else? I have Power FC, cat back and air intake. What benefit would I see?

Thanks

Angus

Don\'t mean to butt in, but guessing from your question you\'re on the lookout for a trusted transporter. I\'ve had excellent service from //www.paulridley.co.uk
when mine needed taking to Pips. He understood the differences between getting an "ordinary" car onto a trailer and a lowered RX7, took great care over the vehicle and I felt comfortable letting him drive off with my pride and joy, complete with keys and minus me! Just a heads up, HTH

Cheers Jim

i was actually just doing some investigation actually, about something.

that looks like a good service though, are they expensive?

£140 for moving mine from Stourbridge to Pips (around 70 miles). Not the cheapest I\'m sure but a really good service, can\'t really put a price on peace of mind!
