Title: 99 spec engine - how can you tell?
Post by: dreamers on November 18, 2006, 11:45:24 AM
Finally about to buy my first rx7. It\'s meant to have had a 99 spec engine replacement but there are no receipts etc. for the work.

Is there any obvious way of finding out by looking at it by the untrained eye? I am gonna buy the car anyway and budget for a rebuild but just wondering..

your help would be appreciated as always

I didnt think the actual engine was different, just the turbo pack.

Not sure how to identify though I\'m afraid.

I am not aware of any differences on the later engine, turbo pack was upgraded on the 99 spec cars I dont think anything else was, sounds to me like a bit of a sales ploy, if its in your budget and it ticks all the right boxes go for it but I would be a bit suspect on the engine seeing as they are as rare as hens teeth in the 1st place, maybe he meant the engine was re-built then???

The rats nest is the sequential turbo operation, so i would have thought that would still be there unless its been converted to Non-seq.

I read somewhere that the rats nest was integrated into a black box moulding too.

Simple solution, ring Andrew at Jimmys, he has a Spirit R. He will be able to tell you.

Looking at it (i may be wrong) but it looks like it has all the 93 ancillaries, it may be a 99 Block though???

Thats alot of power on a stock Intercooler :yes looks nice.

For a quick look

The metal pipe across the top of the engine to the intercooler is on later model cars instead of the black plastic one but it is able to be swapped so you cant be sure from that.

yep, 99+ cars do have a black box under the UIM instead of the rats nest of vacuum hoses. As far as I know the only other thing different that is noticeable is the metal intercooler pipe as rextreme mentioned (see pic on http://www.flickr.com/photos/68834216@N00/188037764/in/photostream/  look at the large silver metal pipe just in front of the UIM and to the right of the air filters)

http://www.rx7.net.nz/newrx7.htm has some info on the difference in the turbos and 99 spec cars in general.

Cheers, Craig

Look under the oil Injectors.
All the other bits mentioned above are were introduced before 1999 except for the turbos, but they dont relate to the block.
