Title: turbo oil restrictor (or not)
Post by: kbareham on November 18, 2006, 09:52:01 AM
Chaps
I\'m sorting out the oil feed to my TA45 (old type Garrett thingy) and I have been told not to put an oil restrictor in the feed line. Is that how everyone is using older Garrett turbo\'s?
Thing is I need to make up and adapter to fit the feed to the turbo so I can just drill it to a smaller diameter if needed. That might be a bit difficult if I have already made it full flow though.

Hi Keith,

Personally I have never used a restrictor in any of the many Turbo conversions I have ever carried out for myself or customers or from the kits we sell.

I think you will find the oil pipe that you are joining onto is around 3mm i.d. so thats how I would make the union to connect it to the Turbo.

Most important thing is to make sure you keep the drain the same diameter as stock as I have know people make this up too small which leads to the oil backing up in the Turbo and causing loads of smoke !

I know of one poor soul who even brought a new Turbo but obviously still had the problem because of inadequate drainage.

Hope this helps

Thanks Clive. I\'ll go with the full flow inlet.

My plan was to make a drain with 5/8 pipe, which probably means I\'ll need to make up a new fitting for the engine end.

Kieth,
Go onto //www.rx7club.com This is an American based site, and there is alot of experiance to ask from with reference to oil restrictors in Garret turbos. 80 odd psi of pressure going through an old tubby may be asking for trouble. Better safe than sorry.

Chers,
