Title: Some urgent questions - PLEASE HELP
Post by: m4drx on November 18, 2006, 02:02:05 AM
hi guys, hope you can help as i dont have alot of time or money left to sort this but its either i sort it or i sell it :(

i have some of my issues from my other active threads still present such as,

1. Overfuelling & heisitation at high & sometimes just any heavy throttle (intermittant) on a stock ecu. checked lots of stuff & still present.

please have a look at my other threads if you can help as i am desperate to say the least.

2. revs drop dangerously/uncomfortably low whenever i put the clutch down but only when in a gear?!?

3. does anybody know where the main grounds are other that the ones off the negative terminal on the battery? checked the ecu one and stereo ones and a single one in the spare wheel well (with about 5/6 wires going to it) an all ok but i cant suss my earthing problem which i now believe is causing this.

still have the lights dimming when hazards flash and the brakes dimming when hazards or indicators are on and dimming of lights etc when braking & a drop in idle slightly?

can anyone help at all any pics etc would be appreciated as i\'m finding myself spending hours in the RAIN :( puzzled

Are you 100% its overfueling? if you have a bad conection to your Fuel pump or some thing of that nature you won\'t be getting the Full WOT fuel flow so it will lean out at High Load/Revs, It would be good to check your Rail Presure?

This sounds a Bit like you have a bad earth from the Battery to the Body, if there are lots of Symptoms of Bad earth (lights going dim and Engine earthing problems etc) may be worth cleaning the Battery Terminals then get two bits of Heavyish cable and conect an Earth (well) from the Battery too the Body shell and the engine.

Have you also had your Altinator/Battery tested to see if there still good? Could be some thing simple? (before now i\'ve seen Altinators go and the battery is starting the car with its surface charge then all the lights etc have been going dim) does it start ok?

May even be worth checking the Power that gets to the Fuel pump at WOT.

Ok, just been reading your Threads, One more Earth you may want to Try is the Ecu to Body (It lives under the NS Kick panel at the bottom of the A post)

I\'d also be looking at the Alt, if you are not seeing a full 12v or over at the Battery its worth checking.

Also its worth getting a mutimeter rigged up to the Fuel pump and check the Voltage thats going into it through the rev range, as it sounds like an Electrical problem you may not be seeing your 12v at Full throttle and so not getting the Correct Fuel flow (Hence your Miss fire)

Some thing else a mate told me to do a while ago with one of my old cars that had an Earth problem was to connect a Multi meter up to the neg on the Battery then set it to Ohms and touh it on every thing that needs a good erth to work (Engine,Starter,Alt,Light earths,Fuel pump earth,Ecu etc) then any that show high resistance replace or clean the earths until it gets a good reading.

I have been told before now the battery is there to get the motor started and to provide a Regulator, Not sure about the Fd but on my T2 i could take the battery off the car with it still running and the only thing that happened was the lights would dim. If the Alt is playing up and you have a good Battery you may be seeing the car more dependant on the battery that may not be getting charged properly??

Take my advise bud and stop messing around and getting advise from joe blokes on here.
Take your car to someone that knows what they are doing asap to avoid further guessing and messing!
Yes, you do have to pay for the privilage, but I can tell you it will be far less pocket damage in the end and you will know exactly where you stand with the car instead of playing around guessing, and possibly causing more damage!
You would also not be cold and wet with this option!

I get your Hint.

Maybe just shut this forum down would be the Answer, Don\'t know about you but i do try to help. Not every one has Endless Cash to pour into there car.

I don\'t agree with your Damage to pocket theory ether, if its an Electrical problem won\'t they just get an Auto electrican in and put there mark up on his bill?? alot of the time simple probelms that you could fix (if you knew what you are looking at) would cost £50 an hour more to fix.

Sorry, Griz not hitting at anyone

Just that I know the chap, seen the car and we\'ve chatted etc..  I have an idea on the problems and budget etc..  Plus I know the skill level involved as well.. :)

So to be honest the best thing is for him not to screw around and let it be sorted proffesionally as I think there may be more to it than it seems.. ;)

Yeh, i know there is a Line, But i guess most jobs on a car are Doable and i just don\'t see why people have to always take them to Garages? maybe can\'t be Arsed or lack of Technical know how but i see cars coming into work all the time with dumb things wrong and management stinging them for it.

I can also understand others may not be able to get there heads round how Mechanical componants work or don\'t like getting dirty becouse of the work they do, But at the end of the day you have two options, Spend time searching and reading to find the Problem you are faced with and possably fix it your self or pay some one else to do it for you.

thanks all of you guys for your feedback! i really appreciate it.

dom - will drop you a line in the morning dont want to disturb you now - but cheers bud

griz - i really have to agree with you, although i have had moments of madness with it i have done everything slowly & gently and after consulting a few ppl who know how.

on a number of occasions i had decided to book it into a tuner because i though it was something very serious but i either couldnt get me or it down there or realised i wouldnt be able to leave it or fork out for anything major at the moment.

i know a tuner will tell me all that is wrong + even if they charge alot for the privilage it is a privilage as they will spend thier 50quid an hour checking everything with a trained eye so i can respect that.

simply the only reasons why i am having a go as it were is because i am trying to learn as much as i can about the car while i have it which may not be forever :( & also because i have some mechanical knowledge & alot of logical knowledge but not alot of funds. i enjoy learning it & doing it but simply get stressed that its not at my own accord etc.

to be honest i could book it in and providing its not a rebuild i can afford to do so but i have found that most of my issues have perhaps been caused bya series of minor things but giving off some major symptoms.

anyways just to say i apreciate all you guys advice & i do think generally my car is ok and in a relatively fit condition as i have found it to have signs of some good major works done to it even perhaps a rebuild :) but little things are letting it down.

my frustration comes from lack of confidence as i cannot drive the car the way it should be as it were until i am confident in it rather than because of the problems it acctually has.

as it stands i will have it compression tested & looked over but first i am replacing & checking all those things that are obviously wrong/easy to do and spend time shopping around & save money on any parts that i need to stop a tuner saying whoever it may be saying "well all of these little bits could be causing it so replace etc etc first then come back.../it wil take me a few more hours to check).

as it stands i have replaced a check valve, 2 pipes in the rats nest & tied one that slips off, a collapsed pipe on the top of the air bypass/recirc valve under the upper intake pipe (i also have a big hks super dump valve - should i not have both) which was definately causing a problem, lower intake pipe, rewired part of tmy greddy E-01, changed the main engine fuse from 100amp to a 120 as it should be (tomorrow i plan to replace all fuses for the sake of it), sanded & vaselined boot earth all engine earts off the battery - ecu earth + 4 others behind dash, replaced Y-Pipe Coupler, load tested the battery & fully charged it (fine), fixed the boot catch! :) :) :)

car is now much smoother but some problems remian - overfuelling (i think so because it smells soooo much & mpg is soo bad), havent had a good WOT yet as i want to sand a few more earths beforehand but will post up tomorrow, idle still drops when clutch is down & in gear, lights still dim when i brake & the stereo still buzzes.

making progress a bit slow but cheap & rewarding!

right...sorry for the long post & the delay in getting back, thank you all for your advice - :Thumbs-up   enjoy being on here! :Talking1
