Title: Downpipe noise?
Post by: RedRummy on November 17, 2006, 10:28:38 PM
Hi,

Maybe i\'m just being paranoid about my car but...

Recently I\'ve noticed quite a loud (ish) noise coming from the area highlighted in the picture below (sorry for crappy picture.. I grabbed it off another thread and put my own label on it..

The noise sounds a bit like an exhaust and sounds a little like a leak or something with the downpipe.... or maybe a hose has become disconnected...

Is there anything in this area that is known to \'pop off\' or ... idunno..

when the bonnet is down, I can still hear some kind of exhaust like noise (louder than normal engine noise)...

Have you taken off the air pump????????????????

not personally no, but the car is pretty new to me...

no idea if its on or not... but that might also explain my occasionally lumpy idle i spose  ;)

assuming it *IS* off.

Take a picture of your engine bay and post it up so I can have a look. I am interested in the left hand side as you look at it stood looking into the engine bay.

The reason I asked if it was off is because if it has been removed and the engine blanking plates kit has not been put on then you will get the noise you are talking about.

aah!  OK, sure I\'ll take some pics tomorrow... thanks!

I\'m pretty sure it didn\'t used to make that  noise a week or so ago, but there are sooo many odd noises I don\'t know which to listen to first..

Its also got a FEED spec LSD so it klonks and knocks all other the place  :D

Well don\'t even think of getting rid of that. I have a 1 1/2 locking diff and they are fantastic, you just have to learn to use it.

When you take the pics, also take one of the area you have highlighted. Will pick this up tomorrow.

I\'m in brighton, and commute to Kent for work (not everyday in the RX, just every now and then ;)

yeah, that\'s just it... i just don\'t get it... how do i \'use it\'?   it just makes noise, thats all   :Giggle :Giggle

I\'ve never taken her on a track, so....

Actually, I just realised I\'ve got a couple of pics from when I bought it...

They\'re not ideal, and I\'ll get some better ones tomorrow of the actual spot, but it might help   :)

cheers

Its a bit hard to tell it can be so many things.

I know Exhaust manifold gaskets are renound for leaking and making an Exhaust blowing type noise from the Turbo area??

There is also a Moo\'ing kind of noise that the Air pump makes that can sound quite odd??

Could be your BOV becouse you have quite short Inlet Pipes you may be able to hear it more than most??

Has it sudenly just come on or has it always done it?

Think it has only just started, but its hard to say as I\'m still getting used to its noises...

That sounds like a good description of the noise... :(

That would explain quite a bit, but unfortunatly its not a Plesent job to do with the engine in.

You could do with putting it on a Ramp and listen to the Turbo area from under the car, It could be one of three Gaskets (engine to Manifold,Manifold to Turbo or Turbo To down pipe) but if it has gone at the Engine to manifold/Manifold to Turbo this may be why the idle undulates? (engine needs a Bit of Back pressure to regulate a constant Idle, its how its set up)

Well looking at your pics the airpump is still there it looks as if it\'s pluged in and it still has it\'s belt. So on just viewing the pics, I would say Grizz is on the right lines ref a gasket.
Ref using the diff---I will post up later in here as just off to work, it\'s a different driving style.

Erk!

Coming round to the idea its an exhaust manifold gasket....  Is that something I could attempt to fix, or is it a \'trip to experts\' job...

how much am I looking at?

Do you have a Rapm you could use? first you need to get it up in the air and decide which Gasket is leaking, Then i would sugest getting a qoute to have it done before attempting to do the job yourself (it may not be too expencive to get fixed and its not to plesent a job your self)

Still at work but have found some spare time----------

Ref the Diff mate, it\'s all about you trusting it to lock up at the right time you are directly in control of that in some cases when you hit the gas pedal e.g. launch at the lights, dropping it down to 3rd at say 40-50mph and booting it. The diff will lock and both wheels give you the traction or they both spin at the same time until they get traction.
Roundabouts, as you enter just squeeze the gas a little bit more than normal and she will flow through it, she may lock up in a hopping motion but thats normal, the back end will not go away.
Right handling at speed, corners, I did some practice in an old industrial area where there was lots of space, bit like drifting but you are trying to get use to where she brakes away. In a Rex with the std lsd it is at point a) with the locker it is at a higher speed point b). You just need to try it, push the envelope of taking a left/right hand bend faster and faster until it goes. That will give you the confidence to trust the back end as you then have a good idea how hard you can push it.
Prime example, i was at Donnington the other weekend with the lads and STICKERS on here hopped in for a passenger ride, after Dunlop straight you take a sh*tcane an then it\'s the pit lane straight, well as we came out of the sh/cane I gave it full boost just as I got her straight and level, the diff locked up and we took off like a rocket. Stickers could not believe that I had just given it full boost and we were not in a 360 spin. He said if that had of been in his FD he would have spun out every time. We continued doing laps and every time I did the same the back end did not twitch, we were not hanging around either as just before braking for the sh/cane we were hitting 135-140mph and carrying speed through the sh/cane.
You need to have fun with it and then come out and join us on a track day and have a safe play. HTH.

cool, that sounds really good, didn\'t know I had so much control over it.

I\'m deffo gonna come along to a track day sometime, but I\'m just settling in with the car, knowing what its like and making sure everything is sound - I\'m still finding new things that have been modded LOL

cheers   :cheers

Just need to get the exhaust manifold looked at first too...  :Grrr :Grrr

sounds like it could be block to LIM gasket, this will cause an exhaust leak noise in/around turbo\'s and cause a lumpy/hunting idle.

Hunting idle is due to excessive air being drawn into combustion chamber through damaged gasket and exhaust leak could be coming from air pump port on block just below primary ports. This is quite a common problem and changing the LIM gasket with engine in is a bit of a job.Do you know if that gasket has been changed before, has engine had rebuild(could of been changed then)?? Reason i ask is old paper type gaskets are very common for leaking but new type of plastic/steel ones are not

That sopunds like the culprit... It has had a rebuild (by FEED, in Japan, in 2005, for previous owner)... no idea what was changed though.

Hmm, sounds like a PITA to get sorted... at least its not uncommon..

Will I be doing any harm to anything by driving it?   :xconfused

I don\'t have any ramps or even axle stands (gonna get some stands at some point), and well, as for my toolbox... I\'m sure I\'ve got a screwdriver in the kitchen drawer somewhere... LOL

So, I guess it would be a visit to Re:Worx
