Title: Lumpy idle...
Post by: RedRummy on November 16, 2006, 09:42:15 PM
Hi,

The idling on my FD is.. well... is goes up and down... it undulates... it seems to go from 1K to 2K revs and back down again, over and over again... maybe just when its cold, as I\'ve only just noticed it.

It doesn\'t sound very strong when it idles, as if its struggling to stay running...

any ideas?

:xconfused :xconfused

It\'s called hunting - it\'s usually because there\'s an air leak, which on an FD is bad. Need to get that sorted.

have you got an apexi ecu on it mate???

this sounds like a common problem that happens if it hasn\'t self learned properly after installation.

yeah, its got an Apexi ECU... version 1.0 so i\'m told by Pip @WGT... (they are now at version 6 i believe)

actually seems to idle fine when first turned on... but can \'hunt\' when warm.

the ECU has been installed for years as far as I know...

it should do it only when the aircon/heaters are switched on when warm.
this is quite a common problem on ecus that have been fitted without letting them self learn to stablise voltages ect ect. pip or someone with the dataloggit software should be able to sort this very easily.

if it was an airleak (i.e a vac hose off/split) the revs wouldn\'t rise and fall rapidly, the car would simply rev higher than normal.

hth

no, that\'s not true at all. Air leaks commonly cause hunting at idle in the revs.

Its a bit of both, it depends on where the air leak is.

seems to idle just fine when turned on and warming up... seems the hunting is only occasional...

I dunno, I scare myself everytime i turn the key, thinking I hear strange noises... thinking its about to splutter and die.

should just get in and enjoy it LOL

If you wantr my advice, Get it Compression tested, if it comes back good it will give you confidence to drive it. (plus if you take it to a Proper Rx7 Guy you can pick his brains about other faults :yes to set your Mind at rest)

It was compression tested and mapped by Pip a few weeks ago... when I first bought it.

Compression figures:
7.7, 7.8, 7.7 front
7.9, 8.0, 7.9 rear

so...   :Thumbs-up   It\'s set to 0.95bar boost and a few good mods to help with cooling... (large rad, FMIC, thermostat kicks in earlier than normal etc etc)

Apparently, Pip had nothing but good things to say about it... was popping some nice flames on the Dyno too...   :Viking

Just seems a bit.... rough... but maybe thats what you get with a quick road car...

And custom injectors... but I don\'t know why they\'re custom... Pip had never seen them before...
