Title: mot emissions test on freshly rebuilt engine
Post by: Juz on November 16, 2006, 08:59:56 PM
my fd is due to go in for mot test but it has only done 150 miles so far of running in since an engine rebuild... i understand that even normally with decat there\'s a chance it might fail emissions - but will the engine not being completely run in also have any sort of effect on the emissions? be it higher or lower?

Hi,

I dont know if this is the same for all imports but my first FTO went in for a MOT and the examiner told me that cause it was an import they have not got any compariable data so even if it was 100 time worse than a english faliure they could not fail it. Like i said this was about 3 years ago dont know if it has changed since but my ReX has gone in after being sat up for 18 months without running and passed emisions test.

Make sure they don\'t over rev the engine in there! You\'re still running it in :)

Otherwise not suire sorry.

if its pre 1995 then they should only test it at idle. :)

if you are and a base map/running in map has been loaded onto it then you will prob find that that is quite rich.  this will normally be done for safety while you are running in.  as pip (WGT) says "petrol is cheaper than engines".*

yup, it\'s pre-95, so i only anticipate an idle test. but am running stock ecu, no pfc so was just wondering even on standard mapping whether the fact it\'s all fresh might have an effect on emissions levels. ah well, can\'t do anything but try it and find out! if it fails no idea what i\'ll do though :)

I would have thought that if it\'s stock you will still have the cat and therfore the airpump so should pass.  People pass the test with no cat at all so finger\'s crossed! :)

just thought i would report back with the results of my phonecalls today...

i tried my normal garage from my piston days... he says his mot place puts the chassis number of the car into their computer and it tells them what the emissions can be, then they have to run the emissions test and put the result into the system and it says whether it\'s a pass or fail (in the old days they just had a chart on the wall, then could decide themselves if it had passed! which would have been better lol) he gave them my chassis number and their computer said 0.5% limit!!!! lol no chance. doubt it\'s even worth sticking it in for a punt.

so i\'ve decided to book back in at w.g.t. who did my engine rebuild. it\'s a long drive for an mot, but they will be familiar with the engine and decat as they did it only a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully it should pass at the mot station they use (i assume they\'ll be familiar with rotories and the emissions allowed) and if it doesn\'t, i guess it\'s in the hands of people who will know what to do with with it to make it so it does pass!

if only i had realised a couple of weeks ago that this was due would have saved me a lot of hassle lmao! :Thumbsup!

the chassis no will only appear if a uk car the pre 95 jap import only requires the idle test of 3.5 co not the full test which is 0.5 that figure is for post 92 uk cars

Yep and just for the record, technicially you can get a pre July 1995 car on the 3.5%CO and 1200HC limit.

My ReX went through a MOT today and the max limit was 3.5%co and 1200hc
it passed with readings of 0.25%CO and 202ppm HC
IDLE speed & Smoke level no readings taken
THis is on a 1994 car.
