Title: Not using your rx7 much...
Post by: Cally on November 16, 2006, 02:29:11 PM
Ok, due to the fact I can walk to work and it seems to be constantly raining here in scotland at the moment I am not using my rx7 much. So my question is all the peole who have them as second cars, do you go out and start them up every couple of days or do you just leave them till you have to use it?
I have just been taking mine for a wee blast 20-30 mins  about once a week but wann make sure I am keeping it sweet.:D

I walk to work too so dont use the car on daily basis but i do try to drive or go for a quick blast(weather permiting) every otherday and drive every weekend.  Its better to go for a drive rather then leeting it idle and switch off.

Taking it out for 20-30 min, once a week seems ok.:Thumbsup! If you have PFC just make sure that everything is in correct order or working ok i.e water temps, battery volts, boost, vac etc...

Mine sits quite happily in the drive for 2 weeks & sometimes 3 - 4 :( without starting it and it has always starts on the button & drives perfectly....... It\'s Jap, what more can I say!!!! thing is though 9 times out of 10 when it gets taken out it goes on a 200 mile trip to the Wirrel then back for another 200 mile to get home;)

Mine usually sits around all week till I drive it at the weekend :) But at the moment it won\'t get driven further than from the drive to the garage at the end of the drive until next year.

Mine regularily sits for weeks nice and snug in the garage.  I have it hooked up to a trickle charger, so no worries about battery drain.

Ok, I have an Fd on the drive thats been stood for the best part of a year (its a mates and is half Converted to single Turbo before he had a cash flow problem)

My question is should i pull the Plugs out and oil it up then Turn it over by hand every so often? or does it not realy matter?

I would hate for it too develope a Sticking Apex/Side seal and end up needing a rebuild??

Hi,

A question from a newbi.  There are quite a few of you how dont drive in the winter. Is this because the jap imports are not under sealed as they dont suffer from alot of water problems over there. If so wouldn\'t it be a good idea to get the underneath sprayed with a sealent so you can have all year round fun. Or is this a newbie adding 2 & 2 & getting 5.

Cheers Garith.

i dont use mine as it\'s simply no fun in the wet. spins the wheels too easily and also the fact that i odnt like getting mine dirty with all the salts on the roads

most people run a rex as a second car, not everyone (like me)  but they are happy to keep it out of the salt and aliminate the risk of stacking it.  a few get stacked fairly badly over the winter, just due to the roads and weather etc.

if possible i would like to use mine alot less but as it is my only car i dont have much choice.

They go round the lip of the rear arches (usaly start low down where the stones take the paint off),around the Seam in the sill (about 2/3\'s back there is a seam that rusts), Roof skin where the Sun roof seals against (if you have a Roof) and front edge of the roof (behind the Screen rubber).

Odd as it may seam i\'ve never had to weld up any Floor on an Fd its all been cosmetic.

Thing is both the cars that are/where badly rusting are Uk spec and when you strip them they have little to no Rust proofing, you will be suprised when you see how bad they go if you let them.

Hands up here, I would like to underseal my car but:
a) never done it before :o
b) I know that there\'s absolutely no way I\'d be allowed to on our new drive!!! :Nono!
c) I\'m a bit worried about putting it on on places where things get a bit warm :eek
As a result, does anyone please know: 1) if I can get hold of an idiot\'s guide somewhere on how to do it, or 2) tell me who might be able to do it in SE London, NW Kent area?
Thanks
Mark

Tbh, your best of taking it to your local body shop and ask them to wax oil it and black wax the back arches.

Make sure they know you want the back arches and sills done well. Alos leave it with them over night so it has a chance to dry.

This year I only did 100miles with my FD. It sat for 7 months last winter and started with no problem on fresh battery.

Welcome to the world of Un Rust protected FD\'s, This is a genuine UK Fd and there is more where this came from. This car has been stood for a year (hence the Disk) but its been covered during that time and the 1/4 and sills have got no worse... Scary is\'nt it, i know mu car is well Wax oiled ;)

BTW sorry about the poor pic, its dark and its got a Cover over it so it was a little difficult to get the pic right.

Do you have to prepare the car with anything when leaving it over the winter ??? oil change or drain oil .. does things seze up ?

Mine is a daily driver but was thinking of a small run around for the winter .

i thought the rotary lumps suffered with the tips sticking to the walls or marking the walls that causes wear? and they are ment to be run up quite often?

If I have a motor just sat up,....I normally just hand turn it once a week or so,give it some oil now and again.......have had a motor sat for a year like that, installed it,flushed out the oil,and it fired almost at once..:)

i drive my fd around 100 miles a week (2 long ish journeys and some shorter blasts) all year.  tbh i get annoyed when people say you shouldn\'t drive the car in the winter. yes the roads are wet and no we don\'t have traction control, but with some sensible driving and decent tyres, there is no reason why it should crash itself!  i have had a couple of dodgy moments when the back end has gone a bit mental but that was because i hit the second turbo coming off roundabouts.  all down to driver error!

respect the car and it will respect you...

Keep a bit of ATF in the housings, and rotate by hand every week or so. If you leave the engine standing with no movement, the apex seal springs can lose their tensile strength causing early rebuild time. This has happened to me whilst on deployment(6months), and the engine popped on the dyno just before RS2.
The ATF will soften the carbon build up, and clean the rotors/housings. Just make sure that when the engine is started, you are in a well ventilated \'street\' and you will need to replace the plugs. Do several full rpm runs, until there is no more smoke being produced.

Cheers,
John

Ok, as always the case i\'ve had a mess with the car tonight and thought i had some ATF but haven\'t, I\'ve put a Bit of 2 Stroke oil in (i thought its designed to burn anyway??) I just did\'nt want to try the motor over to much Dry.

There was a healthy amount of Compression so i feel abit better. I\'ll do it again next week but i\'ll get some ATF in the mean time. Which brings me to another question, I\'m only using about a tea spoon of oil per bath should i only do the oil bit once a Month or some thing like that becouse i\'m a little worried that after a few months i may fill the Engine full of oil :)

Also while i\'m thinking about it, I Watched the Video about decarboning seals (its posted in another thread) could i do a simalar thing to turn this motor over (Plug it into an Air line) thats if i sorted a means of oiling the Apex\'s etc as it turned?
