i have a t70 single tubby, is it normal for the hot side to be glowing red hot, when i stop.
i popped the bonnet and it was glowing away. i havent been REALLY booting it, i was a little but not all the time. i was only driving for about 20 mins. (and it had been not run for about one and a half hours previous to that. eg it will have cooled down majoritly by the time i got back in it)
like i said is this ok, are the bolts that go into the hot side supposed to be a white ish colour?
Its possable if you have been giving it some stick, worrie if it does it all the time of load as well as on. ;)
You may want you put a Turbo Blanket and Heat rap round it, may be causing a Visous Circle.
Has it all been set up now??
yes, except on the way back my exhaust (rear section) where the pipe is welded onto the back box if you get me, has started blowing where there must be a hole, can feel it blowing if you put your hand around it.
insidently this cat back is the only part of the exhaust system which i havent changed in the last 2 months, dont know how old it is as it was on the car when i bought it.

in what way? make it hotter.
when i popped the bonnet i didnt expect to see this big red glowing thing
Well we are getting closer to Xmas you know.........wasn\'t a Reindeer was it. :flamed
LOL, all Turbo\'s glow if you abuse them, the Twins do it but its so cluttered you can\'t see.
If its just been set up ring them up and ask about it? It could be that its Running Weak but as i say its more likly its just been abused.

Basicly becouse the Turbo is right next to the Lower Inlet manifold, Turbo gets hot and warms the Inlet charge up causing the engine/Turbo to get Hotter etc.
Thats why its a good idea to rap the Turbo up so the heat stays away from things that should be kept cool like Inlets,Pipes and wires.
but then surely the tubby stays hotter
The Hot side stays the same temp, Think about it all you are doing is keeping the Hot bit Hot and that heat away from things that should stay cool.
Its better that the Hot side of the Turbo/Exhaust gets hot rather than the Inlet on the engine side of the Intercooler.
so are these bolts suppose to be white (from heat i think)?, i am assuming so?

my exhaust is blowing from here, my perfectly to scale acurate drawing. grrrrr, do you recon it could be repairable

Urm i\'m not seeing your Drawing at the mo (but i\'m downloading so it may be me)
Thinking about it if its a New turbo the Bolts may have some sort of Anti corrosion coating (like zinc) that makes them white when you heat them up?? (just a guess).
Are you using a V-band Clamp on the Exhaust?
my only worry about all this is something sounds funny when i was driving this evening, it is when ,my foot is on the throttle (not floored just accelerating) thought there is like a tapping (prob being paranoid), but there is a blowing sound that sounds like it is coming from up front not back, but the back was never blowing before, i think it is just that and i am being very paraniod.
will see if i can get someone to look at the back section tomorrow, see if there is any chance of repairing it.
That "tapping" noise you describe is exhaust blow for sure. Just a case of finding where.
If the gasket has gone on the manifold/turbo, that would make the noise and blow hot air around the tub which might make it hotter ??
will have to check tomorrow, seems odd that the gasket would have gone as it is all brand new and fitted 3000 miles ago
Could be comming from anywhere. May even have developed a crack in a minfold or something. But I would be v confident that is an exhaust blow..
turbo shd only be glowing red if u have given it some real hard runs not from just a couple of quick bursts

depends on ignition timing and fueling which would also cause hotside to glow. You might be running a bit rich, a bit lean or a bit too retarded.
If i was you i\'d get it checked over, it may be nothing but it could also be Mixture,Timing etc so better to be safe than sorry.
can anyone explain (with pics?) how a downpipe attaches to the turbo, a V clamp or something?
Basicly you have two flanges that in most cases are welded onto the end of the Down pipe and the hot side of the Turbo, when they are pushed together they form a V, then you put a Clamp round that that has the the same V shape pressed into it and when you tighten it up the clamp draws the two sides of the Flange together.
The Down side to this is its very easy to warp the Flanges when you weld them on, so you need to buy realy good quality V-bands.
legend, cheers
Is there any chance any portion of your exhaust would be clogged ? That could be one of the causes. Check for any exhaust restriction
I was chatting to a guy today and it was pointed out if an exhaust is leaking or has a hole in it then it will act like an Obstruction to a point (bad flow) if you can imagen, you have two peices of pipe you drill a 10mm hole in one and then test them with pressure going through then like an exhaust the pipe without the hole will flow more.
Can\'t say how much more but it will flow more but the unclean flow will make a diffrence.
i have exsactly the same prob mate even down to the blowing exhaust i got mine booked in with hyeline in cardiff for a check on the settings i would recommend heat wrap works a treat
what t70 did you get?..hope it wasn;t a ebay special... I Would get you car checked out. you booting it should cause a decent t70 to do that. as it should flow without too much trouble.
Its funny there is so many diffrent types of T70 about you realy don\'t know what your going to get.
I had a T72 on a Half Bridge ages ago and that was realy laggy and was not nice at all so i droped down to a T66 which was better, anyway a mate bought a T70 and put it on his Extended Port FD and suprisingly it went well?? so i guess there is more than one with the name T70.

Trouble is its got to the point now, there doing copies of the copies. Wonder how many turbo\'s there are now out there based loosley on the garrett gt series?

I have to sadly agree with this, you get a good product and its riped of so much with cheap C**p it gives it a bad name.
Please Pm me who did your mapping, and I will advise as applicable.
Cheers,
John
my turbo is a turbo technics, bought and fitted by pip. knowing pip and his work i would think that he knows the guy he buys all his turbos off and therefore trusts him. i cant see pip messing up his reputation by selling cr4p turbos.
I\'m sure you got one of the good ones but if you look at E-bay there is alot of cheap copys out there. There is so many variations of the original.
I think you should be going back to pip and picking his brains...i\'m sure there is a logical reason for your issues.
pip is organising for my car to be picked up as he is 150+miles away and it would not benifit my car from that drive.
i have gone to a exhaust place and had it up on the ramps but we couldnt see anything, so this way pip can sort it out him self and make sure it is right.
top man is pip!!!
agreed!!!!!
