Title: New 2 Rotor Life
Post by: n4bes on November 15, 2006, 08:12:22 PM
Hi All,

I am new 2 the world of the Rx 7, having just purchased a 1994 Type R (:D ) I look forward 2 a long happy relationship (the other half is going green with envy). The car is just getting prepared for uplift and should be on my drive in 2-3 wks.

I have been very impresed with the wealth of knowledge you all have and I am looking for advice. I am pretty usless so jack and jill language would help lol.

I have a war chest of £1500 2 spend and fancy an Apexi Fc.

Would this be an good idea as the car has an unknow history, Twin Apexi induction kits and a Magic R exhaust (not sure if cat back etc) ?

I live in Scotland and I may need 2 travel for this, Is WGT the closest 2 me ?

Any better suggestions for spending the cash apart from the obvious like drink, parties and good nite oot ?

Cheers all

Neill

Hi and welcome to the MRC Forum.

TBH the very first thing you want to be doing is get it Compression tested and Make a list of all the Goodies you have fitted, then Talk to a Repituble Tuner (WGT is a good example).

I personaly would say

1.Comp test (if all is good)
2.Good Service (all oil,Plugs etc Changed)
3.PFC and Roller set up (this must be done by a rotary Tuner as there set up difrently)
4.new set of Tyres (For some reason Jap tyres are Crap in the UK, dangrous)

If you do a search you will find alot of the Questions to do with owning a Rotary have already been addressed but if you have any Questions feel free to ask away :yes

Thank you.....

The car is getting a compression test and a service prior 2 me getting it. I am getting it from lspp (Yorkshire) any comments. What should I look for in the compression report. I was gonna get Pip to do a full service for me.............gear oil etc.

I have 17" wheels on it with 235/40/17 f and 255/40/17 r ( I think). What tyres would you recommend and where would I get them ?

Cheers

Yes make sure the Comp test is done properly.

If WGT does it for you they usaly give you a print out and it should look like this.

Front 7-7.1-7.2 Rear 6.8-6.7-7

What you are looking for on a Comp test is Even Figures (eg. 8.0-5.0-5.1 would mean ether a stuck Apex seal or damage) if you have one figure lower than the others (8.0-8.0-5.0) this would mean you have a Bad Side seal, If the Front rotor readings are alot diffrent to the Rear thats wear (the back will always wear quicker becouse of the extra heat)

Most important, 5-6bar is drivable but you will be looking to rebuild soon, 6-7bar is a Good Motor (possably origanal or a rebuild with some miles on) 7-8 bar is where most people like to be (Very good motor 80% chance of a Rebuild) anything over that has very Recently been rebuild and is a Good motor. Anything lower than 4 and you will be getting into starting and flooding  problems.

Before its tested it may be a Good idea to drive it get it hot and give it a bit (don\'t go mad if its not Mapped for our fuel) this will help clear any carbon out that may give a faulse reading.

Yes they are a common size for an FD (235/45/17 & 255/40/17), I would personaly recomend Toyo T1-R tyres. I get mine from here //www.mytyres.co.uk but its a mail order place so you need to get them fitted (but good price)

Just check your front tyres don\'t catch your Arches, if there are any signs get 225/45/17

With the same boost not alot more power but will be noticably Smoother to drive, but if you tweek the boost a little you\'ll be happy with it :)

Its another of those ask the Tuner questions becouse he can only set it up to the Condition of the motor/Fuel system you have fitted, one car may make 280rwhp but another may only make 240rwhp, depends on alot of things.

Good luck.

Yep....Check out what Cat back you have fitted, if its a Big bore (3") you could remove the Air pump(you only need this when you run a cat),Fit a 3" Down pipe and Mid pipe (You may want a Silenced one Fd\'s are renound for being loud with a Unsilenced Decat fitted) that will help your Power.

But if you go 3" don\'t run it until you get the PFC (they tend to Spike and Boost creep if not set up correctly)

Keep an eye on the for sale section in here.  I will be selling a midpie myself next week, and others have downpipes and midpipes for sale.

The front rotor gets hotter.

Keep some cash aside for any suspension work it may need, when Pip or whoever has your new car up in the air, it\'s highly likely that they will find worn or damaged suspension components. It doesn\'t matter how good it looks or how low milage it is, the car has probably been thrashed to within an inch of it\'s life on the docks in Japan. There is no use having a tuned engine if everytime you go in to a corner the car behaves differently.

Hope you enjoy your new toy!

How do you figure? 70% of engines Fail at the rear rotor? and the reason i was given was the rear rotor\'s inlet temp is always hotter than the front? Don\'t know if this is Correct but there is an Ovious problem, every motor i\'ve rebuilt/Seen blown has gone at the rear?
