Title: V-Mounts?
Post by: Grizzly on November 14, 2006, 09:01:28 PM
Ok so time has come when i have Cash burning a Hole for a V-mount.

So what options are there?? I know there\'s Ross\'s Kit for £950+vat which sounds  good and if i go up to the Next level there\'s the Knightsport Kit for around the 2K mark, then i was told there is a HKS V-mount that comes without a Rad for about 1k?.

So my Question is........ Whats the best value/Quality/Efficancy kit out there for an FD?

Is there any others to add to the List too look into?

Cheers
Chris

I think the Knight-Sports one is the original V-mount

Personally though I went for a Front mount. I got an Apexi GT Intercooler second hand (which is the Daddy of all intercoolers) and a Koyo N-flo radiator from the states cos it was cheap (about £350 delivered) and at the moment I\'m seeing average Water temps of about 80 deg C and Air temps of about 20 Deg C, so masses of potential for power.

i have the WGT kit and i think it looks well good as it proper fill the engine bay. and the intake temp are so low, i couldnt be happier.  it is about a grand with the rad, and in my opinion the set up (V between the intercooler, the rad) with the plates at the side forcing all the air through one or the other, i have pics if you want.

Pics would be good mate, dont think ive seen the WGT one.

Dont suppose you know what the pressure drop is (open ended question about all kits, so anyone in the know feel free to answer :) )

Wow, like the look of that, grand with the rad, not a bad price at all.

Someone needs to make a Greddy elbow angled the other way, or straight, could get rid of the kink in the betwen IC and elbow. Suppose a fab shop could make something up, although cost vs benefit might not be so great!

R-Majic kit on this page - UK based too (http://www.yocustomize.co.uk/html/mazda_rx-7_fd3s_05.html)

Looks a decent price.  Haven\'t bought from them before though, would be worth calling and asking..

D1WTF, That looks sweet. Did you do the Single turbo at the same time? That looks a Big Intercooler did you notice any lack of Turbo Respesponce?
Title: V-Mounts?

when my engine went i did everything single, v mount etc, it was a grand (i am 99% sure) with the rad, i am well happy with it.  intake temps are well low, i didnt have a comander before so i cant tell you what mine was as standard but now, when it was still summer (sunny and warm and not getting dark at 5pm) the temp was normally 27 deg c or less, and before the clutch line burst on friday (now that it is cooler) it is normally sub 18 deg c.

once i had comited to going single, eg paid for it half of the work i started to wonder whether i had made a mistake as i loved the way the twins were (instand power).  i am running a turbotechnics T70, so not by any means huge but medium.  i was worried it would be pretty laggy, but i am so happy, i  really dont think it is very laggy at all, and the power delivery is so much smoother than twins.  i cant wait to see what it will do up the strip (touching into 11\'s i am hoping, maybe optimistic but we will see).  Granted it might need slightly higher revs to launch but i really think this will spank any twin turbo from a standing start, plus i have been driving around with a 6500rpm rev limit as when i got it mapped after 1000miles (running in), pip said the engine felt too tight still so he didnt want to take it passed 6500rpm.  when i pick her up tomorrow she will be derestricted yippee
if anyone is considering going single and is not sure, i am more than happy to take anyone out for a spin and i will be very suprised if it didnt convince you.  (just get intouch, if you are going to travel to me the least i could do is take you for a spin, lol)

the only thing i think that is harder to do is to those little powerslides out of t-junctions etc, that are so easy with twins as when the second turbo kicks it is enought to put the arse out.  obviously you can still do it but you need to mean to do it where as twins sort of do it for you.   (but again i havent had mine running full revs yet so ask me again tomorrow evening and this might be a different story)

I hope I can still do them when my car is ready (end of next week getting itchy feet big time :2Rolleyes :2Rolleyes :2Rolleyes

As you say was easy with the twins.

it is still easily do able but you have to mean to if you know what i mean not just accidental.  put your foot down and it will happily break traction.
really i am amazed at how it launches, i really thought it would be laggy but i am so glad i went single.  (when i first got a rex i always always said i would never go single because it will be laggy etc (my house mate has an s13, and when he boots it nothing happens for about 4 second +)  but single turbo\'d rexs being laggy is really a misconception (obviously with a huge drag turbo, or a turbo with a big AR ratio then they are going to be).

strange_days_uk - i am feeling for you i was rexless for nearly 3 months and the last few weeks as the finishing date kept moving due to bits not turning up etc, i was ripping my hear out.  when i went to collect it, i got back in it and remembered instantly how comfy a driving possition they are etc.  it is worth the wait i promise.

Now you are just teasing me...

I have a new seat to go in as well so looking forward to a very different feeling car.

Next thing though will be suspension and breaks, it never ends man....

spelt wrong buy the way, quite how i know that as i am dyslexic but anyway.
BRAKES - i thought the standard rex breaks were good, but now i have gone single, boy i am wrong.  it is scary,  over night (well since going single) they just seem perthetic.  i guess it is just cause you can be going so much quicker in a shorter stretch of road or something

I run a great V Mount on my car....you can buy it direct from Radtech.  It coped happily with 2 hours worth of racing and testing at Pembrey so Id say that is a good enough rubber stamp to say its good!

Plus as it is made to order....you can get the measurements just right!!!

Cost will be about £800 all in :)

Also it is pointless buying a stupidly huge radiator that doesn\'t have any ducting and channelling.  Also the air needs to be able to exit as well as enter.

Money is better spent getting the ducting right so that the air is forced through the radiator (max speed is about 50mph though) and correctly venting to avoid low pressure zones which will cause the air to stall

So you need to slow that air down going in, then speed it up coming out

Big isn\'t always the best....I mean who would you go for Kylie or Opera Singer?

Just in the middle of some changes to my car including V-Mount from Dragon (made by Radtech). Design is for twins so having to hack I/C pipes a bit to suit single setup. I have also welded bracket to bottom of rad to fit a plate between front bumper intake to rad.

i am 99% sure the WGT kit is radtech as well.  well that is what all the hoses that came with the kit are stamped with.  like above mine has the ali side plates, but they do not sit on the rad as above.  as with the WGT kit the IC is the same width as the rad so they sit at the sides. (if that makes sences)

Yeah, the WGT kit is radtecs too. I think radtec are not allowed to sell through themselves anymore though. I think they now have a deal with Dragon - I was the last person (as far as i know) to buy direct from radtec.

There are so many V-Mount kits it\'s unreal.  From looking at the parts section of RX-7 Vol 91 (Japanese), there are quite a few available: -
RE Amemiya (huge intercooler!)
R Magic
Odula
Knight Sports
FAMC
HKS

Now, reading RX-7 magazine #30 (Japanese again), there is a great feature on turbos that show off quite a few setups.

The 2 best in my opinion (looking for early torque not out and out power) are the RE Amemiya V-Mount with TD06-25G (410ps/6400rpm, 49kgm/5300rpm) and the FEED front mount with TO4S (430ps/6530rpm, 51kgm/5450rpm).  As you can see from the figures, there is no clear direction as to front or v-mount being better than the other :(  It may just come down to personal preference.

They have a page description of the HKS V-Mount, it allows keeping the battery and has room for the air pump - doesn\'t look like the kit comes with a radiator though.

The Knight Sports V-Mount with their SS480  produced 416ps/7500rpm, 40.8kgm/6200rpm.

So much choice!

I can get my Mate Seto to sort you one out from Japan and post it over every time with mine :Thumbs-up

The car is in quite alot of them, Ben sent me a few pictures of it the other day that he found in Hyper Revs and RX-7.

Yep, there is an "International Order" button near the bottom of the left colum, basically ends up with a form you print and fax over.
I like Kieron\'s idea of subscribing through JapCentre, will investigate.

I\'m still not sold on V-Mounts for a street car.  What is the heat soak like when sitting in traffic?  But does it really matter if the IC is getting warmed by the radiator when you are off boost?  Does the deflector help prevent that anyway?  In the HKS diagram install there is another radiator looking device in the setup?  Is this the AC rad or something?

There are plenty to choose from and lots of installs in this country now, I\'ve never heard anyone say they wished they\'d have gone/stayed front mount after going v-mount.

Very nice looking set-up :) What was the damage?

Dragon/Ross, do you have any idea what the pressure drop is on your v-mount kit? Im looking for a good set-up for the twins, looking to take them as high as poss so pressure drop is a factor I need to consider.

I was looking at one of the ASP/M2 SMIC intercoolers, very good cooling and pressure drop of around 1.1 psi, well the way the large one is mounted its getting towards a v-mount set up. Im very keen on the UK V-mount kits though, and will also work out cheaper :)

I definately think the Greddy elbow needs chopping though, and fuse box moving a bit if needed, would eliminate an un-necessary bend, which would help with the pressure (every little helps!) and look neat too.
