Title: I just aquired a 1994 RX-7 TYPE R Now the fun begins
Post by: GaseJo on November 11, 2006, 02:51:54 PM
Hello my name is Garith and i have just brought my first RX-7 i have had FTO\'s & a Skyline but this is a first. I have been reading through the posts about them and i am not really worried about the smokey engine i have, It just seems from all the things i have read that it is just running rich hence the black petrol smelling smoke i get on cold tickover. The reason i am posting this thread is i got this car to BASICALLY IN A NUT SHELL TO PIMP!!!

I want to MOD the body & Paint work (Any ideas from people on colour) I am thinking of Tango Flip Orange Over Silver Base Coat with Black Bonnet Door Mirrors Wing Vents Wheels And After Market Spoiler.

Wheels I would like to go to 19" from the standard 16" i have tein suspension fitted so i dont know if this will be a problem.

The Engine bay Well everything in here is either going to be mirror finish metal POLISHED OR STAINLESS and Blue SAMCO pipe joiners hose and wire covers. But i am no machanic so power mods are out of my league so any ideas.

I WILL BE POSTING PICTURES EVERY NOW AND AGAIN IF I CAN WORK OUT HOW TO.

Thank you for reading any input will be very much appreciated and taken on board as the work is only just begining and you may well have your ideas transfered onto my car.

Cheers Garith.

congrats on the best sports car ever made :) iv also had a fto and a skyline, nothing iv drove compares to an rx7..
These plenty of body mods for these babys, me i love the ad-9 bonnet, its spoton lovely lol.. if the offsets right then 19" a fit no probs, maybe a slight arch role just to be safe and as for the teins, if there fully adjustable you`ll be fine for lowering/lifting the car a bit..
The engines a whole new ball came bud, dos your car need a rebuild? is so a street port, full stainless exhaust with a decat, twin filters, power commander and remap you will see a big difference :D

The guys here will certainly help ya out on any probs..

Hi INTERLOPER,

I dont think the engine needs a rebuild coz as is this car will wipe the floor with my RB25DET Skyline. There are twin APEXI filters fitted and an after market tail piece do not know about rest of exhaust as this car can only be about 4" off floor. Also dont know what teins i have as i only got a glimps when i chucked my head on the tar mac to see what state of tyres are in (they are balding on inner side (any ideas on why). Thanks for the tip on photobucket.com i shall do that now and add some pics.

Thanks again hope to chat again soon.

Cheers Garith.

Cud be the tracking thats out on the wheels, get them re-tracked with the lasers :D i here this is the most acurate way of having them done. The mods on yer car sound borderline before you need a apexi fc and commander/remap, if your cars not needing a rebuild id leave the power mods till later and mayber upgrade the engine for reliabilty as you`ll need this before uping the power anyways..

mods-
Front mount intercooler, v-mounts the best.
alloy radiator
alloy ast
apexi fc and commander
uprated vac pipes
oil catch tank

these would be my first buys :P

Hi again

Now you have lost me apexi fc and commander/remap like i said mechanicly i am stupid. These might have allready been done this car was imported in about 18 months ago since then it has been sat in someones garage i brought 2 weeks ago. Still not even registered just had to change tyres to get through mot that is asfar as i have got. I changed the clock faces to mph white dial with plasma light(supplied with car) and delimiter and mph chip now i have not got a speedo at all. I am a real novice so if you are willing to help i would appreciate it as i would like to get to know these things so i can keep this massive WOW smile on my face.

apexi fc and commander is a uprated ecu, the remap will make sure its all running correctly and setup right so it dosnt blow your engine to bits lol.. i.e remap increases the power :D

heres a link to what it is :P

Hi,

I will check the link out thanks. As for the pics they do it justice as there are big bits of lacquer coming off, a big dent at top front of nearside wing and a few rust spots. So there is a bit of prep work to be done. As for the wheels until i can afford a nice new set i will be polishing them to (as described in instructions) A high mirror finish. Yes now that is what i call a spoiler plenty of down force and somewhere i can do the ironing aswell LOL.

Cheers Garith.

Tyre wear might be due to the lowered suspension giving too much camber. Does it tramline under braking?

Hi Mave,

I think you might be right. I have been looking at something called pillowball as i understand they fit to top off front suspension and are adjustable so you can change camber. Do you know if these are any good or is there a better way to sort this problem out. Also i have no upper strut fitted which i believe are fitted as standard will this affect the car and handling in any way?

Cheers Garith.

the fact that you can blow away a skyline means nothing, my car was actually prob running its best/quickest just before the engine gave way.  i had a water seal failure (the rotary equivilent of a head gasket, in simple terms.  if this happens then it is rebuild time.)  the reason my car was prob running so well is because there was water leaking into the rotor housing therefore i was getting water injection for free, lol.
these are awsome cars but they really do need to be loked after, you have to be quite religious about checking levels as rotaries do burn oil as part of the combustion cycle.
the only real way you can tell how good/strong your engine is is by getting it compression tested (has to be done with a specific compression tester eg, not every garage can do this) so take it to one of the specialist and the top of the page.  but even a compression test is no garantee, it will indicate if your engine is on its way out.  however if you get good readings there is nothing to say that 50miles down the road it might throw a tip.

hope that helps, tried to keep it simple, any questions just ask

if the car is lowered, the majority of the time it will then need to have all the wheels re aligned as it will alter camber, toe in toe out etc, as mine is out a bit since i lowered mine (getting it sorted next week). and the same if you change the wheels.

oh and if it is just a back section to the exhaust which would assume it is, then with that an an air filter it should be fine on the stock ecu

Hi D1 WTF,

Thank you for the advice. Funnily enough as i was out a few hours ago i noticed a mazda specialist about 1.5 miles from where i live i dont know if they do rotary\'s coz they where closed but i will take a trip there next week and if they do i will take it in for a complete inspection. As for the lowering part i dont know if it is as i have no comparision i just know it is only about 4" from tar mac to under side of sill. Have you any knowlidge on the pillowball camber adjuster?

Cheers Garith.

do you mean upper strut brace?  front (in the engine bay)?  if so and you want one i have one for sale, it has black mounts and the main body is metal, that with a little polish could add some bling to your engine bay.  if you are interested i should be able to dig out some pics

most mazda garages will look at a rx7 and say that is a nice car, what is it.  however since the rx8 has come out they have got a bit better, so they could prob do a compression test however my advice would be to take it to one of the rotary specialsist such as Re:worx is fairly near you, prob your nearest.  i travel about 200miles to my garage, as i wouldnt let anyone else touch my engine.

as for pillar ball top mounts i am not really sure.  they are not really necessary for normal road use, they would prob be more beneficial for someone that uses there car on the track.

it is round a friends house at the moment, i might be able to pick it up tomorrow.  the standard rx7 ones only mount to two of the top strut(if thats what they are called) bolts so they are like a semi circle, which in my opinon doesnt look very nice.
this is an after market one with a complete ring.  i did a search on the forum just to check on what price strut braces are normally sold for and it came up with £35-40 (as per the price that i gave).
as i said hopefully i will be able to pick it up tomorrow so i will be able to take some more pics for you.

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick question when i put my foot on the clutch pedal when there is a sligth scraping sound could this be due to release bearing on its way out or that it has not really been driven for 18+ months and everything just needs a good run.

Cheers Garith.

Does it Work ok? Also is it a Standard Clutch? Not a twin plate or anything like that?

Could well be the Flywheels got wet and Corroded a bit, if it works ok i\'d say give it a Run if it gets worse then look into it, but if its been stood its always a Possablity it wants using.

Hi Grizzly,

Yes it works fine no slip or any other probs just the noise. I could not tell you anything about the clutch as i have just got the car and all i have managed to do with her so far is put my foot down and smile alot. Oh yes i dont know if this will help but the biting point on the clutch is instant its either on or off not alot of pedal movement needed from floor up.

Cheers Garith.

Well is you get five jack it up (don\'t forget Axle stands) then remove the Inspection plate of the bottom of the gear box, You will be able to see the Clutch (if its got a Painted presure plate or has two Friction Disks you\'ll proberly find its Uprated) but if its a single and the Pressure Plate looks like a Steel colour/Galvanized (SP) then its most likely Stock.

You just need to run it a Bit and see how it goies when you have a few miles on it.

Hi All,

I have now been a member since October the same time as i have had my ReX. Since joining i have managed to make a few friends and alot of people willing to go out of their way to help. It has been great also in that time i have been doing bits and pieces to my car. I have done all the Pre MOT work to turn this car into a UK legal car. I am pleased to say that on Friday 17 Nov My car passed the MOT so now all guns blazing to register her. Which in itself is a major struggle (STILL CANT FIND ENGINE NUMBER). I have also managed to buy a few pieces a Front upper strut brace of off D1 WTF (Thanks & look forward to receive it) I have just fitted a Issota Senso Steering wheel with Alluminium Boss Hks Type 1 Turbo Timer. THE EXTIORER, I have removed the remanants of the bumper and i am in the process of buying a TYPE R bumper to replace, I have removed the wing to remove dent. I have also started work for under the bonnet, I brought a spare Plenium and started polishing it(See Pic) nearly done. Next i will start polishing alternator. I think that is all for now sorry for boring you with all my news.

MORE TO FOLLOW.

Cheers Garith.
