Title: What variation it is
Post by: hugo on November 10, 2006, 09:41:22 AM
I am new to this RX7 world and I am about to biuy a 1996 gen 3 but I have no idea . How can I tell there seen to be so many or am I getting confused. I was also wondering what the differences between a 1993 and a 1996 Gen 3 model are. How can I tell what version of Gen 3 I am looking at ?

This might be a stupid question so please be patient.

Kind regards,

Hugo

Hi Hugo, welcome to the club!

firsly lets say there are no stupid questions when it comes to RX7s (well very few) and it is better to ask than risk buying a lemon!

secondly bot of the links above should give you a good idea on what the FD3S (3rd Gen is all about) there are 3 series of FD3S technically the FD ran from series IV to series VI

basically the RX7 series IV was built from 92 to 95
the series V from 96 to 98
the series VI from 99 to 2002

big difference between the 93 and 96 is the switch from an 8 bit to 16 bit ECU which resulted in a power increase. Also the rear lights are different, interior lights are green in a 96 orange in a 93, probably several other minor changes too.

Thanks for that Guys, so what you are saying is that if it is a 1996 then it’s a series V, Will it be a type R or whatever?
Thanks for the advise about the wet I also have a MR2 Revision 3 turbo (sorry I that is swearing on this forum ) that hops over hedges if let loose in the wet and I guess that rear wheel drive with engine up front will be just as hairy.

Kind regards,

Hugo

it could be a type R, R2, RB, Type X, bathurst etc etc that\'s where the other threads should help, but the actual version is a series 5. Means it should have a 16bit ECU and the later model rear lights (round lights in the "light panel" rather than rectangular ones)

Hi mate,

I\'ve got a 96 Type RS, over and above what has already been said you should get 17" wheels as standard and a flat 2 legged rear wing rather than the four legged one.  Carpet will be loop pile not shag (unfortunately not as good) You also get 10bhp extra (so 265bhp) and about 7-8lb/ft torque too (222lb/ft) if I remember rightly.  The suspension is a little harder also.

With regard to type, that depends on whether you have rear seats instead of bins, a rear wash wipe or not, the style of the seats and front fogs or not.

Post the spec and whether you have any of this stuff or not and we\'ll try and guess for you!!!

Hi,
The wheels are 17" however they are not the original ones son am not sure what was on there to start with.
There are two "fog" lamps up front and the spoiler is just as you have described.
The carpet seems to be of a loop type. Also the badge on the front of the bonnet is “triangular” in shape.

Kind regards,

Hugo

It definitely sonds like a 96 spec just by the spoiler (it\'s like an ironing board stuck on the back)

The triangular badge is the \'Efini\' badge, this is how the imported Rx-7\'s came at that time, similar to how Lexus is to Toyota.  Import MX-5 and Cosmos are \'Eunos\' rather than Mazda.

Do you have a rear wash wipe? how about the silly rear seats? this will help with the type that it is.

Apparently my RS has a lower final drive ratio for faster getaways, which is nice :)

Yes it has two "seats" in the back, but I dont think that even children would fit. The spoiler is flat so it sounds like a 1996.
Thanks for all the help.
