Title: checking on rebuild tips
Post by: anthony on November 09, 2006, 08:16:22 PM
i bought my rx off a friend who bought it off a guy who worked for mazda for the last 10 years.

he said he rebuilt the engine and had the receipt for the bits he bought.
It was from hurley engineering,  he bought the 2mm std + springs/basic kit and 12c/p plugs, costing £332ex vat.

I spoke to hurley and they said that kit is just all the gaskets, water jackets etc it doesnt include rotor housings etc.

Is that enough of a rebuild or would the rotor housings etc also needs to be replaced.
if so is there anyway i can tell that this has been done without taking the engine apart?

anyway know normally how much will it cost for a compression test ?

cheers

ant

Wouldnt it depend on the wear on the rotor housings?

Not sure if you can check that.  As has been said - compression checks will reveal a lot!

Compression test will tell you quite abit about the engine.. But doesn\'t guarantee how long its going to last.

normally when I buy an RX7, I don\'t worry about what people tell me or how long ago it was rebuilt. I\'ve seen mazda reman loose coolant seals after only 1000 miles. If you get a car, its better to get an engine built by known builder.. Slapping rotary engine together takes 2-3 hours.. To spec and prep the engine could take 1-2 weeks.

yeah as said above, it will only give and indication as to the condition of whats in the engine...you cant really use it to predict engine life as such....

I took mine to Hayward Rotary in Berkshire...its prolly the nearest of the vendors above...rotecknix are a bit closer iirc and they can do it too...

I do compression tests with a Mazda compression tester.Did a Turbo II today,49,000 miles,FSH,had 7 bar all round.
Don\'t know what RX-heaven use, they said it was 4 bar down on the front rotor.

my car had a compression test done a month before i bought it, had all good even readings, 2 days after i bought a water seal went due to part of the water jacket breaking away on the intermediate housing, just unlucky i guess!!

well the engine had the water jacket and gaskets all redone when it was rebuilt and it runs really well, its stopped first time evertime hot or cold.

guess its just see what happens then really, should be fine but theres no real way to see what its like without stripping it down or waiting till it pops :)
